## **CHAIR OF THE TRUSTEES REPORT 2019-2020**

## **ELSPETH DICKINS F.S.S.F.**

“The Society of Shoe Fitters has seen this last year as an extremely challenging one.

We have many members who are independent shoe retailers who have been working extremely hard to retain their businesses in a price competitive market of large chain, supermarket, and internet retailers. The Society of Shoe Fitters key objective is to ensure the public are wearing comfortable footwear that will not damage their feet, and we can only ensure this if we train retail assistants and health professionals in footwear fitting. We also advise our members in attracting and retaining customer retention to be part of their USP in an extremely price competitive market.

Sadly, we have seen many of our members close their businesses due to the perceived cost of footwear. With imports from the Far East being so much cheaper (and inferior), educating the general public on the benefits of quality, fitted footwear is another of our key objectives that we have been focussing on this year. We have been sharing our expertise through educational flyers, newsletters as well as through social media channels.

Without independent retailers offering a fitting service, the public will be forced to buy self-service without realising the damage they might be doing to their physiology, particularly children’s feet that are soft and vulnerable. It also means that our income diminishes to the point that we can no longer maintain the last and only professional shoe fitting resource and information service.

I would like to thank the Trustees for their input over the past 12 months, and I would especially like to thank our Secretary for her tireless work in running the Society and her endless commitment ensuring that our members and the general public have all the relevant and up to date information to make informed decisions.

With the approach of Brexit, we are entering uncharted waters and we will be facing further challenges in the next 12 months. However, I am confident that with the knowledge and experience of our secretary and trustees, we will continue to support our members in the ensuing years”.
