Chairman’s Report
As the Chairman of the club, it’s always a great pleasure to write this report about some of the finest athletes and volunteers in the country. Since the Covid-19 Pandemic we have been rebuilding the club back to what it was and we are still building the club back up now. It has been a long process, but finally, it feels like we are moving back in the right direction.
The club has started to thrive again, with athletes starting to complete in various tournaments all over the country. This has helped to keep athletes focused and ready for competition. The re-introduction of the Super League has also helped the athletes focus on high level competition. The club is moving forwards again and I am sure everyone will be refreshed and ready to go again next season.
Update on Coaches
The coaching structure has stayed the same really in the last 12 months. However, we have seen an increased amount of coaching given by Richard Howarth. It is great to have Richard on board with us and the athletes respond very well to him. With Ian stepping back from face-to-face club responsibilities, it was important to ask Richard to step in a little more. Al continues to deliver amazing sessions and brings a wonderful humour to the club, getting the best from all the athletes. Jenna is still very much in a coaching capacity, although the introduction of a little one has certainly increased her commitments. Once again though, the Boccia Sheffield family help out with babysitting duties during the training sessions.
Update on Competitions
It has been very refreshing and well needed that the competition structure is back up and running. This has been a welcome relief to everyone, providing a focus for the athletes and coaches, giving everyone something to aim for. Although the whole competition structure won’t get going fully until next season, it has still seen several athletes compete in competitions.
The Back to Boccia competitions have seen lots of our athletes compete in the home competition. The competition was held at Ponds Forge in Sheffield and this was a great opportunity for athletes to get back into the mindset of competition again. Although results didn’t really go our way on the day, it was wonderful to see everyone back competing again and this was definitely a sign of bigger and better things to come.
Sam, Amy, Jason and Lee also attended various Back to Boccia competitions in other areas of the country and undoubtedly this gave them some much needed competition practice. Amy has absolutely thrived in the BC5 category and has been right up there challenging in every competition. Jason and Lee have seen success and have each medalled in these competitions. As an individual, I think it is fair to say Sam has had a fantastic season, winning his first every GOLD medal at a Boccia England competition. This is a huge achievement and one that Sam has worked so hard to achieve. It certainly proves that hard work pays off. On the back of Sam’s success in competitions, he has also been invited to an invite only competition, run by Boccia England and GB Boccia. A great end to the season for Sam, well done.
Our biggest success has got to have come in the Super League, and this has been a long success story. Back in 2019, the Super League competition began, and this saw two of the Super League fixture days completed. Having never played in the Super League before, it was a huge achievement just getting there. However, in true Leslie Martin style, we weren’t there just to make up the numbers! No, we were there to win. And this is exactly what we did on the first two fixture days, we came away with the GOLD medal in both competitions.

However, when the pandemic hit, the Super League was suspended and at the time we didn’t know that this would continue for two years! So, having gone into the pandemic on a high, it was now time to pick ourselves back up and try and compete again. This was something that we found very difficult to do, after two years, we finished bottom of the group. In the third fixture day and on the final fixture day we needed one win to gain promotion. Somehow, we had left it until the last match, to say I was nervous is a huge understatement. I had no fingernails left!!!! So, in the final match, we had so much pressure on ourselves but we held our nerve and came out victorious. This has got to be the biggest success in the club’s team history. We had gained promotion to the Super League Division 1! Kyle was determined to do it with his team and that he certainly did! Well done to Kyle, Amy, Lee and Jason for an outstanding achievement.
Funding
The club is still very much in a healthy position with funds, and I would like to say a big thankyou to the Martin Family who held a fundraising night in memory of Leslie with all of the money coming to the club. This has helped pay for competition fees for everyone and has really helped with the successful running of the club.
School Club Links
Unfortunately, the school club links have not really been existent through the pandemic and the school is only just about getting going with boccia again. This is an area that we are going to rebuild and hopefully soon we will see some strong links formed again, with the opportunity of inviting some players to the club.
Home Tournaments
We have not held any home tournaments in the past 12 months. However, we are now keen and in a better position to try and host some tournaments again. The first one we will be looking at will be the LM Cup and this will be to continue Leslie Martin’s legacy through the club. We will build on from here to try and host a regional boccia competition when possible.
The Upcoming Season
We are all looking forward to the upcoming season and hopefully this will provide some much-needed focus for everyone. Competitions will be coming thick and fast this year and there will be lots of travelling. With none of the BE competitions being held in Sheffield for the first time in the club’s history, this will mean more travelling and no home city competitions. A big shake up in the grand scheme of things.
I am sure that we will get back to some success and find that winning formula once again. You all work incredibly hard and we are proud of the club that we have. Success will always come on the back of hard work, and you all show that.
I would just like to take this opportunity to thank everyone involved in the club. Our coaches have shown once again that they are some of the best in the country, running training sessions week in and week out for our athletes. Our athletes have also shown that they are some of the best in the country, even through tough times we have come back firing! And of course, all of our PAs/parents and visitors we couldn’t run the club without you. Thanks for bringing all the athletes and being as committed to the club as them.
Here is to another very happy and successful year of Boccia, good luck everyone!

