Minister’s Report 2024- West Preston Methodist Church

While the last year has been challenging there have also been many highlights to reflect on. I continue to gratefully value the incredible people I serve alongside, many of you volunteer and support the wide range of activities across West Preston Methodist Church with little fuss each week. Where would we be without you?

In September we embarked as a circuit in a new way of working, so West Preston Methodist Church is now grouped with Hope Methodist, Hoole Methodist and Hesketh Bank Methodist churches in Mission Group 1. We welcomed Rev. Sharon Thraves (Mission Group 3) to the circuit and also Deacon Rebekah-Joy (RJ)who will work with Rev Mike in Mission Group 1. While RJ is mainly based in Hope, Hoole and Hesketh Bank, she has been much appreciated when available in West Preston.

Just before Easter this year Simon Skidmore, our Youth, Children’s and Families Worker gave in his notice having been appointed to a new post managing a Wellbeing Youth Centre in St. Helen’s where he lives. This was sad news as we have all appreciated Simon’s dedication to his role over the last 4 years with us and was much loved. We wished him well at a special joint service followed by a lunch on 5[th] May. We also gave our thanks in August 2023 to Sylvia who had been Café Manager at the @home Café for 6 months. We had hoped to have appointed someone to take on a new Community Inclusion Worker role. The last year has seen trials with our recruitment in difficult times for many employers and particularly so in the charity sector trying to fill posts. We have struggled to fill this post as a part-time role and with Simon leaving we have been able to rejig how we carry out our work and are now looking to advertise a full-time Lay Worker post with Community, Pastoral and some Children and Families work. We are also working on an Admin post to support the Ministry team across West Preston Methodist Church, which might be linked with the Circuit Administrator post to make a full-time post.

Some of the highlights from the last year. Last summer’s holiday club went very well and was loved by the children who came and wanted more. We will look forward to repeating something similar this year. The ‘Out of the Ordinary’ Advent and Christmas theme was much appreciated. Then ‘Unbounded Love of God’ Lent materials with another successful Maundy Thursday Messy Church, Communion and meal. The One Friday – Good Friday Service was very moving leading into our Easter Celebrations. The Pentecost weekend at Ingol with the prayer stations and weekend of Praise and Prayer being highly successful, “best Pentecost I’ve had” one person told me. In the last year we have welcomed in several new who have brought enthusiasm and willingness to serve which has been much appreciated.

Our Community projects have continued time with the @home café, Cottam Coffee Morning and Thrift shop supporting communities and enabling many fruitful conversations. The Cottam Coffee Morning new regularly gets 20 people each Thursday. Simon and myself have supported volunteer teams to keep this and the @home café going and we look forward to the new appointment to help us build this work up again. In November we held a Community Interest Day at Ashton, bringing various community, charity and services together to promote what they do in the community. This was very well received and we decided to repeat the

event in Cottam in May, which also went well. My thanks to all those who supported special events and / or weekly activities.

The coming year will bring new opportunities – we pray the new posts we are preparing and the new additions to our Ministry Team will enable us to build up missional activities again. I look forward to continuing to serve here in West Preston as well as being part of the Mission Group 1 Ministry and Circuit Staff Teams, I’m excited as to what the coming year will bring.
