## **ISLE ACCESS – CHAMPIONING ACCESS FOR ALL** 

The Trustees present their report and the financial statements of the charity for the period 1[st] May 2019 to 30th April 2020. 

## **Objectives and Activities** 

1. Equality and Diversity: To relieve disability by providing specialist advice, equipment or access for disabled people, families and carers living in or visiting the Isle of Wight. 

2. Carers: To preserve and protect the health of those caring for people with physical, mental, sensory or cognitive impairment within the family or home on the Isle of Wight. 

3. Employment: To provide employment, supported work experience and volunteering opportunities for those residents on the Isle of Wight who are excluded from or have difficulty accessing those opportunities by reason of their disability, age or infirmity. 

4. Recreation: To promote and provide specialist recreational and exercise facilities for the benefit of the inhabitants of or those visiting the Isle of Wight who have need of such facilities by virtue of their age, disability or infirmity in the interests of social welfare and wellbeing and with the object of improving their conditions of life and those of their families and carers. 

5. Work with local businesses, organisations, and tourist venues to help, advise, lobby and encourage to be more accessible to IW residents and visitors and, to embrace and develop the cause of accessibility for all. 

The trustees have applied to the Charity Commission to rewrite these Objectives into clearer language. 

## **Structure, governance and management** 

The charity was established as a Charitable Incorporated Organisation (CIO) on 15th May 2018. It is governed by the trustees in accordance with the Constitution. The values behind the Constitution are to be inclusive, collaborative and transparent. 

## **Recruitment and appointment of new trustees** 

Trustees are appointed in accordance with the Constitution. Skills are drawn from a mix of personal and professional backgrounds including marketing, public relations, education, health services, mental health and disability. All the trustees are Isle of Wight based and all have been DBS checked. **Organisational structure** 

The charity trustees meet at a minimum of four times per year, with trustees on sub-committees meeting a further four times a year. The Chairman, Vice Chairman, Secretary and Treasurer are elected from their number. 

## **Induction and training of new trustees** 

All new trustees receive a copy of the Constitution and undertake a DBS check. Charity Commission publications for trustees are made available as appropriate. 

## **Public benefit statement** 

In setting the charity’s objectives and in establishing the charity and running it’s activities, trustees have considered the Charity Commission’s general guidance on public benefit. **Risk** 

The trustees have assessed the major risks to which the charity is exposed, in particular those related to the operation and finances of the charity, and are satisfied that policies and systems are in place to mitigate any exposure to the major risks associated with seeking and obtaining funds. Budgets are set annually and monitored by the trustees.

As all charltles have found, 2020-21 has been a really ch4llengingyear, with most of it spent
in lockdown. It has had a negative effett on our Provision of oui adapted Cycling proiecL as
well as ourfvvdraisingand eamed Income.
Most of our adapted wlists are classed as vulnerable 50 were carefully Isolatin& We use a
5POrts centre io delwerour cycling event5 allo thi5 was one of the last categories to reopen.
However. the effect of isolatin8 and the lack of exerclse clearly affected some of the cyclr5ts
afid theyfound st drffi¢ult to cope with. We have just restarted delfjvering the sessions a8aln
using Strtct Covid secure measures.
It Is duri*8 tiine5 like thls that we find reports such as this one, written by a parent of one of
ourcycli5ts, so upliftin8 and rerninds us of the irnpart we're havlng..

had neveT ridden a btke befo￿ when we took him along to the first Isle Acce5Strial
blke sesslon. It was one of the rsghts of passage l alway5 thought as parents we
would see. and as keen cydists ourselves we were looking forward to famify bike
rldes tO8ether. However. Matthew never had the abilityto ride a tradttional bike.

We selected the Vanraam iaTrdem madel that was avallable at the sesslon as It
%bvuld allow two rider5, glvin8one rider the steerfjng control. As it Is a trike. It
remalns stable whlch was key as Matthew Is now mLKh the same sSze as us and we
needed to ensure balance. On this blke you can choose to have one rider pedalllng
or both, 50 If one rider lack5 the abllity to pedal. theycan ￿411 enjoythe rlde. To our
amazement Matthewgot the Idea of pedallingvery quickly and we were doing laps
around the court In r40 tlmel Forthe first tlme our 50n was rldln8 a bikel It was
elating.
This bike was on loan to Isle Access for the session frorn a 5imilarBroup in the New
Forest. l offered to helpjan and the team atlsle kcess with the project as I was so
inspired and wanted to help other indfvldu&15 have the opportunityto rlde a bike
who may never had the opportunity before.
At the second sessh)n we attended Matthew made a beeline forthe Same b¢ke,
ttchlngto get movin81 The bike 15 extremely popular with attendees and there is
often a wait to use it. Anotheryovng man called Callum who has leamin8 disabllr(ie5
had been riding the bike for sometiffje on his own so we asked him if he wotsld mind
Matthew joining him. So. we stood back and literally watthed indepeTrdence in
action- two young men with #ddittonal need5 ridinB a triketO8ether. reguirin8
teawTrwork. CO￿rdInation and pedal power. Callum had the ability to steer. so
together. by hawn8 the ac¢es5ible equiprnent, they could be independent in theor

As parents of special needschildren, e¥eTr Into adulthood, you need to step in and
support them wtth most. if not all. actl¥itiÈs. To be able to stand back and watch the
two of them in actksn was an imfflen5ely powerful and emotlonal experience. It was
moTe than just ridin8 a blke.. It was teafflwork, indePender￿e and funl
Fw me as Matthew's mum, thi5 proiect really has enabled. offered independence
and given access. When people are given the right equipment and opportunttie5 50
rnuth is possible.
Thanks to a match fundin8 grant from Slmpty Health. we were able to purchase thetsndem
bike Matthew used. AnothÈrwelcomed grant from Erterg￿e Me allowed usto buy extra
helmets to help reiluce cr055 iThfectlon.
We are all hopingthat the next yearwill 8et us back on our feet agaln andthat we can
continueto grow the chaTtty.
Our support for businesses and local or8anisations has begun #galn. We contlnue to offet
advice on access and Inclusion, in order to fund our other actlvliles.
