## 11 **Annual Review**

Paul Wilkinson wrote the annual review.

2020/21 has been a difficult year for everyone, after the outbreak at the early part of the year with Covid 19, which very quickly turned into a Pandemic.

This effected all aspects of our life as we tried to come to terms with Lockdowns and all the restrictions which this placed upon everyone. our Church life changed as we started to meet through Zoom or U Tube, via the internet. This for many has been difficult since not everyone has access to the internet.

In order for the Church to be reopened when allowed to, the Church layout was changed in order to socially distance in accordance with Government guidelines and to ensure a one-way system. Risk Assessments were done by Rev Karen.

Here at St Mary’s, we have been extremely fortunate in our Priest Rev Karen, her Husband Kevin and our 2 Trainee Readers, Caroline & Linda. Kevin has been instrumental in setting up all the Tech to allow the congregation to safely take part in the Eucharist Services, which is also streamed for people who cannot attend Church.

Rev Karen who has responsibility for two Churches has ensured that we have Eucharist Services when we are allowed to, daily Psalm at Six & Daily Compline with the help of our Trainee Readers.

There have been weekly services- “Worship at Home” run by the congregation; at Noon on a Sunday on Zoom using the Time to Pray Service, which has proved a Tonic for many people. Additionally, on Tuesdays at One, on Zoom, we have “Cuppa and a Chat.”

Easter Services were done via Zoom and were available to both Churches.

They consisted of:

The 6-week Diocesan Lent Course “The Rhythm of Life” this was well attended by members from both St Paul’s, & St Mary’s and proved very thought provoking, enlightening and enjoyable. Holy Week Reflections: Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday

Maundy Thursday. Finished with watch of Prayer in Church. Good Friday Stations of the Cross, with members from both Churches taking a station each.

Holy Saturday: this was run by the Children’s Jonas Club. Also Psalm at Six with reflection.

Easter Day – in Church, this was streamed and online on the day. A BIG Thankyou Rev Karen for these Services.

Thank you to our two Churchwardens who in turn have been in Church every week during this past 12 months to look after the fabric of our Church, and especially to John for organizing the stewarding of our Church during the Eucharist Services.

There are other people who have contributed to the life of our Church, the PCC have met when necessary, Jennifer has looked after Safeguarding, Joyce has looked after the Finances and kept them in safe hands, Trees has helped with the Finances and looked after communications ensuring that the congregation are kept informed of what is happening, Helen who has looked after the Secretariat, Peter who has looked after the envelope giving, Jean our Verger, David for his work with the Inland Revenue, Brenda & Linda who Pastorally have kept in touch with people, Arwel our Organist, Frances and her team of Sunday Club Teachers , Caroline and her team of Jonah Club helpers, and all the people who have acted as stewards during the Eucharist services which we have held.

I do know there are many of you who have thought, prayed, and looked out for each other – THANKYOU.

I think the above shows what a strong Church we are, and that we can look forward to some sort of normality with confidence. Paul Wilkinson

Churchwarden & PCC Vice Chair

## 12 **An Other Business y**

Peter Yates and Vicky Angell thanked everyone, especially the church wardens, for looking after everyone.

Paul Wilkinson wanted to highlight all the hard work the Rev. Karen has done over this time and asked to keep her in their prayers as she recovers her health.

John Tanner thanked everyone for coming to church over this time and thanked everyone that has helped.

The PCC have met 5 times during 2021 and twice during 2022. The standing committee have not met. A big thanks to all the members of the PCC for all work done at St Mary’s during this period.

2 members have completed their term of office and grateful thanks are given to Ruth Fretwell, and Sarah Jones for their time and commitment to the PCC, they are both eligible for re-election. Sadly, Caroline passed away on the 11[th] May 2021.

Additionally, Paul Wilkinson Churchwarden has completed a 9-year term of office and John Tanner Churchwarden resigned December 2021 after a 3-year term of office. 2 new Churchwardens are required.

## **Annual review**

2021/22 has been another difficult year for everyone, after the Covid 19 outbreak and the lockdowns we have had to go through since 2020.

