FOR THE YEAR ENDED 30 NOVEMBER 2024

The trustees present their annual report and financial statements for the year ended 30 November 2024.

The financial statements have been prepared in accordance with the accounting policies set out in note 1 to the financial statements and comply with the charity's constitution for charitable incorporated organisations, the Charities Act 2011 and "Accounting and Reporting by Charities: Statement of Recommended Practice applicable to charities preparing their accounts in accordance with the Financial Reporting Standard applicable in the UK and Republic of Ireland (FRS 102)" (effective 1 January 2019).

Objectives and activities

The prevention of cruelty towards and alleviation of animal suffering by promoting humane behaviour towards animals and higher animal welfare standards through the provision of education, advice and support to individuals and communities for the appropriate treatment and care of working and other kept animals.

Public benefit

The trustees have paid due regard to guidance issued by the Charity Commission in deciding what activities the charity should undertake.

Achievements and performance

Significant activities and achievements against objectives

Increasing Community Awareness and Foodbank Support:

In 2024, Treat Me Kind significantly increased community awareness and support through our expanded foodbank initiatives. Having successfully distributed new collection boxes to local businesses to raise awareness and funds, directly supporting our mission to aid vulnerable pet owners. We also received a generous legacy donation to an online funeral giving platform, reinforcing our commitment to developing legacy giving as a sustainable funding strategy. We also secured a local community grant to help support our foodbank partnership work.

Focused Growth in Foodbank Partnerships:

We continued our work with foodbanks throughout Sussex, adapting our well-known Shoebox Appeal to provide staple pet food items alongside human ones. We extended the initiative to now focus on including items like self-heating blankets, toys, and coats for pets as well during the winter period, having realised the true depth of the cost-of-living crisis.

Innovative Fundraising and Corporate Engagement:

Treat Me Kind registered with JustGiving to simplify digital fundraising, therefore improving engagement by donors. We also signed up to Work for Good, to help support us when reaching out to small and medium sized businesses. Up next is trialling contactless donation devices, further modernising our fundraising capability.

Strategic Outreach and Surveying:

A comprehensive survey was distributed to our foodbank partners to assess their needs. This information gives us important insights into the development of our support services and allows us to shape our work in ways that have more significant effect.

International Partnerships:

Treat Me Kind continued to develop its international partnership by adding Nine Lives animal rescue in Greece. This has further expanded our network internationally, facilitating joint fundraising appeal and the raising of animal welfare awareness.

Financial review

During the financial year the charity made a surplus of £8,998 (2023: £97 Surplus). A grant of £10,000 was received in the year from The Sussex Community Foundation.

Reserves policy

The trustees are gearing up to revisit the development of a new reserves policy as the charity's capital increases. This forthcoming policy will focus on the organisations approach to reserves and outline appropriate guidelines for their management. This proactive step reflects the trustees' commitment to regularly reassessing financial strategies and ensuring they align with the evolving needs and goals of the charity.

Plans for future periods

Deepening and Expanding Foodbank Partnerships:

We are going to further develop the network of foodbanks, extend the geographical coverage, and react to newly emerging needs. Building on the findings of our survey, we will work toward the provision of tailored emergency supplies, including selfwarming blankets, pet coats, and enrichment toys to support families and their pets during difficult times. We will make seasonal appeals to deliver these vital supplies and give leaflets to local businesses about our mission and community impact. We have plans to also sign up to an online legacy giving platform to support our long-term legacy program plans.

Improved Fundraising Innovation:

We will extend the use of contactless donation devices in local businesses to provide modern and easy ways for our supporters to donate, complementing digital platform maximisation. Outreach to local corporate partners increases visibility and passive fundraising.

Strengthened Community Engagement and Volunteer Recruitment:

We are now strengthening our volunteer recruitment program in identified areas of expertise, such as grant writing, graphic design, and community fundraising. We will reach out to a larger geographical area across West Sussex to distribution more collection boxes, combined with community outreach, this will help increase awareness and involvement of the public, building stronger links at a local level.

Simplify operations to realise efficiencies:

We will enhance our means of resource utilisation, financial management, and tracking success. Leverage technology to offer effective delivery of services.

In short, Treat Me Kind plans for further growth through strategic planning, deeper community involvement, and innovative fundraising. We commit to providing vulnerable pets and their owners with vital resources and compassionate care during challenging times.

Structure, governance and management

The charity is controlled by its governing document, a constitution for charitable incorporated organisations, the charity registered with the charity commission on 25th June 2018.

The charity is a Public Benefit Entity as defined by FRS 102.

The charity has taken advantage of the provisions in the SORP for charities applying FRS 102 Update Bulletin 1 not to prepare a Statement of Cash Flows.

The financial statements have departed from the Charities (Accounts and Reports) Regulations 2008 only to the extent required to provide a true and fair view. This departure has involved following the Statement of Recommended Practice for charities applying FRS 102 rather than the version of the Statement of Recommended Practice which is referred to in the Regulations but which has since been withdrawn.

The financial statements are prepared in sterling, which is the functional currency of the charity. Monetary amounts in these financial statements are rounded to the nearest £.

Expenditure is classified by activity. The costs of each activity are made up of the total of direct costs and shared costs, including support costs involved in undertaking each activity. Direct costs attributable to a single activity are allocated directly to that activity. Shared costs which contribute to more than one activity and support costs which are not attributable to a single activity are apportioned between those activities on a basis consistent with the use of resources. Central staff costs are allocated on the basis of time spent, and depreciation charges are allocated on the portion of the asset’s use.

Liabilities are recognised as expenditure as soon as there is a legal or constructive obligation committing the charity to that expenditure, it is probable that a transfer of economic benefits will be required in settlement and the amount of the obligation can be measured reliably. Expenditure is accounted for on an accruals basis and has been classified under headings that aggregate all cost related to the category. Where costs cannot be directly attributed to particular headings they have been allocated to activities on a basis consistent with the use of resources.
