## **Objectives and activities**
## **The charity's objects**
To promote, improve, develop and maintain public appreciation of music in jazz and similar genre by:
- (i) the presentation of high quality artist's work in the city of Leeds and farther afield if necessary;
- (ii) engaging individuals through music in order to develop their interests, skills, capacities and capabilities, and thereby providing recreational and leisure time activity in the interests of social welfare, well-being and promotion of community cohesion;
- (iii) such other means at the trustees discretion.
## **The charity's main activities**
JazzLeeds is a volunteer led organisation providing an extensive and sustainable programme of jazz, associated music events and related community activities. JazzLeeds encourages and develops the local music and creative arts scene, supports new jazz activities, including promoting European and International collaboration and develops new audiences for jazz.
As a charity, one of JazzLeeds aims is to use live music to bring communities together and promote wellbeing.
## **Public benefit statement**
In setting our objectives and planning our activities our JazzLeeds trustees have given serious consideration to the Charity Commission’s general guidance on public benefit and in particular the promotion of the arts and culture, the promotion of volunteering and the advancement of education.
## **Achievements and performance**
This report looks at our JazzLeeds activity over the 12 month period September 2023 to August 2024, assesses our achievements and whether we have achieved our goals. Details of our programme are given in the appendix.
In total we put on 91 concerts and events – fewer than last year, which is in line with our desire to “do less, but do it better”. We programmed a total of 125 bands during the year.
Our audiences increased significantly with our total audience exceeding 8,000 for the first time and an additional 1,500 or so people attending our two festival stages at Cookridge Street (Leeds Jazz Festival) and Regent Street (Chapel Allerton Arts Festival).Our evening audience average was around 72 (61 the previous year), our Sunday afternoons was around 67 (62 the previous year).
We held a total of 16 evening concerts and 4 festival evening concerts during the year. We decided in future to run our evening series just between September and April (with other evening gigs as part of our two festivals), due to smaller audiences for regular concerts in the summer months.
One special concert in the autumn was a Black Lives matters event presentation to steel pannist Dudley Nesbit.
Our Christmas concert featured young musicians from Roundhay School who had all been part of our Jazz Education project.
Our spring season included our two Conservatoire Collection concerts in April with six final year bands from the Leeds Conservatoire BA Jazz Course.
We presented two youth big bands from Grammar School at Leeds and Leeds University Union Big Band, the latter where we also supported students from the University to let them see how to run concerts.

## **Achievements and performance (continued)**
As part of the Leeds Jazz Festival in May we put on 11 bands in total with two highly successful evening concerts - Alan Barnes plays Goodman, and the Fergus McCreadie trio, a successful LJF festival launch event at Seven Arts and a well-attended (if rather wet!) Cookridge Stage event with an eclectic mix of seven Leeds bands.
Our summer season included a popular pay as you feel Courtyard summer series in July/August.
At the Chapel Allerton Arts Festival Concerts during August/September we programmed two evening concerts – Carioca Soul and Adam Glasser playing jazz music from South Africa. We were one of the sponsors of the Chapel Allerton Arts Festival this year.
The partnership with Howard Assembly Room continued with two successful concerts featuring Jasmine/Emma Johnson’s Gravy Boat and Tom Ollendorff with Aaron Parks.
Our bi-monthly rush hour jazz events in Seven Arts bar (with a visiting guest playing with the JazzLeeds trio) continue to flourish. Pay as you Feel events proved very popular during the year generating good collections to pay the bands (in one case over £600!).
At Northlight Arts we continued our presence there with Sunday morning workshops with Dom Moore, the evening Instant World Orchestra with Richard Ormrod and our monthly jam sessions. There was no jazz choir this year – it will hopefully return soon. The Jazz Workshop has around 20 regular players, and the Instant World orchestra a pool of 25 musicians.
Our jam sessions continued monthly at Northlight, but the venue does not seem to attract the same audience members as at Seven Arts; the number of playing musicians is usually 10 -15. We are engaging Ben Gilbert to run the workshops in the autumn to see if the Jam Sessions can be revitalised somewhat.
We started the process of upgrading our unreliable website, and refreshing our marketing using Split designs. This included a number of focus groups with over 100 of our supporters and partners in June 2024 – most of the feedback was very positive.
Support bands - we used fourteen support bands with our evening gigs, mainly young musicians from the Leeds scene, although Seven Arts put a temporary stop on this in the summer.
Our Jazz Education Projects jointly with Leeds Junior Conservatoire ran again at Roundhay School, City of Leeds School and Allerton Grange School using funding from the Mohn-Westlake foundation. Dave Evans and Joe Moore were our tutors.
Funding – we were successful in a bid to the Combined West Yorkshire Authority for an increase in our funding - from around £5000 per year from Arts at Leeds to over £8000 for the next two years under the new funding arrangements . This is a highly competitive process. We must be doing something right!
## **Did we achieve our goals in 2023/24?**
Our main goals in 2023/4 from our Arts at Leeds funding award were as follows with comments indicating whether these were achieved :

