## _**Parish Annual Review 2022/23**_

This of course made for a very difficult year but Trees Fewster on her first year as Churchwarden rose to the challenge and ensured that we had a Priest for 80% of the year on Sunday mornings, which enabled the congregation to receive Communion. 

We are very grateful to the retired clergy who have come along to take our services particularly Rev Ann Pollard who also came along to do our Tuesday morning services, & to Rev Bruce Carlin who has come regularly, particularly covering all the Easter Season. 

We regularly have morning prayer. 

Linda Mumford has stepped into the breach on the occasions when we have not had a Priest, Linda was Licensed as our Reader in October at Christ the King Mirfield, this was the week before we went on our Pilgrimage to Walsingham where Linda led us and pastorally looked after us. 

Sarah Taylor has started her Pastoral Ministers training and having now completed her first year she is taking the word of God to Holme House on a regular basis. Our Pastoral Team is now taking communion to the elderly and house bound, Brenda Swinton has taken over from Rev Karen with the School Go�er�or’s Role a�d thi�gs are starti�g to get �a�k to �hat is the �e� �or�al. 

Our congregation numbers has dropped unfortunately to an average of 40 plus a few children, which is approximately 60% of our pre Covid numbers. The main things is that we have a new normal, where we can look forward to our Church being open every Sunday with unlimited numbers, not having to book in for services, no one way systems, not having to keep a meter apart, no face masks, we can and have been sharing the Peace, taking communion with the wine; in addition to the bread, taking communion to the housebound, and also the congregation taking part again in the running of the service. 

We held our Advent Group in Church which was run by Linda Mumford and the Lent Group is also being held in Church and run by Ordinand Vicky Angell. Many Thanks to both. 

Traditional Church Social/Fund Raising activities have started again, these include, The Annual Church Fete, Christmas Fayre. Pancake Lunch, & our final e�e�t �as Sarah Taylors �Ne� to You� �lothes sale. 



Two regular events occur each week in Church, on Mondays we have a Knit and Natter group, on Thursdays we have a keep fit class, both meet weekly. We have an active Mothers Union who meet monthly. 

The Childrens services, Tots Praise and Christingle Service (2) both started up agai� i� �0��, also the �hildre�’s A�ti�ity Mor�i�gs, Easter, a�d Ad�e�t i� Church. 

A tea� of 5 �e�t i�to the lo�al Chur�h S�hool, Go�ersal St Mary’s Pri�ary, recently to mark the beginning of lent by producing the ash from palm crosses, Ashing year 6 who then went on to ash All the school. The Church also went into School to support pause for Easter Day where we planted bulbs with the children to signify new life and made Jewelled Easter Crosses. The whole School (200) have recently been to Church for their Easter Service, organised and run by year 4. A team of ladies have been attending School each week to do knitting with the children. 

Christian Aid week and the Christian Aid Earthquake appeal for Turkey and Syria have been held, both raising much welcome funds for these two important charities. 

A big Thanks to all our ladies who helped in whatever way with these events. 

The electoral roll numbers for this year have dropped to 103, however our maximum number of elected laity members on the PCC stops at 9. 

Finally, we cannot forget our elderly members who have passed away these past 12 months, Audrey Pinder, Christina Clake, Marlene Senior, Vera Wilson, and our organist Arwel Price, God Bless them all, may they RIP & Rise in Glory. 

Finally, we welcomed Rev Karen to a Social in Church on the afternoon of the 10[th of] Mar�h, �here �oth St Mary’s & St Paul’s prese�ted Kare� �ith gifts a�d expressed Many Thanks for all she has done and meant to both our Churches, wishing Rev Karen a long and Healthy Retirement. 

We now have a vacancy for a new Priest and two members of the PCC have been given the task of producing a Parish Profile, which has gone out to the PCC for approval, after which both members will continue with the Parish Brochure for sending out to advertise for our new Priest.

## **Background** 

St Mary’s Parish Church Council is responsible for co-operating with the Vicar, the Rev Karen Nicholl who they have worked very closely with, including the Church Wardens, they have promoted in the Parish the whole mission of the Church, pastoral, evangelistic, social, and ecumenical. The PCC also have maintenance responsibilities for the Church and its Churchyard. 

