President’s Annual Report, 1[st] July 2020 – 30[th] June 2021
It goes without saying that it has been a year without precedent. One that we could not have predicted and one we hope we shall never have to relive.
Most of our fundraising and community events were cancelled by the pandemic restrictions, requests for support also dwindled as organisations that would normally refer people to us were unable to offer face to face advice sessions.
Whilst we were able to conduct some business via Zoom meetings they were a poor substitute for the banter and interaction of a live meeting.
Against that background it would have been easy simply to give up, but it is a tribute to the Club that it has remained buoyant and willing to do whatever activities the restrictions allowed.
The ongoing project to provide a motorised tricycle for a pupil with mobility challenges at the Prince of Wales School came to fruition with a cheque presentation and subsequent coverage of the young lad using the trike.
With the wholehearted support of Nick Rodgers and all the people involved in running Came Down Golf Club, the annual Golf Day was able to go ahead despite re-scheduling due to adverse weather. The Covid Unit at DCH was nominated as the principal beneficiary and a suitably distanced cheque was presented.
The traditional parade being banned, Remembrance Day was marked by laying a wreath on behalf of the Lions. On an overcast afternoon it was a sombre moment.
We were able to support the Dorset Echo Christmas Toy Appeal. With the inspiration of Diane and Andy Rose and the aid of some soft toys an appealing photograph was taken to replace the customary cheques presentation.
Thanks to Anita Harries’s imagination and partnership with the Prince of Wales School, Father Christmas was able to meet some local children, thus keeping the name of the Lions before the public and raising some further income. Anita’s commitment was further demonstrated when she undertook a virtual climb of Everest, raising more funds.
Some of the Lions’ signature projects were able to continue. Message in a Bottle proved especially valuable to emergency services during lockdowns and recycling spectacles resumed, both projects enjoying the willing support of the Zone Chairman Fred Broome and the Zone Secretary Lesley Chudley.
The combined skills, resources and contacts of Anita and Andy resulted in a further issue of Lions’ Tales, a newsletter which draws favourable comments for both its content and its professional image.
As we look forward to a new Lionistic year and the easing of restrictions we are able to commence planning for some of our traditional events. It is a tribute once again to the spirit of the Club that planning is already underway. Our financial position has been improved enormously by some very generous donations from a donor who wishes to withhold their identity.
In handing over to Bill Billingham who returns for a second spell as President I must thank Gordon Cordier for his meticulous minutes and all round Secretarial support; Derrick Buswell and Neil Gatehouse for their management of the finances and a seamless handover of responsibilities. Thanks and best wishes to Derrick as he becomes a Privileged Member – we look forward to continued participation from the back benches.
My thanks to all the Club members for their support and contributions through a difficult time and picking up the threads as we move out of restrictions. I know that spirit will continue with Bill at the helm.
To the incoming Officers and the members of the Club, my best wishes for our future activities and thanks for tolerating my dreadful jokes.
