The objects of the CIO are to‘’ The relief of need, for those in need by way of being a child newly diagnosed with Cancer and their families, In The Southwest Of England, through the provision of Care Packages and supporting oncology departments in the provision of Play Equipment.’’ This is done with provision of the trustees to ensure we work appropriate to help our beneficiaries. The trustees had regard to the guidelines issued by the charity commission on Children/Young people and as such the main activities undertaken by Dexter’s Odyssey are: Vouchers on diagnosis or relapse – The initial diagnosis can be a surreal moment for the family and most definitely life changing. This part of the charity has a very practical impact. We learned you never know where the next hospital admission is and financially this could be at any point which makes it hard to budget. The vouchers’ aims are to be there when you need them, for local amenities in close proximity to the hospital, so you never have to venture far.
Coffee Cake and Break – Children with childhood cancer have a lot of surgical procedures, which is a very anxious time for everyone. Parent’s would wait in their child’s room for their return families will get to a comfortable point where they feel comfortable popping out for a quick coffee and cake refuel. That’s why, as a charity, we feel vouchers* to help make these breaks possible have incredible value to a family’s mental health by being able to offer them a break from the hospital grounds for a short period.
Odyssey Entertainment pack - Children with cancer spend many days, weeks or months in hospital. Dexter’s Odyssey will have an entertainment pack* available to the families with a film-watching device and other goodies to give the family an enjoyable evening together.
Dexter’s Hamper - On the consultant’s morning rounds, families would get permission to leave the hospital for the day on ‘’Day release’’ with the promise to come back to the hospital that evening. This can put loads of pressure on the family to develop spontaneous plans for the day which can also stretch a family’s budget. Dexter’s Odyssey will supply the family with a picnic hamper* to take away the need to plan for a meal, so more time can go into planning the day out.
Coffee Afternoon - Dexter’s Odyssey have built good relationships for CLIC Sargent for two of our trustees to attend monthly coffee afternoons to help with their emotion support to parents/guardians . This also helps us speak to families directly and gauge a knowledge of what items may be beneficial for us to purchase i.e. A lot of children on the ward are barrier nursed as they have greater risk on getting an infection, so need to spend all there time in the room. One parent mentioned a soft matt would be benficial for her child to play of the bed. We got three matts initially to see how these are

received and of this we purchased more from the great feedback received.
Oncology Play Department – Quarterly we approach the CLIC play specialists at the hospital and see how they feel best a donation can be spent to best benefit the playroom. Pottery – We run pottery sessions twice a year at the hospital for inpatients and siblings to make pieces of art as a family
Oncology ward entertainment – Arranging magicians to now run virtual magic classes to the children in a safe non-covid affected environment.
Section D Achievements and performance
Dexter’s Odyssey were proud to still be able to offer our support to the Summary of the main Bristol Childrens hospital oncology department. Fundraising through the achievements of the charity charity has been more restricted since March 2020 due to COVID, but we during the year have been able to do small events since this period.
The gift vouchers have been very easy for us to produce and we know by the feedback have been greatly received by the families. We know the child’s treatment is out of our control but we hope with these to ease the financial strain for the families we support. We have been lucky enough with our funds available to be able to ask the play team what they need and be in a position to source everything they’ve needed up to now. We have collaborated with CLIC in running the monthly coffee morning, but have since January 2020 been unable to run as COVID restrictions. Dexter’s Odyssey hopes to keep adapting to ensure we can still support families

Dexter’s Odyssey operating costs for July 23 – June 24 were just under Brief statement of the charity’s £665 policy on reserves The charity have managed to run on our reserve funds as fundraising has been very limited since COVID 19. The charity has budgeted for our promises over the next, year but will still apply for grants and run limited covid safe fundraising events to help us push on and grow in the future. I report to the trustees on my examination of the accounts of the above charity (“the Trust”) for the year ended 30/06/2024.
As the charity's trustees, you are responsible for the preparation of the accounts in accordance with the requirements of the Charities Act 2011 (“the Act”).
I report in respect of my examination of the Trust’s accounts carried out under section 145 of the 2011 Act and in carrying out my examination, I have followed all the applicable Directions given by the Charity Commission under section 145(5)(b) of the Act.