Our congregation has been reduced by approximately 50% since the outbreak and our Parish Priest Rev Karen has been on sick leave + sabbatical during this period.

We are now back to what is probably the new normal with most of the restrictions removed. Starting at the back end of 2020 and early 2021 things started to change gradually, during 2021 the one-way system went, we were allowed to sing, face masks were not mandatory, we could shake hands during the peace, there was no limit on numbers, and tea and biscuits were being served after the service.

We have been fortunate in having Rev Mike Green, Assistant Curate from Brownhill, who has been taking services during the time whilst Rev Karen was off.

Grateful Thanks to Jean Holmes Verger, who came back as Assistant Church Warden to step into John Tanners shoes December 2021.

The Church booked pilgrimages to Holy Island and Walsingham during 2021, these were sadly cancelled. The Walsingham weekend has been moved forward to 2022.

Paul Wilkinson, Vice Chair, On behalf of the PCC. May 2022

## **Electoral Roll Report**

From the last count in 2021 the present number of people elected to vote on the electoral roll has decreased from 108 to 106.

3 members have passed away.

1 member has been added. There are:

84 female members and 22 male.

All previous records have been destroyed.

Anna Clapham, electoral role officer

## **Fabric report**

The Church Terrier and Inventory have been updated.

The Fire Alarm Risk Assessment Document has been updated. The Health & Safety Document has been updated.

All preventative Maintenance has been carried out.

Boiler, and a gas safety certificate obtained, fire extinguishers, church security system, roof alarm, Church Clock, lightening conductor, & PAT testing of all the electrical items.

The Stone Archway gate and the boundary wall on the Shirley Roadside of the Church has been repaired. This has been done by Brick-Tie and organised through Kirklees Councill.

The north aisle roof, gutters and downpipes have all been repaired and 2 north bays nearest to the Tower have been repointed using lime mortar. The internal walls are drying out, which will require re plastering and painting when fully dry.

The work to replace the window covering has been completed.

The work is still required doing on the Porch Roof which is leaking and has contributed to the Distortion of the Porch entrance doors. The faculty has been put through by the Diocese and we are awaiting results of grant applications. Further replastering and painting work will be required when this has been completed and fully dried out.

The conversion of all the battery-operated smoke alarms in the church to mains operated through the Hall & Rhodes Security Alarm System has not yet been done, this will ensure that if the smoke alarms are activated it will set off the Security alarms in Church, which will provide a safer more reliable system.

The Music/Video and Lottery Licenses have all been renewed

Paul Wilkinson

## **- Safeguarding Report January December 2021**

During the year 3 DBS checks have been completed. There has been an enormous increase in training completed by volunteers to facilitate the children’s Advent Activity Day and by PCC members to comply with the requirements of the Parish Dashboard. This is an on-line facility which allows the parish to keep a check on safeguarding requirements and to up-date them as necessary. The PCC has approved a policy on recruitment of ex-offenders and a procedure to deal with safeguarding concerns or allegations.

DBS checks now need to be completed every 3 years instead of 5 years. All will need to updated by end of 2022. Training also has to be renewed every three years.

Finally, I would like to thank all volunteers and PCC members who have given of their time to complete the necessary safeguarding training which has allowed us to welcome children safely into our church.

Jennifer Hoyle April 2022

## **Birstall Deanery Synod**

This year is its 150th anniversary.

He further informed the meeting that the Revd Simon Cash had stepped back so Canon Mark and himself had taken over his work as Interim Area Deans up to the end of the year when new Licenses will be granted.

## **The Children’s Society**

The people of St Mary’s Parish have once again been generous with their donations to the Children’s Society during 2021.

The total for the Children’s Society Collection Boxes for 2021 £243.61which will go towards valuable work of the Children’s Society Unfortunately the Christingle Services did not take part again in 2021 which also meant the Christingle candles were not distributed in the church. We would like to thank you once again for all your donations. The Children’s Society does an enormous amount for children who desperately need help and whose lives are in danger of being irreparable damaged. It is by generous donations such as these from St Mary’s that this kind of help can continue. Joyce Jackson/Marlene Senior
