Section C Objectives and activities
To advance the Christian faith in accordance with our Basis of Faith primarily within Pemberton, Wigan and the surrounding area.
Summary of the objects of the charity set out in its governing document
This also can include other charitable purposes as shall, in the opinion of the members of the Church, put into practice the Christian faith including the prevention and relief of need, hardship and sickness; the advancement of education; and the provision of facilities in the interests of social welfare for individuals who have need of such facilities by reason of their youth, age infirmity or disability, financial hardship or social circumstances with the object of improving their conditions of life.
This year has been one where the corona virus pandemic struck the UK, with many resulting restrictions on normal activities. Despite this, and in response to this the church continued its operations, to the best of our ability and resources, seeking to operate wisely within the law and guidance issued by the government and authorities. When it was not permitted for us to hold physical meetings in April, May and June 2020, we offered a live streaming Sunday service on the internet, which our pastor conducted, broadcast from a church in Southport. As soon as it was permitted for places of worship to open, from July 2020 we did so, holding services of worship on Sunday mornings, and Wednesday evenings every week at Rehoboth Chapel, Wardley Street, Pemberton, Wigan, WN5 8BU. We used this chapel regularly because its greater size meant more could be accommodated in the building, whilst maintaining social distancing in line with government guidance.
Summary of the main activities undertaken for the public benefit in relation to these objects (include within this section the statutory declaration that trustees have had regard to the guidance issued by the Charity Commission on public benefit)
To facilitate the opening for worship, we introduced many measures such as seating allocation and marking, ventilation, hand sanitiser, one ways systems, limits on capacity, providing face masks at the door on the way in. We also implemented a more rigorous cleaning schedule between all meetings, and a couple of days delay between meetings to ‘quarantine’ the building. We have also advertised our worship to the general public via our website, as well as using social media, notice boards on the outside of the buildings, leaflets, fliers, and word of mouth. The only interruption to these regular Sunday and Wednesday meetings was for a few weeks in November 2020 due to lockdown restrictions, when we conducted services online via Zoom. But as soon as we were able to open again in December 2020 we did so and remained open physically for worship every week since then, in order to provide the much needed benefit of providing a place of worship and spiritual instruction in our locality. The Church advances Christian religion by the preaching of the Gospel, and dissemination of literature and word of mouth conversations, as well as information on our website and social media. In order to keep within the government guidelines, other regular activities such as Oasis coffee, craft and toddlers mornings, an English club for those who want to improve their spoken and written English, and after school groups for primary school aged children, as well as holding services in a local care home for the elderly, were suspended for the whole year. The church has continued to provide pastoral support to persons and practical help to those with whom it has come into contact who are in need. Much of this was done on the telephone rather than by face to face contact, although funerals were still conducted by the pastor on our church premises. The church has financially supported the work of Christian organisations that work in the UK and overseas. When planning and carrying out our activities, the trustees confirm that they have considered the Commission’s guidance on public benefit, and in particular the guidance for charities which are primarily concerned with the advancement of religion.

Section D Achievements and performance
Summary of the main achievements of the charity during the year
The church has provided:
-
A Covid-Safe place of worship, operating within government guidelines, for persons in our locality to physically attend, in every week when it was legal for persons to do so during the pandemic.
-
• Weekly Christian worship services and teaching meetings which are also open to the public.
-
Services of worship on both Sunday mornings, and Wednesday evenings, for all who wished to attend, held at Rehoboth chapel.
-
An extra service was held at Jireh chapel at Christmas
-
A baptismal service was held at Jireh chapel in October 2020.
-
Information in the form of a letter, along with a Christian tract, distributed to over 1,900 homes in the local area in the weeks leading up to Christmas, 2020.
-
Information in the form of a letter, along with Christian tract, distributed to over 2,400 homes in the local area in the week before Easter 2021.
-
For those not able to attend our regular services, we made audio recordings of our services and distributed them either via CD in the local area to those who wanted them.
-
We also made audio recordings of our weekly Sunday services, and uploaded audio recordings of our services each week to our church website, which is available to the general public.
-
Additional posts and videos were made available to the general public, such as children’s talks on our Facebook page.
Performance:
-
Attendance at our worship services has been maintained at good levels despite the pandemic. On occasions it was at about half the pre-pandemic levels, but for much of the time we have seen the majority of those attending pre-pandemic attending our regular Sunday services.
-
At our services of worship, members of the public who are not currently members of the church have been regularly present. This we believe is important in the continuance of our work.
-
An architect drew up plans for the extension of one of the buildings.
-
• The financial position of the charity is one where our expenditure exceeded our income, this deficit was met from our reserves. We note that the reserves, though sufficient to meet this deficit currently, are being reduced, and this will need to be addressed in the future.
Section E Financial review
Brief statement of the charity’s policy on reserves
Our aim as a charity is to look to keep at least six months’ income in our reserves. At present, the level of our reserves is higher than this, but this is reasonable because the church is currently operating at a deficit, and they are required for planning in the medium term.