Treasurer’s Report
From a financial perspective, this year has seen a return to much of the normal boccia activity – membership fees have been paid and competitions have been entered.
Almost all of the club’s donated income (£2,000) came from the fundraising activities of Kyle Martin’s family. We are deeply grateful for the family’s ongoing support of the club. The family asked that we put £500 of this money aside to support Kyle in his boccia activities. We have therefore set up a restricted fund containing this amount and are using it as requested. Just over £100 of income came from the sale of boccia kit, with the remaining amount coming from other donations and from Amazon Smile. When shopping at Amazon, please consider using this link, which earns the club a small amount of money at no cost to you - https://smile.amazon.co.uk/ch/1179188-0
As normal, most of the club’s expenditure concerned membership of Boccia England (£98) and Special Olympics Sheffield (£215) and competition entry fees - Boccia England (£455) and Greenbank Sports Centre – which shows under ‘Other Competitions’ (£40).
Having not charged anything for membership last year, Boccia England reduced its membership fees this year. For comparison, the figures for 2019/20 were: Boccia England Membership £145, Special Olympics Sheffield Membership £175, Boccia England Competitions £540 and Other Competitions £195.
Other expenditure was venue hire, when Talbot school wasn’t available (£51.60) and DBS checks, which are required as part of our commitment to safeguarding (£50.40). The club also spent £325 on boccia kit, £125 of which was for boccia snoods for Covid protection. The club did not charge for these. The remaining money for boccia kit has either been paid back to the club or was expected shortly after the year-end.
A new item of expenditure is expenses. Having fewer coaches available to attend competitions has put increasing financial pressure on our existing volunteers. The club has therefore decided to reimburse our coaches’ hotel and travelling expenses (£224.40). The remaining £305.10 listed under Expenses (restricted) was to support Kyle’s boccia activities (hotel and travelling expenses) in accordance with his family’s wishes.
At the end of the year, the club’s income was greater than its expenditure, resulting in a surplus over the year of £377.08. The club now has £9,100.41 in the bank. £8,662.45 is in the general fund and can be used in payment of any of the club’s normal boccia activities, £243.06 is restricted to running the Leslie Martin Memorial Competitions and £194.90 is restricted to supporting Kyle’s boccia activities.

Secretary’s Report
Acting as both Secretary and Treasurer, it’s sometimes difficult to decide which particular hat I’m wearing. As the club has generally returned to normal, my main activities have been running the club’s online links with Boccia England, first for our various memberships (athletes, the clubs and the teams) and second for entering competitions. All this continues to run as smoothly as Boccia England’s systems allow.

The procedures undertaken do not provide all the evidence that would be required in an audit, and consequently no opinion is given as to whether the accounts present a ‘true and fair’ view and the report is limited to those matters set out in the statement below.
Independent Examiner's Statement
In connection with my examination, no material matters have come to my attention which gives me cause to believe that in, any material respect:
-
