We provide football opportunities for young people in the West Berkshire area through our volunteer-led football club. The trustees confirm that they have complied with the requirements of section 4 of the Charities Act 2011 to have due regard to the public benefit guidance published by the Charity Commission for England and Wales.

**Summary of the main activities undertaken for the public benefit in relation to these objects (include within this section the statutory declaration that trustees have had regard to the guidance issued by the Charity Commission on public benefit)**

## **Additional details of objectives and activities (Optional information)**

Our philosophy is simple – we want as many young people as possible to enjoy playing football. We endeavour to help young players expand their social, physical and mental capabilities, to develop a teamwork ethic and to watch them mature whilst understanding the values of courtesy and respect.

You **may choose** to include further statements, where relevant, about:

- policy on grantmaking;

- policy programme related investment;

Whilst we are immensely proud that some of our players have progressed to play at higher levels of the game in recent years, we recognise that our core focus is to cater for all levels of technical football ability and we always tailor our coaching accordingly.

The welfare and safeguarding of our players is fundamental to our approach. We have a dedicated Child Welfare Officer and our coaches are fully accredited in line with the English Football Associations policies and guidelines.

- contribution made by volunteers.

## Section D Achievements and performance

**Summary of the main achievements of the charity during the year**

Our club has now grown to over 260 players, participating across 16 match day teams from under 7’s to the under 18 age group. We are also providing training sessions to our Pioneers group, approximately 15 – 20 children under 6 years old on a weekly basis. This is all a great testament to the incredible work of our 40 volunteers who coach and manage the teams each week. It also reflects that our reputation continues to grow in the local community – indeed we are still having to put a number of players on wait lists as the majority of our squads are full.

As a result of this growth, we have now expanded the number of venues that our club uses in the local area – we now play our football at three local schools; Park House School, Trinity School and St Barts. School plus we use the facilities provided by Newbury Town Council, West Berkshire Council and Boxford Parish Council.

The charity has had to adapt to the Covid-19 impact on football in both the 2019/20 and 2020/21 seasons. Our club was mothballed due to the UK government lockdown for long periods of time but we were able to quickly resume our activities as soon as the government regulations allowed us to do so. Subscription levels dropped as would be expected due to the periods when we were not able to operate. We will be offering a pro rata discount to subscribers in the 2021/22 season for those that paid for periods of the previous season when there was no activity. Instead of supporting the Poppies for Kits charity, we made a direct donation of an equivalent amount, split equally with the Royal British Legion and the West Berks Food Bank. To provide an extra gift to our younger players to reflect the difficulties faced during the periods of lockdown, we purchased a copy of Marcus Rashford’s book “You Are A Champion” for all players from u7’s up to u11’s. Our football club were early adopters of protocols for our young players to ensure heading footballs was introduced in a safe and controlled manner – this was based on a number of media articles and research on this subject which we were made aware of. Further stronger guidance was issued to our coaches on this subject at the end of the 2020/21 season and this was mirrored by guidance published by the English Football Association in July 2021. In March 2021, we purchased 2 fully automatic defibrillators through the English Football Association’s Heart Safe discount scheme. They will be deployed at training sessions and home matches taking place at venues not equipped with a public access defibrillator. The incident with the Denmark player, Christian Eriksen, in Euro 2020 highlighted how important it is to use a defibrillator quickly in the event of a cardiac arrest. We were grateful for a grant from the St James Place Foundation to allow us to make this purchase.

## **Section E                    Financial review**

The trustees have felt it prudent to build a small level of reserve funding **Brief statement of the** to provide cover for unexpected expenditures during the football season. **charity’s policy on reserves** It is immediately apparent that the uncertainty caused by Covid-19 and how this appears to be making facility hire a lot more difficult for the forthcoming season, is highly likely to increase our costs to ensure that we are able to continue to provide the level of football activity that we want. Longer term, our objective is to develop a more permanent home for footballing facilities for our football club.

**Details of any funds materially in deficit**

## **Further financial review details (Optional information)**

You **may choose** to include additional information, where relevant about:

- the charity’s principal sources of funds (including any fundraising);

- how expenditure has supported the key objectives of the charity;

- investment policy and objectives including any ethical investment policy adopted.

CSA 07 Football Club

31 July 2021 **On accounts for the year ended**

**Charity** 1178637 **no (if any)**

**Set out on pages** 1 to 2

I report to the trustees on my examination of the accounts of the above charity (“the Trust”) for the year ended 31 / 07 / 2021.

## **Responsibilities and basis of report**

As the charity's trustees, you are responsible for the preparation of the accounts in accordance with the requirements of the Charities Act 2011 (“the Act”).

I report in respect of my examination of the Trust’s accounts carried out under section 145 of the 2011 Act and in carrying out my examination, I have followed all the applicable Directions given by the Charity Commission under section 145(5)(b) of the Act.

## **Independent examiner's statement**

I have completed my examination. I confirm that no material matters have come to my attention in connection with the examination which gives me cause to believe that in, any material respect:

- the accounts did not accord with the accounting records; or

- the accounts did not comply with the applicable requirements concerning the form and content of accounts set out in the Charities (Accounts and Reports) Regulations 2008 other than any requirement that the accounts give a ‘true and fair’ view which is not a matter considered as part of an independent examination.

I have no concerns and have come across no other matters in connection with the examination to which attention should be drawn in this report in order to enable a proper understanding of the accounts to be reached.
