Trustees Report
Following a successful and fruitful previous 12 months, there has been an unfortunate dilution and diminution of the normal activities of the Oxford Initiative for British Islam (OIBI) for the year 2024. This is the direct result of the lingering consequences precipitated by the Covid pandemic. Owing to the drastic and unexpected reduction in general membership donations during and immediately after Covid, this has obliged OIBI to move from its prominent high-rent city centre premises in Oxford because the commercial landlords, unlike other property owners obdurately refused to forgive or ameliorate the rental backlog that had accumulated during the Covid lockdowns. They insisted on full payment of all outstanding rent. OIBI was then forced to down scale and is now located in a smaller office unit elsewhere in the city.
While OIBI's usual public lectures and monthly seminars now take place mainly online, regular meetings and individual consultations are still held in the office to coordinate the promotion of an integrated, inclusive and indigenous Islam in the United Kingdom. Among other inter-related endeavours, the OIBI convenes weekly Qur'an seminars online that critically dissects, discusses and debates Islam's transcendent text. These structured classes attract many progressive and other thinking Muslims not only from Britain but from across the world as well. This declared mission to educate and empower UK Muslims to become theologically self-empowered in order to resist non-scriptural extremism and Islamic militancy remains a consistent OIBI priority. This crucial objective is also reinforced on a weekly basis when trailblazing hybrid Friday congregational prayers are held to inform and inspire Muslims to reject the toxic warping and the brazen contamination of their faith by the orthodox (unaccountable) Islamic clergy.
Aside from the unique weekly Qur'an seminars as well as the forward-looking Friday prayers that welcome both females and males with is resonating message on inclusivity and integration, OIBI has boldly championed a tolerant and liberal Islam in Britain through important public speaking engagements, press articles and media interviews. In addition to presenting scholarly papers at the Academy of Ideas conference in London in August 2024, giving evidence to a Parliamentary Select Committee on Islamic fundamentalism and speaking at several educational institutions, Dr Taj Hargey has courageously advanced – in the face of stiff ultra-conservative opposition – a truly authentic Qur'anic Islam that is erudite, egalitarian and enlightened. Unlike populist Islam that is entirely dependent on the latter-day fabricated human sources ( hadith , shari'ah , fatwahs , etc) that has insidiously warped the pristine teachings of the faith, OIBI upholds exclusive loyalty to Islam's sacred scripture alone. This profound message of a solely Qur'anic Islam advancing mutual coexistence and ideological tolerance has been amplified by Dr Hargey in his many well-received newspapers articles, various radio interviews, podcasts and TV appearances during the past year.
The resumption of OIBI's full academic programme, together with its allied scholarly activities is realistically contingent upon securing regular income streams and larger individual donations. Without adequate financing, its laudable mission in facilitating beneficial multi-faith interaction in the United Kingdom will be impeded or sadly delayed. So, it imperative that new and enduring sponsorship for OIBI is acquired so that this essential task can be realised sooner than later.
Finally, on behalf of all trustees, I would like to thank all our members, donors, supporters, volunteers, staff and the local community for their continued support during the year.
The report was approved by the board of trustees and signed on their behalf by: Dr Taj Hargey
Independent Examiner's Report on the Receipts and Payments Accounts
Report to the members of The Oxford Initiative for British Islam on the Receipts and Payments Accounts for the year ended 31 December 2024 set out on pages 4 and 5
Charity reg. 1179049
Respective responsibilities of trustees and examiner
The charity's trustees are responsible for the preparation of the accounts. The charity's trustees consider that an audit is not required for this year under section 43(2) of the Charities Act 1993 and that an independent examination is needed under the 1993 Act.
It is my responsibility to;
-
examine the accounts under section 43 of the 1993 Act
-
to follow the procedures laid down in the general Directions given by the Charity Commission (under section 43(7)(b) of the 1993 Act, and
-
to state whether particular matters have come to my attention.
Basis of independent examiner's statement
My examination was carried out in accordance with general directions given by the Charity Commission. An examination includes a review of the accounting records kept by the charity and a comparison of the accounts presented with those records. It also includes consideration of any unusual items or disclosures in the accounts, and seeking explanations from the trustees concerning any such matters. The procedures undertaken do not provide all the evidence that would be required in an audit, and consequently no opinion is given as to whether the accounts present a true and fair' view and the report is limited to those matters set out in the statement below.
Independent examiner's statement
In connection with my examination, no matter has come to my attention:
(1) which gives me reasonable cause to believe that in, any material respect, the requirements:
● to keep accounting records in accordance with section 41 of the 1993 Act; and
● to prepare accounts which accord with the accounting records and comply with the accounting requirements of the 1993 Act have not been met; or
(2) to which, in my opinion, attention should be drawn in order to enable a proper understanding of the accounts to be reached