## **Membership of the PCC.** 

Members of the PCC are either ex-officio or elected by the Annual Parochial Church Meeting (APCM) in accordance with the Church Representation Rules, elected members serve for 3 years, also Deanery Synod Members serve for 3 years. Wardens and Deanery Synod members serve on the PCC as ex-officio. Rev Karen’s position in the Church changed from Priest in Charge to Vicar, this took place on the 20[th of] September 2015.

The PCC have met 5 times during 2022 and twice during 2023. The standing committee have  met twice. A big thanks to all the members of the PCC for all work done at St Mary’s during this period. 

5 members have completed their term of office and grateful thanks are given to France Wilkinson, Helen Nicholl, Susie Proctor, Gillian Greaves, & Jeanette Vaines, a big thanks to each person for their time and commitment to the PCC, they are all eligible for re-election. 

Additionally, Paul Wilkinson Churchwarden has completed a 10-year term of office and Trees Fewster Churchwarden has completed a one-year term of office. 1 new Churchwardens is required for 2023/4. 

A special extraordinary Vestry Meeting was held on 22cnd May 2022 in order to elect the Churchwardens, no elections were made at the APCM on the 1[st of] May. The six-year rule was revoked at the meeting on the 22cnd May which allowed Paul Wilkinson to stand again and make up the necessary number to 2 wardens following the approval of Trees Fewster as Churchwarden. 

During this past year we have been without our Vicar Rev Karen Nicholl who has been on sick leave all year and has retired 31[st] January 2023 due to her health. Due to Karen’s illness Paul Wilkinson has taken over the role of Chair. 



Also, we have had to find a Priest each week to take our Parish Eucharist, and a big thanks to Trees Fewster Churchwarden for carrying out this task. 

The electoral roll numbers during 2022/23 have dropped down to 103 from 106, this doesn’t affect the maximum number of elected members of the laity which can be elected to the PCC, we are allowed 9 elected members of the Laity in accordance with the Church Representation Rules Part 9 M15 (8) (b). Since 5 members have completed their term of office, 5 newly elected members are required. 

The PCC has approved the setting up of a Trustee Group of 3 PCC members to deal with serious safeguarding incidents reported to PSO (Parish Safeguarding Officer). This was set up in July 2019 and 'Template A : Safeguarding Incidents' was forwarded to Gail O'Neill at the Diocesan Office on 22/07/2016. All safeguarding issues are sent directly to the Diocese Safeguarding Officer, the Parish Dashboard keeps us updated with safeguarding document approval and is minuted at PCC meetings, and safeguarding is an agenda item at every PCC meeting. The church website gives details of how to contact the PSO as does the Safeguarding noticeboard in the church porch.

## **Church Fabric Report, 2022/23.** 

All preventative maintenance work has been carried out; this includes the following services: 

Boiler, Fire Extinguishers + Fire Blanket, Lightening Conductor, Church Clock, Church Internal and Roof Alarms, PAT test on Electrical items. 

The following documents have been reviewed & updated where necessary: 

Fire Safety Risk assessment, Fire Procedures, H&S Policy, Church Inventory. 

The major building work required is the South Porch Roof and guttering sealing requirement and the North Aisle wall 



replastering. The grant applied for recently was not sufficient to enable these two projects to be carried out. 

Churchwardens

## **- Safeguarding Report January December 2022** 

Safeguarding is an item on every PCC meeting agenda. The Parish continues to comply with Parish Dashboard requirements which in line with national and local policies ensures policy is put into action and reviewed regularly. We are currently working towards level 3 - Safer Practices. As we no longer have an incumbent some sections will need advice from the Archdeacon before completion. 

During the year, four DBS checks have been completed. Linda Mumford has been approved by the diocese to administer DBS checks in addition to myself. 

There has again been an increase in training.  Members of the PCC have completed online training on ‘Domestic Abuse’. New members have also completed ‘Safer Awareness’ and ‘Safeguarding Foundations’ online courses. The Parish Dashboard serves to ensure that children’s activities have PCC authorisation, risk assessment and relevant insurance. Helpers are given a volunteer contract to explain their role and given details of a contact for support should they need it. This has enabled highly successful Children’s events at Christmas and Easter. 

