THE TRISTAN VOORSPUY CONSERVATION TRUST TRUSTEES ANNUAL REPORT
FOR THE YEAR ENDED 30TH SEPTEMBER 2024
Strategies for achieving objectives
The Tristan Voorspuy Conservation Trust (TVCT) is a fund donating charity set up in memory of Tristan to continue his philanthropic legacy in protecting Kenya’s wildlife. Our mission is to break the cycle of poverty, and in doing so reduce the mounting pressure on Kenya’s last remaining untouched wildlife and its habitat so that future generations can enjoy the flora and fauna of Kenya.
We truly believe the key to combatting the ever-increasing pressure on the land is through education, family planning and providing basic healthcare and services. In turn this will help to improve the quality of life of those living in more remote areas, helping them to escape poverty and both encouraging and enabling them to live a more sustainable lifestyle. In our eyes this approach is the most constructive and effective long-term method to safeguard Kenya’s beautiful and untouched landscapes, shared by people and wildlife alike.
Since the launch of the TVCT in 2018, we have carefully selected and successfully supported various projects across Kenya, primarily partnering with CHASE Africa (Community Health and Sustainable Environment), an organization with years of experience working with other partners across Kenya. CHASE shares our mission to reduce the pressure on the land and to break the vicious circle of poverty within some of the most remote communities of Kenya.
By concentrating our resources and collaborating with partners who already have all the right facilities and infrastructure in place we aim to maximise our impact, particularly on mothers, children, the family, the community and crucially the environment. Empowering women and girls to choose how many children they have, and the intervals between pregnancies, not only reduces instances of maternal and infant illness and mortality, but helps girls to complete their education, thrive and prosper and contribute to society.
Further to this, in November 2023, the TVCT accepted a grant request from For Rangers (through Save the Rhino) for £20,475 to equip rangers in the Mugie, Sosian, Ol Maisor and Suyian area of Laikipia, Kenya. The teams consisted of both armed and unarmed rangers; the un-armed teams are the ears and eyes on the ground, and are stationed throughout the Conservancies. They monitor specific blocks during the day to locate threats to the Conservancies and communicate the same to a centralised location. The armed teams act as the proactive and reaction teams of the conservancies. Their operations are independent of the unarmed teams. However, their daily deployments are based on information relayed back from unarmed teams and other information gathering systems. The teams need to be kitted out with the right equipment including firearms (where appropriate), uniforms, boots, binoculars, digital communication handheld radios and chargers and the TVCT were happy to help towards the cost of equipment.
Activities undertaken to achieve objectives
Carol Service – December 2023 – St Patrick’s, Soho Square – proceeds were split with St Patrick’s homeless charity.
Gaucho Derby – February 2024 – Endurance horse race in Patagonia – Imogen Voorspuy and Issy Fitzalan Howard entered and completed the race (at their own expense) to raise money for the TVCT.

Main activities undertaken to further the Charity’s purposes for the public benefit
CHASE Africa – The Big Give: Once again we supported CHASE in the final hours of the Big Give, enabling them to make their targets, meanwhile doubling our donation. The proceeds are discretionary for CHASE to spend on their charitable objectives, which align with our own, especially as CHASE is very good at placing great emphasis on building a strong relationship with each of our local partners. CHASE are also able to map and measure their organisational effectiveness and develop a clear vision and action plan.
The TVCT aids CHASE in funding the following partnership projects:
Kalyet Afya Foundation (KAF):
KAF started a youth programme in local schools and continued well-attended outreach clinics in 2022. The projects aim to empower marginalised rural communities, particularly women and girls, to realise SRHR, access family planning and healthcare services. The TVCT supported the ‘Uzazi’ Bora project meaning ‘Best Reproduction’. KAF worked through its integrated healthcare model, bringing on and training 24 Community Health Volunteers (CHVs) and 7 new Peer Educators (PEs) as well as organising mobile clinics and Back Pack Nurse services (BPNs).
This project did not reach its target of 48,270 attendees to the clinics, however reached 46,831 people, which is a huge sum of people. Visiting an average of 3 households per day, 4 days a week KAF were able to deliver 13,621 visits as well as 36 BPNs.
The key successes during the period were:
-
The Backpack nursing model targeting women of reproductive age with family planning and cancer screening services has become a safe and interactive forum for women to openly discuss SRH issues, ask questions and share experiences while waiting to receive the services. The platform has also resulted to increased number of women and girls using family planning services because they feel the environment is safe for them to access the services.
