SHARED AREA
Report from the trustees for the reporting year 5[th ] April 2022
The trustees of Shared Area’s annual report and accounts for the reporting year 2021. This report complies with the Charities Act 2011.
Charitable Purpose / Aims of Shared Area:
“To advance the education of the public, in particular but not exclusively, in the UK government key-stage subjects and curriculums, by the provision of structured educational media and learning resources.”
The charitable purpose and aim of Shared Area is to provide free education to everyone:
We believe that everybody should have access to education regardless of their background, location, or circumstances
We also believe that everybody learns differently.
Our aim is to provide free educational content that is
accurate
correct
safe
and in multiple formats,
by working with educators, companies and learners:
For many years, when people needed to learn, they would go to a library to search for books.
Now people use search engines. Unfortunately the result is often merely time spent searching through useless
content or paid for content.
Lets make the Internet a place of learning
We are building the library of the future!
Every lesson,
on any subject,
available forever, in any learning style, completely free, for anyone to use. Verified as correct! Verified as safe!
Working With Educators
There are 8.7 million school children in England
-
4.7 million primary
-
3.3 million secondary
-
580,000 independent
-
130,000 special needs
There are 450,000 school teachers in England
-
250,000 primary
-
200,00 secondary
If each Secondary School Teacher Uploads 1 video and 1 question then this would be 200,000 Videos and 200,000 Test Questions
Working With Industry
If every company uploaded their job descriptions and vacancies:
We could shape the career choices for not only millions of school children, but also millions of adults looking to re-skill.
As a nation, and maybe internationally, we would be able to:
-
See all the employment areas that need qualified staff
-
Focus on creating learning resources for these areas to train people for these jobs
Objectives
Our overall objective is to provide freely accessible learning and testing content for all subjects at all levels.
Our primary objective is Safeguarding.
Safeguarding Content
Safe For Schools
Content needs to be:
True, Non-offensive, Relevant for the level of study.
To ensure this, teachers will check each other's content and verify all of the above criteria are met before content is released onto the SFS.SharedArea.org website.
This SFS subdomain guarantees that content is always S afe F or S chools ( SFS )
Our second objective is to focus on covering GCSE Subjects.
The average learner will sit around 10 GCSEs. This equals around 400 learning requirements (things that can be tested or observed)
If each teacher spent just one day making and recording one lesson on their specialist subject area, for each of those 400 learning requirements, there would be on average 500 videos/test questions for learners to use.
But how do you choose from this many videos:
Our Third objective is to focus on how to help people find content that is right for them. Using Tags we can categorise the videos to ensure that learners find the right learning style for them:
Example Tags:
Fun, exciting, happy, text, talking, animation, pictures, Reading, Watching, Listening, Demonstrations, Through-music, Animations, Worked examples, Conversations, Language, Dialects, Infographics, Metaphors ....and many more ways to tag and categories learning!
With 5.4 million secondary school children who can help to tag lessons: That is a lot of help to find the right lessons!
Over the Last year:
Over the last year Shared Area has not fund raised and has continued to focus on how to deliver content. It was the intention to launch fund raising and Shared Area as a whole during 2020/2021. Unfortunately this was not possible due to pandemic related illness and the caring commitments of all three trustees.
Sadly, during 2021/2022 one of the founding trustees, David Brewer, a life-long supporter of improved education suffered from a number of age related falls. It is with a heavy heart that we share the news of David’s upcoming departure as a trustee of our charity, SharedArea. Despite his unwavering dedication and support in our mission to enhance education, David's health has been in decline, and he will be stepping down in 2023.
We would like to take this opportunity to express our deep gratitude for David's invaluable contributions in establishing SharedArea and for his lifelong commitment to the cause. Our thoughts and well-wishes are with him as he navigates this difficult time.
As we move forward, we are confident that a suitable successor will be appointed to continue David's legacy and efforts towards our mission. Although the pandemic presented significant challenges, we remain steadfast in our commitment to delivering content and spreading our message. We look forward to officially launching the charity in 2023 and building upon the foundation laid by David and the other founding trustees.