In March with PCC approval the parish requested information on becoming a ‘Dementia Friend’. We look forward to learning how we might learn to make our church more dementia friendly. Finally, I would like to thank all volunteers and PCC members who have given of their time to complete the necessary safeguarding training which has allowed us to welcome children and adults safely into our church. ## **Electoral Roll report** 

From the last count in April 2022 the present number of people elected to vote on the electoral roll has decreased from 106 to 104. 



5 members have sadly passed away. 

3 members have been added. There are: 83 female members 

- 21 male members 

All previous records have been destroyed.

## **Deanery Synod report** 

Joyce, Linda and myself have been to 2 meetings over the last year. 

The first was held at St Peter’s Birstall and we had a guest speaker who was able to tell us all about the work that goes on in Mara. The speaker gave examples of the work going on around Female Genital mutilation and how this affected woman and children. She was able to show us how the money sent from our Diocese was being used to educate women and girls and support them through a "safe house". 

Our Second meeting was held at St James church Scholes. Our Guest speaker was Archdeacon Bill Braviner. He gave a very interesting speech on the background of how he had got to where he is today. He focused on the struggles the Church of England has getting Priests to stay in the North after training and said he was trying to persuade people to look at relocating to Yorkshire a beautiful rural area. He was also looking forward to being able to do the job he was employed to do and be able to support churches without priests to move forward once the new Bishop of Huddersfield is settled in. He understood the frustration we are all experiencing and that times are difficult for local churches at this time of uncertainty.

## **Lay Pastoral Ministry** 

Brenda continues taking Home Communion to people in the parish. 

She does do some visiting for people in their homes and is always available should anyone need to talk or for prayer. 



Brenda is a Foundation Governor and is very much involved with school. 

Sarah is visiting Holme House for communion, prayer and conducts a service. 

Sarah is currently training as a Spiritual Care volunteer at Kirkwood, training to be completed by June, will visit in-patients on a one to one basis offering spiritual care to patients, family and staff.

## **OTHER REPORTS IN THE LIFE OF THE CHURCH** 

## **Gomersal St Mary's School** 

We certainly believe the connection between church and school is good and strong. Ruth and I are involved in and invited to attend Worship at school. 

The whole school attend church for their children led services on most feast and festival events with members of our church opening with prayer and closing with a blessing. 

The children from nursery visit church for Tots Praise fortnightly where they hear a story and have an activity then of course juice and biscuits all this is led by Frances and Paul. 

We have burnt Palm crosses with children then "ashed" them on ash Wednesday. 

We have planted bulbs and made lolly pop crosses at Easter for "New Life" 

I judged the Easter Egg competition. 

Ruth attends school for "reading friends" if you get chance to speak to Ruth she definitely has some lovely little tales to tell about the things the children say. 

It is definitely a special relationship we share with school.

## **Children’s Activity Mornings 2022** 

The first children’s activity morning following Covid outbreak was Easter 2022. It was good to welcome families back into our church. Ably supported by our activity event team, which is fantastic that over 20 parishioners have trained and are involved in this ministry. It wouldn’t take place without this commitment. A big thanks to everyone. 

Much of the craft activity was already prepared due to Covid breaking out just before 2020 Easter. It was a real blessing to meet and greet the people of Gomersal again. Some regulars, others new to the event. There is no charge for the morning, in the hope we reach as many children as possible. There is an optional donation box for those families who wish to donate towards the craft etc. Over 50 children attended with their parents. 

We had 18 families attend the Advent activity preparation for Christmas, which was far less than usual. However, we did discover that there was an outbreak of illness which lasted about a month and affected concerts and Christingle services, as children were ill and missing from their parts in nativities etc. 

An upside to this dilemma was, quality time was spent at activities, with the children really engaging with the adults. They had time and space to comfortably enjoy making what was on offer. From Christmas wreaths and mangers to biscuit decorating and Angel display on the Children’s activity Board. Not forgetting the refreshment area.

