In December 2020, we organised and co-
directed a recording of ‘Voices’, one of four
interludes from Frank Denyer’s large-scale
work,_Melodies_. The recording will appear
on a double CD to be released by Another
Timbre records. This furthered our unique
relationship with Denyer – the latest in a 5-
year thread of collaborations.
As he approaches 80, the composer is
recording many of his works, altogether
making a retrospective collection to
document his 50-year career. Octandre is
nowadays a principal exponent, worldwide,
of this repertoire. The recordings we have
made in Denyer’s presence will establish
performance traditions for this unique
music, which often features instruments
from different cultures, or newly invented
ones. Also, as in the case of ‘Voices’, often
it explores original means of notation,
generating new perspectives on
performance.
In addition to helping Denyer complete this
project, this activity aids beneficiaries in
creating authentic, commercially available
recordings of this rare music. This will
maintain and further the contemporary-
music public’s appreciation and knowledge,
both in Britain and further afield.
Notably, for this recording, we hired three
young musicians (recent graduates), for
whom this professional experience was
arguably educational, and further, gave
them first-hand knowledge of Denyer’s
music. It is our hope that this will inspire
them to wish to find out more about this
repertoire, potentially to include it in their
own performances, or to assimilate its
influence in their compositions, and to help
disseminate it amongst their peers.|
