Annual Report of the Trustees of the New London Music Association 30[th] September 2022 Charity Reg. 1179200

Background

The New London Music Association (NLMA) was registered as a Charity in July 2018. It is a continuation of the New London Music Society (NLMS) which was formed in 1981 by the conductor Terence Lovett. The change of name was required to alter governance arrangements in becoming a Charitable Incorporated Organisation (CIO) and amending the Constitution.

Activities and Objectives

The object of NLMA, as stated in the constitution, is:

“To promote, improve, develop and maintain public education in, and appreciation of, the art and science of music in all its aspects, by such ways as The CIO shall from time to time determine, including the organisation of music schools.”

Trustees and Structure

  1. There were six Trustees of the Association in place in 2020-21: Philip Meaden (Foundation Trustee, Chair), Suzanne Meaden (Foundation Trustee, Treasurer), Lorraine Collins (Foundation Trustee), Tessa Crilly (Secretary – appointed 17[th] June 2020), Jacob Ashworth (appointed 17[th] June 2020), Euan McCandless (appointed 1[st] September 2020).

  2. To address the concerns about NLMS’s constitution expressed by the committee in previous years, the following process was decided:

  3. a. That a new organisation, called New London Music Association (NLMA), should be set up as a Charitable Incorporated Organisation (Foundation Model); this was done and the NLMA constitution was approved by the Charity Commission in June 2018.

  4. b. That at the NLMS Year End of September 30 2019, NLMS would be wound up and its assets transferred to NLMA. In practice, this process has taken longer than anticipated, exacerbated by the 2020/22 pandemic. Partial transfer of assets from NLMS to NLMA was complete by 30[th] September 2022.

  5. NLMS will continue to be the trading name of NLMA.

  6. The Society’s correspondent is Dr Teresa Crilly, Secretary of NLMA, appointed as a Trustee by the four Foundation Trustees on 17/06/2020.

Transitional Status of NLMS and Joint Meetings with NLMA

It should be noted that meetings with trustees of NLMS (Tessa Crilly, Euan McCandless and Jacob Ashworth) are held jointly with trustees of NLMA (Philip Meaden, Suzanne Meaden, Lorraine Collins, Tessa Crilly, Jacob Ashworth, Euan McCandless). The two charity names, as NLMS transitions to NLMA, represent one body and one set of activities. NLMS continues to be the trading name, as a historic brand and identity, for NLMA activities.

Finance

  1. In the year ending 30th September 2022 NLMA’s operational income of £91,297 exceeded expenditure of £43,849, giving an operational surplus of £47,448.

  2. Receipt of funds from NLMS of £15,599 raised receipts to £106,896.

  3. Reserves for NLMA stood at £63,047 as at 30[th] September 2022.

  4. The financial data below reflects the transition between charitable entities NLMS and NLMA. The consolidated picture across both entities is more balanced, showing a net operating surplus of £11,893 and reserves of £77,915.

Courses

In 2021 - 2022 NLMA offered two major events: (i) a string chamber music weekend; and (ii) a second offering in the longstanding and successful series of residential music summer schools.

(i) Chamber Music Weekend – Easter School

The chamber music weekend consisted of pre-formed groups only, coached by an established professional quartet. Due to the pandemic, the April 2021 course took place in October 2021. The Easter 2022 course took place as planned in 2022.

2

(ii) Music Summer School

The Summer School took place in August 2022 at Downe House School. The offer consisted of four courses: two orchestras, (the Symphony Orchestra for those of Grade 8 standard, and the Sinfonietta for those of Grades 5-7), the String Ensemble (for early stage players) and the Choir – “Choral Singing for Pleasure”. The course features specialist tutors who coach sectional rehearsals focused on concert repertoire for both orchestras and the choir.

It was the first residential summer school since 2019 (with 2020 and 2021 cancelled due to the Covid-19 pandemic) and successfully re-established the ethos of ‘Friendship in Music’, the charity’s motto.