## **Tots Praise** 

At the request of Gomersal St Mary’s Primary school Tots, praise re-opened September 2022 following the 2year Coved 19 lockdown and restrictions. It was wonderful to hear the restrains of “Early Birds”, “If your happy and you know it” and “Jesus’ love is very wonderful” again sung with enthusiasm. 

This was Tots praise with a difference however, it took place in school for nursery and reception children and was once a month with Paul, Brenda, and me. It was much valued, but space was 



limited, and the non-surroundings of the Church retracted from full benefit of the service. 

Stepping Stones Nursery, enquired about Tots Praise when they visited at Christmas for their concert and were keen to attend as before. 

Tots Praise have now returned to meeting at Church where we have an enthusiastic and dedicated team of 9 volunteers available for the return of fortnightly services which started again on the 25[th of] January 2023. 

2 team members support St Mary’s school by helping to escort the children to and from church. Two families from the community also attended, and Steppingstones Nursery. The first session was attended by 46 children, to which we thank God that we were able to supply enough craft materials and BISCUITS, which the children always include in their prayer of thanks to finish. Numbers have settled at approximately 25 children which is far more manageable and provides a better experience for the children attending. 

The children are at home in “their” church, their bright and happy faces are a joy to see, they are becoming confident in: - singing, prayer, taking part in story time and love the craft activities, which enable them to retell the story they have heard during the service to others. Don’t ever under estimate their young years, they can see simply how it is and ask very difficult, pertinent questions. Keeps us on our toes.

## **Mother’s Union** 

Our Mothers Union branch is at present run by a 6-strong committee as there is no branch leader. This has worked very well over the last year and continues with an amicable and efficient group of people. No one individual is burdened with responsibilities as all tasks are shared. 

The group has sadly lost members who have died over the last couple of years, but this year we are delighted to report that we have attracted 4 new members. 

Following the cessation of the group during covid we have now managed over the last 12 months to hold branch meetings every 



month, with interesting speakers and activities. The now annual MU lunch attracted 18 guests, both members and non-members. We continue to fund raise for the Mothers Union, and also raise money for church funds too. The highlight of this years fundraising activity was our very successful Afternoon Tea. This raised over £800 for church funds. Our monthly raffle keeps a steady small income for the group, and this year we were left a legacy from the now defunct lunch club, enabling us to donate over £600 to the MU “Summer of Hope” fund. Our “Make a Mothers Day” fund raised £200 for MU, not just from the group, but from the wider church congregation too. A very generous and worthwhile cause, remembering our mothers or someone who has been like a mother to you. 

Several of our branch members have in the past attended the wider MU Area gatherings, held each quarter. An interesting way to meet new people and also learn much more about the work of the MU in the Huddersfield Episcopal area. We have been invited to attend the summer gathering at St John’s in Rastrick in June, as host branch. We will provide cakes and serve refreshments to the meeting. This task is shared by a different branch each quarter. As the meeting falls on the same day, we are taking members to this event instead of holding a meeting at St Mary’s. 

So, on entering my second year as branch secretary, I can honestly say that the group is buoyant and very well supported.

## **The Children’s Society** 

The people of St Mary’s Parish have once again been generous with their donations to the Children’s Society during 2022. The total for the Children’s Society Collection Boxes for 2022 £179.72 

This will go towards valuable work of the Childrens Society.  The Christingle Services raised £286.73 unfortunately the Christingle candles were not distributed this year as we were   just trying to get back to normal hopefully next year will be in a better position.  We would like to thank you once again for all your donations. The Children’s Society does an enormous amount for 



children who desperately need help and whose lives are in danger of being irreparable damaged.  It is by generous donations such as these from St Marys that this kind of help can continue. Joyce Jackson 

## **Social committee** 

Following coming out of lockdown the only social events in 2022 were the Fete in June and the Christmas Fayre. The proceeds of which were donated to church funds.

express an audit opinion on the view given by the accounts.

Outlook
I would once again like to say a very big thank you for the generosity of everyone involved with St
Mary's Parish Churcl whether it is for the fund raising, donations or the giving. The common fijnd for
2023 has unfortunately increased once again hopefully as in wevious years we can manage to pay at le4St
£25,OQO of the £41,821 amount due. Once aga5n 2023 will be a very diificult year &8 the next phase of the
