## ABOUT US 

Vale Surf Life Saving Club is a registered charity (no 1178572) established in 2017. We are a family friendly club, affiliated with SLSA Wales and Royal Life Saving Society and our aims are the promotion and provision of surf/lifesaving skills and sport for all ages and abilities. Vale SLSC offers training in water safety, rescue, coaching, resuscitation and first aid and beach and pool lifesaving activities for training, enjoyment and competitions. We also provide voluntary lifesaving and rescue services in the Vale of Glamorgan. Vale SLSC’s main beach/sea training location is at Jackson’s Bay, Barry Island and has a base at Barry Yacht Club. 

## 2024 – 2025 Summary 

2024 – 2025 was another successful year with a continued interest attracting new members of all ages and significant media interest due to the increased number of beach patrol rescues that have taken place.  We have also had a high number of members representing both Wales and GB at beach and pool competitions and competed on the national and international stage. 

We have continued our family social events as an integral part of the club’s family ethos, which also includes our annual camping training weekend which takes place every year. 

## ACHIEVEMENTS 

## MEMBERSHIP 

Current membership for the period sat at 180 members, across the nipper, junior, senior and master age groups.  We also attract university students who train and race with the club for the regional and national championships whilst experiencing pool life saving and competing at BULSCA. 

## AWARDS, COURSES & TRAINING 

During this period, we continued to ensure all our members (including coaches) are fully trained in the relevant lifesaving awards to certify safety and competency for both training and competitions.  The qualifications include: 

- Nipper beach competency 

- Lifesaver level 1 & 2 

- Ski Competency 

- National Vocation Beach Lifeguard Qualification (NVBLQ) 



This is an important part of our club activity and supports our members to both train and compete safely, but also to patrol our community beaches. In 2025 we saw a significant increase of members successfully completing awards across the various lifeguard levels, including the highest award - National Vocational Beach Lifeguard Qualification. 

## RESCUES AND FIRST AID 

The club carried out voluntary beach and water patrols at Jackson’s Bay, Barry Island during July and August.  We saw a record number of rescues at Jacksons Beach (over 30 rescue during the height of summer holidays) which attracted regional and national media interest.  Vale SLSC welcomed BBC Wales and ITV National news to film on the beach with live broadcasts on both stations on their prime time news shows.  The club chairman, club captain, coaches and club members talked about the importance of sea safety, and the invaluable role that the club are doing in providing voluntary patrols.  Jacksons Bay is not covered by the RNLI and Vale SLSC provided the voluntary cover every weekend during the summer holidays.  This is a great way to give something back to our local community and the club has used the increased number of rescues to help lobby the local council to emphasise the importance of sea safety, better messaging to beach goes as well as much needed funds for the club (charity) given the significant rise in pool and base rent costs. 

## SPORT & COMPETITION 

We saw our members across all age groups compete both at interclub level and at the Welsh National and GB championships. This was in the pool and on the beach and throughout the whole year. We also had good attendance at our local carnivals where we see our younger nippers grow in confidence and have a taste for their first friendly competitions with their friends.   In 2025, five of our members had the privilege of representing Wales at the RLSS Commonwealth Lifesaving Championships which was held in Swansea, Wales.  The championships saw athletes represent their sport at the highest level in the Commonwealth, where counties like Australia, England, Wales, Canada, Northen Ireland and Singapore were present. Our club members representing Wales came home with Welsh records, well earned medals and the honour of competing for Wales in the presence of a home crowd.. The Welsh athletes were presented with Welsh Caps in an Autumn presentation.  A number of team members also picked up Welsh caps for representing Wales in the Celtic Club organised by the SLSA Wales and SLS GB.  The club are extremely proud of all club members who either competed or were involved in managing/coaching Team Wales. 

## CHARITY STRUCTURE 



Vale SLSC, also known as Vale Surf Life Saving Club is a Charitable Incorporated  Organisation  and  consists  of  6  trustees  who  are appointed  by  agreement  of  the  other  trustees.  The  charity  is governed  by  a  constitution  and  the  current  Trustees  on  the committee -
