This is its third year of operation. Just Shelter is a charity subject to the Charities Act 2011 (registered number: 1178694). Just Shelter - Trustees Report and Financial Statements for year ended 6 July 2022 Page 5 of 10 ## **Statement of responsibilities of the Trustees of Just Shelter** The Trustees are responsible for preparing the Annual Report and financial statements in accordance with applicable law and United Kingdom Generally Accepted Accounting Practice. Charity law requires Just Shelter to prepare a statement of financial activities and statement of assets and liabilities for each financial year, which gives a true and fair view of the state of affairs of the charity and of its financial activities for that year and adequately distinguishes any material special trust or other restricted fund. In preparing those financial statements Just Shelter is required to: a) select suitable accounting policies and then apply them consistently; - b) make judgements and estimates that are reasonable and prudent; - c) state whether the policies adopted are in accordance with the appropriate SORP on Accounting by Charities and the accounting Regulations and with applicable accounting standards, subject to any material departures disclosed and explained in the financial statements; - d) prepare the accounts on the going concern basis unless inappropriate to presume that the charity will continue to operate. Just Shelter is responsible for keeping proper accounting records which disclose, with reasonable accuracy at any time, the financial position of the charity, and to enable them to ensure that the financial statements comply with applicable Accounting Standards and Statements of Recommended Practice and the regulations made under s154 of the Charities Act 2011. They are also responsible for safeguarding the assets of the charity and hence for taking reasonable steps for the prevention and detection of fraud and other irregularities. ## Public beneft Just Shelter is aware of the Charity Commission's guidance on public benefit. Approved by the Trustees for Just Shelter on the 18 February 2023, and signed on its behalf on 20 February 2023 by John Mullaly, Treasurer Just Shelter - Trustees Report and Financial Statements for year ended 6 July 2022 Page 6 of 10 ## **Trustees Report 2021-22** In the year July 2021 to June 2022 we primarily focused our attentions helping refugees locally and campaigning to encourage our local Council to help with the Afghan refugee scheme. We were active in helping welcome families into two new local hotels housing asylum seekers and continue to help families there on a regular basis. We were central in launching a local coalition of refugee organisations to call upon Wandsworth Council to step up efforts to find accommodation as part of the Afghan Resettlement Scheme. Following on from this we welcomed an Afghan family of 7 into Earlsfield and helped them become part of the local community including holding weekly English lessons and integrating the children into schools. We made another trip to Northern France which proved difficult and has caused us to rethink our priorities as we move into 2023. Throughout the year we encouraged the local community to welcome those from far afield, including under the Ukrainian and Afghan schemes. We hosted several fundraising events and were key in campaigning for Wandsworth to become a Borough of Sanctuary. This is due to happen later in 2023. Sue Knowles 20 February 2023 Just Shelter - Trustees Report and Financial Statements for year ended 6 July 2022 Page 7 of 10 ## **Financial Summary 2021-22** ## RESULTS FOR THE YEAR In its third year of activity, 6 July 2021 to 5 July 2022, Just Shelter saw an unrestricted surplus of £2,325. Total unrestricted income for this year was £7,462 and general expenditure £5,137. ## BALANCE SHEET Just Shelter net asset position stood at £7,406 at the end of the period, all cash in hand. ## RESERVE POLICY Just Shelter has a reserve policy of holding not less than £3,000 in cash, so that it can maintain regular operations without interruptions. Accordingly, it holds regular fund-raising events. ## COMPLIANCE Just Shelter - Trustees Report and Financial Statements for year ended 6 July 2022 Page 8 of 10 The full accounts have been prepared to comply with the statutory requirements, the current Statement of Recommended Practice on Charity Accounts applying FRS102 and Just Shelter stated objectives. The accounts are unaudited as the turnover is below £100,000. Just Shelter has paid due regard to the guidance on public benefit issued by the Charity Commission and complies with section 17 of the Charities Act 2011. The charity is registered as charity number 1178694. ## STRUCTURE GOVERNANCE AND MANAGEMENT Trustees are appointed by the Chairman, Ms Sue Knowles. The financial statements have been prepared on behalf of the Trustees in accordance with FRS 102 “The Financial Reporting Standard applicable in the UK and Republic of Ireland” (“FRS 102”), “Accounting and Reporting by Charities” the Statement of Recommended Practice for charities applying FRS 102, the Charities Act 2011 and UK Generally Accepted Accounting Practice as it applies from 1 January 2015. The accounts have departed from the Charities (Accounts and Reports) Regulations 2008 only to the extent required to provide a true and fair view. This departure has involved following the Statement of Recommended Practice for charities applying FRS 102 rather than the version of the Statement of Recommended Practice which is referred to in the Regulations but which has since been withdrawn. ## Funds General funds represent the funds of Just Shelter that are not subject to any restrictions regarding their use and are available for application on the general purposes of the charity. Restricted funds represent those received for specific purposes as specified by the donors: at this time there are no restricted funds. The accounts include all transactions, assets and liabilities for which the Trustees are responsible in law. ## Income - Donatons, legacies and grants Income is recognised when Just Shelter has entitlement to the funds, any performance conditions attached to the item of income have been met, it is probable that the income will be received and the amount can be measured reliably. ## Income - Donated services and facilites Donated goods and services are recognised when receipt of the goods or services is probable and the benefit can be measured reliably. The basis of the value of the gift to the charity is the amount the Trustees would have been willing to pay to obtain those services or facilities on the open market. A corresponding amount is then recognised as expenditure in the period of receipt. Donated goods and services are recognised when the goods or services are received and are valued on the basis of the value of the gift to the charity. ## Income from investments There has been no income from investments. Just Shelter - Trustees Report and Financial Statements for year ended 6 July 2022 Page 11 of 10 ## Creditors Creditors are recognised where the charity has a present obligation resulting from a past event that will probably result in the transfer of funds to a third party and the amount due to settle the obligation can be measured or estimated reliably. ## Irrecoverable VAT Irrecoverable VAT is charged against the expenditure heading for which it was incurred. ## Note 2 Debtors There were no debtors at the end of the financial period. ## Note 3 Incoming Resources Just Shelter has raised funds by standing orders and single donations; also by fundraising activities, rather curtailed by the effect of the COVID pandemic. A list follows: ## Note 4 Direct expenditure on Operatons and supportng costs The prime work of Just Shelter is to support refugees both in camps in northern France and in the UK. Because of the COVID pandemic, Just Shelter was able to make only one such trip to Calais and Dunkirk. The cost of this trip and supplies brought for refugees, is listed below as Visiting Refugees expenses and Supplies for Refugees. Just Shelter also bought supplies for refugees housed locally in the UK as shown in Local Refugees Costs. Supporting costs includes administration services provided by Ms Madiha Sultan.
