Higher Mill Museum Trust Chairman's Annual Report for 2024 1. Flnance Early In the year realization was that the Trust must find ways of gener8ting an income to cover annth71 running costs. To this end a sueSsful application was submitted to the °Steps to Su8tainability° programme. We were fortunate to have two members selected to join the fund generation course. This a grant of over £1 1,0011 whkh funded the de8ty7 ak developme of a new Interactkve web8fte and other lesser projects. Cuffent funds are circa £37,000 on which interest is being generated at about £600 p.a. (Treasurerfs report lo ¢onfim). In addition, the Friends organised one Quiz Night for the benefft of the Trust bn'nging some £300, Transfer of the museum guth books to the Trust as well as Bernard Rostron's artwork have provided further, useful revenue streams. Our Treasurer of many years Mr Ron Howell relired and moved to Nottlngham and we wish him well. Due to Changes in bankin9 law for Gharitie$, our new Trea8urer BFian Essex devoted many hours and enoFF>IOU$ patience to creating new bank accourrts. During 2024 the Trust has applied for Gift Aid. 2. Trust Membershlp 3. Webslte ThFs yeor has w the desigFF and develom of ? new site. It was ffftanwl with the help of the Steps to Sust8inabilty grarrt. The site was designed by Chris Mason & Associates. We must now exploit arKI derive advanlage from this new web srte, and this will be a focus for'2sf28. 4. Higher Mill There is continuing conc8m about lh8 condttion of Trfher both with regard to its maintenance and fhe condition of the exhibits. Major concem over the waterwheel, which is regarded a8 the jewel in the Helmshore crown, and which is not possible to operate for (he benefrt of the visiting public. It was temporarily repaired and functkoned well for the Success HRH Princess Anne visit in April. The Tt commissioned a survey by G & H Spender and a very detailed report has been 8ubmitt8d. Full restoration of the wheel could be about £130,000. In the meantime, LCC Museum Service has volunteered a fechnical team fo undertakè 50rne Testorafve WOTk, which will require the replacement and r8pair of bolts that are securing the structure. Our vision would see a fvlly restored waterwheel coupled to functioning fulling stock8 a8 it was a few years ago. lfi addftion, we envisage using the vtheel to thive anpjllary madiiriery liouÈed on the g.round Iloor. It Is understood that LCC will also be ¢arrying out remedial work on the window frames in Higher Mill. 6. Jotnt PlannlThg hleetthg. Despite a long delay, two meetings were held before Changes in personnel took place, with Kathryn Boothroyd, Libraries and Heritage Manager, leaving to join Liverpool County Council. She is being replaced on the 1st Al by fr18athw Fox. As yet w6 have had no contacl with Iter. but it is enged that our aims and objectives will have to be explained to He8ther Fox, and the process for a joint'forward plan, will have to be evolved. 6. Wislon and Asplratlons. The 2020 Headland Destgn pban was commt88ioned by the Tnmt as a fiF8t attempt to quantty and demonstrate our vision for the ftrture. It was always intended to be a dis¢ussion document whiGh Trust members could critique, amend, or agree with, to help them to communicate their ideas for Higher Mill. We now need to rnove f¢JTward with these plans foF Higher 11. However, these improvements to CFeate superior visttor draw are unlikely to happen, given the state of public finan8 now and in the near fvrture. If thanges be wrought in .her mi. then they Gan only be through the efforts of Ihe Trust itself. We Can achieve this. We can apply for grantg, but we do need & plan to work to. It is Suggested that the Heathand plan is used as a discussion basis, both for ourselves and for the Joint Planning Committee. Peter Janczyc (Chairfflan)