JazzLeeds at the Festivals
We will work with the Leeds Jazz and CAAF festival teams to deliver events during the festival in May (LJF) and with the Chapel Allerton team to deliver events in September. The events promoted by JazzLeeds are:
- l Big Events (two evening concerts were held as part of LJF, two at CAAF. We also held two city centre events with Howard Assembly Room. Our international programme was a further 16 events)
- l Supporting local musicians (14 support bands, Leeds Conservatoire collections, two festival events with a total of 12 local bands)
- l A free for audience event – several were held - Cookridge Street/Regent Street tents, our summer Courtyard series, our bi-monthly Rush Hour concerts
- l Community workshops at Seven Arts and Northlight in Chapel Allerton
## **Diversity**
Our performances featured evening bands led by rising star jazz women performers -Jasmine (Jasmine Myra) and Gravy Boat (Emma Johnson) and concerts led by a number of established artists – for example Ingrid Laubrock, Alcyona Mick and Tori Freestone. We held a special concert in the autumn for Black Lives Matter, and featured groups such as the HUM gospel choir at Chapel Allerton Arts Festival.
We carry out annual monitoring of our audiences. In 2024 the gender split amongst our audience is Male 55%, Female 45 % - more balanced than in previous years. The ages of our audiences - 58% were between 25 and 64, 33% 65 + This was similar to previous years except with a slightly greater proportion in the older age bracket. Our audience has more of the people in the richest age sectors for disposable income which is a good place to be. We’d like more 16-24 year olds though
The ethnicity split in our audience in 2024 was 80% white.20% non white (of which Asian origin was 3%, Black origin 7%, Mixed 4% and other 6%) Our audience is therefore slightly more diverse than UK average (82% White 2021 Census) and the same as the diversity levels within the Leeds population (79% White in 2021 census)
## **Jazz Education**
The aim of our Jazz Education project is to enhance jazz music education provision in Leeds, using three Leeds secondary schools and also running a community Jazz education project.
The elements have been
- l To run a school Jazz band (this has been continuing at Roundhay School during 2023/4, taught by Dave Evans)
- l
To offer a taster day of music making to young people in the school who do not usually get involved in music - specifically targeting young people from non-white cultural backgrounds. Funding has been sought from Leeds Inspired, and the Mohn-Westlake Foundation to carry this out at Leeds City Academy
- l To work jointly with Leeds Junior Conservatoire to further develop the project
- l Community Jazz Workshops – we have run the Jazz Workshops and Richard Ormrod’s Instant World Orchestra at Northlight
## **Jazz in Communities 2023**
JazzLeeds is still seen as being largely a Chapel Allerton provider of jazz. We need to initiate concerts in 2024 elsewhere in the city as a means of JazzLeeds becoming a citywide provider.

Leeds as a City of Jazz
We helped Leeds celebrate its jazz heritage:
- l Jazz talk and contribution to East Street Arts Untold stories by Steve Crocker and a Civic Trust walk in New Briggate
- l Xero Slingsby concert at Seven Arts May 2024 with Fergus Quill
- l JazzLeeds celebration of our JazzLeeds history with an exhibition of art by Joe Dunn (July 2023)
## JazzLeeds regular programme 2023/4
We will run a programme of national/ international concerts, local/and community jazz events, days of jazz at the Chapel Allerton Arts Festival, Rush Hour jazz concerts jazz workshops and jazz jam sessions - all achieved.
These goals were met in whole or in part with the exception of item 4 – jazz in communities. However the 2024/5 goals for our future funding have added a number of new targets for us – on partnership work and environmental targets for example.
Thoughts for the future !
It has been a highly successful 12 months for JazzLeeds both artistically and financially.
We are addressing some of our big issues – e.g. that of marketing/web presence and the future of our jazz jam sessions.
The next big future issue for JazzLeeds is undoubtedly succession planning, and also how we continue to “do less, but do it better” in future. We will also need to work out how our Education programme fits into the current changing provision for music in Leeds. We will need to monitor the changes in running our jazz jam sessions. Finally need to look again at our participation in both the Festivals we are currently involved in. We also have to be mindful of our relationships with our partners – these are generally good at present, but experience elsewhere shows how fragile the existence of independent arts bodies can be!

## **Financial review**
The net payments for the year were £1,098, including net reciepts of £2,789 on unrestricted funds and net payments of £3,887 on restricted funds.
## **Reserves policy**
The charity's free reserves, at the year end were £47,143.
JazzLeeds has a policy of retaining a reserve of a minimum of 25% of annual turnover, which based on the 23-24 financial year equates to approximately £15,000.
The trustees acknowledge that current reserves are in excess of the amount stated in the policy, and will be reviewing the policy in the coming year. In addition, there are a number of planned activities (identified in 22/23) but due to take place in 24/25 to expend the excess reserves.

## Independent examiner's report to the trustees of JazzLeeds
I report to the charity trustees on my examination of the accounts of the charity for the year ended 30 September 2024, which are set out on pages 12 to 15.
## **Responsibilities and basis of report**
As the charity trustees you are responsible for the preparation of the accounts in accordance with the requirements of the Charities Act 2011 ('the Act').
I report in respect of my examination of the charity's accounts as carried out under section 145 of the 2011 Act. In carrying out my examination I have followed all the applicable Directions given by the Charity Commission under section 145(5)(b) of the Act.
## **Independent examiner's statement**
I have completed my examination. I confirm that no material matters have come to my attention in connection with the examination giving me cause to believe that in any material respect:
1 accounting records were not kept in respect of the charity as required by section 130 of the Charities Act; 2 the accounts do not accord with those records.
I have no concerns and have come across no other matters in connection with the examination to which attention should be drawn in this report in order to enable a proper understanding of the accounts to be reached.

## **1 Accounting policies**
## **Basis of accounting**
The trustees have taken advantage of section 133 of the Charities Act 2011 and have prepared the accounts on a receipts and payments basis.
There has been no change to the accounting policies since last year.
No changes have been made to the accounts for previous years.
## **Taxation**
As a charity the organisation benefits from rates relief and is generally exempt from income tax and capital gains tax but not from VAT. Irrecoverable VAT is included in the cost of those items to which it relates.
## **Fund accounting**
Unrestricted funds are available for use at the discretion of the trustees in furtherance of the general objectives of the charity.
Restricted funds are subjected to restrictions on their expenditure imposed by the donor or through the terms of an appeal.
Further explanation of the nature and purpose of each fund is included in the notes to the accounts.
