Section D Achievements and performance

Summary of the main achievements of the charity during the year

Homeless Not Hopeless

Thousands of people across the country are homeless and sleep rough on the streets. What's more saddening is the number just keeps increasing. STC works closely with the homeless in our locality and we set up a monthly stand in Bradford City Centre aimed at assisting the homeless.

This can often become a very lonely time for rough sleepers who have no friends or family to turn to. STC held an event at Bradford City Park on 21 December 2019 holding a congregation specifically for the homeless which was a huge success.

STC joined the homeless and rough sleepers in the locality and indulged in a hot delectable meal and created that all-inclusive atmosphere. Services at the event extended to distributing winter gift packs, (which included clothes, dental & hygiene kits and a basic health check by on-board qualified medical practitioners.

STC also received good coverage of the event by a local newspaper recognising the amazing work it is carrying out.

Education

More than 3.7 million school-age refugee children have no school to go to. Refugees are five times more likely to be out of school than the global average.

STC sponsor Syrian refugee children for school education in Turkey. With the charity support the children have been excelling in their studies. The school has a great standard of education with a comprehensive curriculum and excellent facilities.

Section D Achievements and performance

Foodbank – Project ISHAH (I Shall Help A Hungry Home)

STC have been toiling tirelessly to make sure that no one goes hungry particularly during the coronavirus pandemic. The pandemic has caused a record 89% increase in the number of families relying on food banks. One of the charity local service users, a mother of five children reached out to STC after her fridge/freezer broke down.

She was at risk of losing the only food she had purchased through her children’s meal vouchers during COVID-19 lockdown. STC managed to secure a donated fridge/freezer and helped salvage the home from a looming food crisis. STC provided food parcels to hundreds of hungry homes in need of food aid.

A typical food parcel contains cereal or porridge, soup, pasta, rice, pasta sauce, lentils and beans, tinned meat, tinned vegetables, tea or coffee, biscuits, rice pudding or spaghetti hoops tinned fruit, UHT milk and fruit juice.

Humanitarian Aid - Yemen

In the beginning of 2019, the UN announced that the humanitarian crisis in Yemen as the worst in the world. In 2020 most of the donors to the UN ceased supporting any programs in Yemen due to the global lockdown caused by coronavirus pandemic. During this period the health care system in Yemen has fully collapsed as 3 deadly diseases took over Yemen (COVID – 19, Dengue fever & Chikungunya fever) and claimed the lives of thousands of Yemenis. The quarantine imposed on some provinces caused most people to lose their jobs, especially daily wages workers. Subsequently many households have starved to death. In provinces such as Taiz there is no drinking water system, therefore people are forced to search for clean water which are very scarce and sold in high price.

STC is working alongside local partners on the ground to ensure distribution of live saving aid is reaching those desperately in need. STC provided food, hygiene kits and clean water in order to reduce the mortality rate among the most vulnerable groups in the provinces Taiz and Sanaa. 36,000 litres of clean water provided with food baskets to 350 family members.