-
Through house to house visits, KAF is making efforts to ensure people with disabilities receive SRH information and services needed enforcing the commitment to “Leave no one behind” in healthcare accessibility.
-
KAF has successfully established a strong partnership with the Ministry of Health, Ministry of Education, Religious leaders and other stakeholders in the community. These stakeholders have been instrumental in supporting our activities through provision of locum health workers, sites for mobile clinics and mobilization of community members.
-
More teachers are participating in the peer sessions and are ready to help the learners in their areas need.
The TVCT is happy with the results and continues to support KAF, through CHASE Africa.
THE TRISTAN VOORSPUY CONSERVATION TRUST TRUSTEES ANNUAL REPORT - CONTINUED FOR THE YEAR ENDED 30TH SEPTEMBER 2024
The Maa Trust (TMT):
The TVCT supported TMT once more, with their Integrated Community Healthcare Project (ICHP) based in the Masai Mara.
TMT reached a total of 1688 community members, 39% of the targeted population. 907 women were reached by CHWs and CHPs. A total of 1421 women received different forms of family planning services, and 1420 teenage boys and girls were reached with the in-school education activities.
The key successes during the period were:
-
Increased Reach in A/SRHR Awareness: A 49% increase in the number of people reached with information and awareness on adolescent and sexual reproductive health and rights (A/SRHR).
-
Growth in SRH Service Uptake: A 45% increase in the number of people accessing sexual and reproductive health (SRH) services.
-
Youth and Adolescent Engagement: A remarkable 114% increase in the number of adolescents and youths reached with A/SRHR information.
-
Operationalization of Talek MNCH: The facility became operational, serving 425 women and girls. Notably, 57% of the women who delivered were young mothers under 24 years old.
-
General Health Service Uptake: A 15% increase in the uptake of general health services compared to 2023.
-
Healthcare Training: Trained 22 clinicians and nurses on A/SRHR
For Rangers:
ForRangers requested £20,475 to fully equip the rangers on these Conservancies with good quality boots so they could safely and effectively provide frontline security. The goal was simply to enhance the security of these Conservancies by improving rangers’ welfare through the provision of the best possible boots (Altberg) for them to do their job in relative comfort.
Objectives:
-
Equip rangers with durable, high-performance boots to improve comfort and reduce fatigue.
-
Support the welfare and morale of rangers working under challenging conditions. 2. Project progress report
The grant was originally proposed to procure and distribute 105 pairs of Altberg Microlite boots to rangers working in the AgWild cooperative. In the end, 114 pairs of boots were delivered and distributed to rangers of Mugie, Suyian, Ol Maisor and Sosian, directly benefiting 114 rangers. The distribution was coordinated in collaboration with the management of each respective property, ensuring that the equipment reached those in the most demanding roles.
The key successes during the period were:
-
Benefits for the wildlife: While the grant was not directly focused on wildlife population monitoring, improved ranger efficiency and morale have contributed to enhanced patrol coverage. This, in turn, supports ongoing conservation efforts and reduces the risk of poaching in the region.
-
Benefits for the rangers: “Many of us patrol for hours, and having good shoes reduces foot injuries. It allows us to be more effective in protecting wildlife. We are extremely grateful for this support!" Jimmy Tom, Ranger at Ol Maisor

Achievements and Performance
Fundraising endeavours
Our work is made possible thanks to our trustworthy partners and your incredible support. We would like to thank the many individuals who supported us during 2024 to reach rural communities in Africa with healthcare services, and enabled women and girls to make choices to fulfil their potential. Furthermore, last year’s funds enabled us to provide equipment to rangers working on the ground to protect the wildlife in Laikipia. This would not be possible without your support.
Remunerations
No members of trustee team receive salaries or make any expenses. The only expenses incurred have been the low cost of the carol service accounting fees. The TVCT has no office and equipment costs, no travel expenses and simply donates funds to other registered charities, which go directly to the projects on the ground.
Financial review
Going concern
After making appropriate enquiries, the Trustees have a reasonable expectation that the Charity has adequate resources to continue in operational existence for the foreseeable future. For this reason, they continue to adopt the going concern basis in preparing the financial statements. Further details regarding the adoption of the going concern basis can be found in the accounting policies.
Reserves Policy
Moving forward from September 2024, The TVCT continues to support CHASE Africa with ongoing TMT and KAF projects. We have sufficient funding for the next 2 years as well as a £30,000 contingency fund should the TVCT have to close down for any reason.
