– TRUSTEES ANNUAL REPORT 1 APRIL 2020/31 MARCH 2021
This report has been produced by the three current trustees, two of whom were only in office for the final few months of the period in question and the third was not appointed until the middle of 2021. In the absence of a full account of the charity’s activities from the three Trustees who served throughout the year in question, the current Trustees are reporting as much information as is available to them.
Purpose of the Charity
Music for the Memory (MFTM) exists to provide access to a fun, free and no obligation singing programme for those living with memory issues, including the elderly, those diagnosed with dementia and their carers. Before the COVID pandemic this was achieved through live singing sessions with a lead singer and piano accompanist. Lockdown ruled out face to face sessions but the charity continued to achieve its aims by organising a weekly online singing programme via Zoom. By nature of our membership, and the difficulties some people experience with online activities, connection was lost with some, but the link to a significant proportion of the membership was maintained. The ability to change the way in which MFTM operated, in order to maintain its commitment to the community despite the Pandemic, will undoubtedly have guaranteed its survival and, thereby, its potential to flourish post Pandemic.
Funding
National Lottery Funding: Towards the end of the period, MFTM was awarded funding from the National Lottery Community Fund. The purpose of the grant was to enable the charity to continue to develop connections with people in our community. The money was allocated to two specific areas.

To help those who were either isolated, needed assistance to access online sessions or where a carer might need valuable ‘downtime’, money was made available to pay for a Personal Assistant from the local council’s accredited Support with Confidence Scheme for the duration of the singing session.

To help those who showed an interest in the weekly Zoom sessions, but had no means of accessing them, user-friendly 4G computer tablets were made available on loan.
The funding has proved invaluable and has served its purpose in helping us maintain connections with people during an exceptionally difficult time.
Other Fundraising:

Over a one week period, each Trustee sought sponsorship to walk the equivalent of the length of the South Downs, keeping close to their own homes and abiding by COVID rules .

A unique cookbook with recipes and anecdotes from MFTM members was written and produced and made available to those who made a donation, the amount of which they determined.

Personal donations and a variety of individual sponsored activities amounted to a total in excess of £4000.00.
Despite fundraising being necessarily limited by social restrictions during the Pandemic, the period ended with a healthy balance which was nearly double that reported at the end of the previous financial period.
Volunteers
Although the online singing sessions required less direct involvement from volunteers than what is required when hosting live sessions, the number and enthusiasm of those who, in a voluntary capacity, support MFTM’s work has not decreased. Particularly because MFTM is a small charity, their role in fundraising, publicity and reintroducing live sessions once restrictions are ceased will be as vital as ever.
