## **Activities in the year 2022-23**

There is continuing request to provide further training for the rehab team that includes doctors, therapists and nurses who are now attempting to run rehabilitation departments in the regions. However, due to the ongoing pandemic face-to-face training programmes have been put on hold. For the same reason, due to the Covid pandemic, Global Rehabilitation’s support to rehabilitation doctors in Madagascar had to move online and we are exploring new ways of supporting our Malagasy colleagues using internet- and phonebased technologies.

We have all become much more dependent on the internet since the onset of the Covid-19 Pandemic, and have got used to holding meetings, attending family reunions, and learning online. This cannot be achieved without a reliable internet connection which unfortunately remains to be the situation of many of our Malagasy colleagues. We at Global Rehabilitation are aware how important a sufficiently fast and reliable internet connection is to our partners, and we have been helping provide them with this vital tool. We have been providing financial support to our colleagues in Madagascar to get uninterrupted internet access and are continuing to do so. We are submitting the expenses incurred for this along with the returns this year and will do the same next year. Having internet connection has enabled GR to have zoom meetings with the Malagasy colleagues to plan further service developments and academic activities. Using the internet connection allows AMPR members to directly access educational resources they wouldn’t otherwise be able to.

The charity was unable to carry out any of the proposed plans for fund raising events due to the various unforeseen circumstances that included having to cancel a fund-raising event at the last minute due to adverse weather incurring some financial loss. One of our trustees, Prof Anne Chamberlain, put up a stall at the local Farmers market at Oakwood, in October 2022. This brought lots of enquiries about what GR does and nice discussions with people who had been to Madagascar or Mauritius, and a few sales of Malagasy trivia.

**Proposed activities for 2023 – 2024:**

The charity continues to work with the Malagasy team to plan and develop further training in Rehabilitation Medicine. Discussions are still ongoing with the Madagascar colleagues and the university of Antananarivo to formulate a curriculum to run a second diploma programme in Rehabilitation medicine. This time it will be delivered jointly by trainers from Yorkshire and by the Malagasy team, many of whom are graduates of the first diploma and, as the first cohort of Malagasy rehabilitation doctors, have gone on to form a dynamic association of rehabilitation medicine (AMPR-Mada), conduct research and publish papers. We have been able to make slow progress in this area due to the Malagasy team being busy dealing with natural disasters like a heavy cyclone causing a lot of flooding affecting not just service delivery but impacting on the daily routines of many professionals.

The AMPR wish to celebrate the 10[th] anniversary of their association in August 2023. It has been agreed that atleast 2 of the GR trustees will travel to Madagascar to help run the celebration and use the opportunity to discuss future training and service development programmes. The details of this event will be presented in the next report.
