Trustees' Annual Report 2023-24

deaf awareness: NE was established to raise deaf awareness amongst people and communities and bring together deaf and hearing people with areas of common interest.

As of April 2023 the organisation was delivering weekly sessions mainly in-person with some option to participate online. These sessions included regular sports and health based sessions, arts and craft based sessions, a tinnitus support group, a deaf and sign social group, sign language and signed singing.

As the year progressed we established social outings and access visits that looked at the positive and not so positive experiences for deaf and hard of hearing people in community settings such as theatres and museums.

We continued the process of looking at access issues via the delivery of deaf awareness training to businesses, corporations, and some of the venues that we had previously attended for access visits.

At September 2023 we were delighted to start a National Lottery Reaching Communities programme entitled Together: Better Access, a two year project that is looking at access to services and how these might be improved for deaf and hard of hearing people.

With the start of this project we were able to secure the positions of one full time worker and two part-time workers for a two year period. The project also allowed us to connect with many more venues and organisations for collaborative work, and to include additional sessions such as healthy cookery, carpet bowls, and special events.

Under the banner of the North of Tyne Combined Authority, we successfully crowdfunded for a project to take BSL Fingerspelling into First and Primary schools across North Tyneside, Northumberland and Newcastle, concluding this with some filmed footage of the children showing their signing skills.

We are immensely grateful also to Sir James Knott Trust, Magic Little Grants, and the Co-op Local Community Fund for their financial support during this period.

Membership subscriptions and donations have again been extremely valuable in helping us to maintain the diversity and quality in service delivery that we take pride in offering.

Our social media platforms play a big part in helping to keep our members informed and connected, with regular updates on our website and positive posts appearing across our Facebook and Instagram pages.

Our members, volunteers and Board of Trustees remain key to the success of our organisation and we, once again, thank each and every person for their attendance, contribution and support throughout this financial year.

any unusual items or disclosures in the accounts, and seeking
explanations from the trustees concerning any such matters. The
