JazzLeeds Annual Report 2021

This report covers a number of different aspects of the JazzLeeds year up to the end of September 2021.

The Covid pandemic has continued to make it a difficult year for everyone involved in live music. During the previous year (2020) despite intermittent lockdowns we managed to still put on 34 live bands, 18 online video programmes and 4 radio presentations.

We were locked down again totally between November 2020 and May 2021 but since then restrictions have gradually been lifted and we’ve returned with 50 live music events - 39 concerts, six community jazz cafes and five “Rush Hour Jazz” gigs in the Seven Arts bar. The events included the JazzReset21 Festival in July and the Jazz and Blues Picnic in September. The majority of the bands were from the Northern regions but we also held a number of national and international concerts too.

Our main venue through all this has been Seven Arts Leeds. With Inkwell no longer available we moved our workshops and some jazz sessions down to the Café at Meanwood Valley Urban Farm. This has been a venue for folk music and they were more than willing to welcome live jazz there too.

2021 live music series

These were all live concerts held either in the main room at Seven Arts to a limited audience, or (during August) pay as you feel events outside in the courtyard

JazzLeeds Reset Festival July 17-18 July

With number restrictions still very much in place we decided to hold a low key JazzLeeds Festival as a two-day event, rather than attempt to put on something more major at City Centre venues. The two day festival was held both inside and in the courtyard at Seven Arts. The festival was a sell-out; the courtyard events were a particular success, aided by some excellent weather.

Chapel Allerton Arts Festival and the Jazz Picnic 1-5 September 2020.

The Chapel Allerton Festival was “on tour” this year and we were pleased to participate with two evenings at Seven Arts and another Jazz and Blues picnic at Gledhow Sports Club. This was a spectacular success with nearly 500 tickets sold, stalls, four excellent bands, a really appreciative audience, a helpful venue and some lovely weather. We will do it again!

We held six community Jazz Cafés - at Seven Arts on 6 Jun, 4 July, 11 July, and 10 October with two more at our new venue - Meanwood Valley Barn Café on 14 August and 11 September – a chance for many local musicians to play/sing.

We also held five rush hour jazz events in the Seven Arts Bar with guests John Quinn 02 June Brendan Duffy 07July John Scully 04 August Eliot Richards 01 September and Will Howard 06 October and the JazzLeeds

trio.

Thanks

Many thanks are due - to Seven Arts for allowing us to put the gigs on there, and waiving room hire and tech costs, to Gledhow Sports Club who hosted our Jazz and Blues picnic, to Chapel Allerton Arts Festival for restarting the festival this year, to Leeds Inspired and Arts at Leeds for funding us, to Music Leeds and Jazz North for their encouragement, to our Board of Trustees who have offered advice and guidance, and last but not least to our jazz volunteers and supporters - we couldn't have got though the year without them.

Objectives and activities (Continued)

The charity's main activities

JazzLeeds is a volunteer led organisation providing an extensive and sustainable programme of Jazz, associated music events and related community activities. JazzLeeds encourages and develops the local music and creative arts scene, supports new jazz activities, including promoting European and International collaboration and develops new audiences for jazz.

Public benefit statement

In setting our objectives and planning our activities our JazzLeeds trustees have given serious consideration to the Charity Commission’s general guidance on public benefit and in particular the promotion of the arts and culture, the promotion of volunteering and the advancement of education.

As a charity, one of JazzLeeds aims is to use live music to bring communities together and promote well-being. The lockdown has caused high levels of anxiety and depression amongst both our audiences and musicians. Our survey (June 2020) found that around half of our regular audiences were unwilling to attend indoor concerts. When possible we have tried to provide opportunities for both listening to, and playing music. We have tried to bring people together, providing some social interaction, albeit at a distance. We believe that over the summer we were the only jazz group in the north who were able to present live performances. A small "bubble" of volunteers organised and ran these concerts. The enthusiasm and joy with which gigs were received had a very positive impact on all involved.

Achievements and performance

Financial review

The net receipts for the year were £4,770, including net receipts of £720 on unrestricted funds and net receipts of £4,050 on restricted funds.

Reserves policy

The charity's free reserves, excluding fixed assets, at the year end were £42,243.

The JazzLeeds policy is to keep three months of turnover in reserve for unplanned events: currently we exceed this amount.
