**Trustees’ Annual Report and Financial Statements for the year ending 31[st] May 2024** 



## **1. Aims and objectives** 

## Charitable purposes: 

- The advancement of educational and vocational services for young people in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and in the United Kingdom between the ages of 8-21. 

- To promote culture and heritage of the Democratic Republic of Congo in the United Kingdom via advocacy. 

- The advancement of citizenship or community development. 

## **2. Governance and structure** 

Revive Congo is a UK registered charity in England and Wales, and was registered as a CIO foundation in 2018 (charity no.1178341). The organisation is governed by its constitution. 

Revive Congo is currently volunteer-led, with thirteen volunteers and a board of four trustees. The Board of Trustees is responsible for the strategic direction and governance of the charity. Trustees report on the progress, risks & mitigations monthly, and maintain regular communications via email and WhatsApp with two annual executive board meetings to review the strategic direction of Revive Congo. Revive Congo also shares quarterly updates with the general public through e- newsletters, as well as ad-hoc updates through the charity's website. 

The board has actively reviewed governance policies, to ensure volunteers display good conduct. The board will continue to assess policies and financial management.

## **3. Summary of main activities** 

Revive Congo ensures the advancement of education for young people in the UK through delivering an annual summer programme to provide informal education on the history of the Democratic Republic of Congo. In addition to this, our summer youth programme provides an opportunity for young people to develop their project management skills, communication skills and financial management, as well as receive advice on careers, volunteering and academic opportunities. This programme has contributed to developing the skills and capabilities of young people to independently participate in society in the longer term. 

Revive Congo ensures the advancement of education for young people in the Democratic Republic of Congo through producing e-learning material to provide informal education on leadership and entrepreneurship skills. This learning resource seeks to develop the capability and capacities of their skill to independently and responsibly participate in society and to increase their employment prospects. 

Revive Congo ensures the advancement of citizenship or community development through supporting and encouraging young people in the UK to engage in social action within their community, by organising and delivering community projects, through delivering our summer programme. 



## **4. Achievements and Performance** 

In this financial year Revive Congo has continued to carry out charitable objectives through the following activities: 

## **Revive Congo Gala** 

Our recent charity gala proved to be a tremendous success, drawing over 100 enthusiastic supporters united in their commitment to children’s education in Congo. The event showcased vibrant Congolese culture through music, art, and storytelling, leaving attendees inspired and engaged. The gala not only strengthened community ties but also significantly increased individual donors, with a 30% rise in contributions following the event. This surge in support reflects heightened awareness of our mission and the positive impact of our work. The evening highlighted the power of collective action and reaffirmed our commitment to empowering Congolese children through education. 

## **Trip to the Democratic Republic of Congo** 

In October 2023, Revive Congo went to the DRC. Our objectives were to: 

- Our recent monitoring trip to Congo, led by the founders, provided valuable insights into key issues affecting young people. We engaged positively with stakeholders, fostering collaborative efforts to address challenges. During the trip, we distributed clothing to children, visited Emmanuel school where our children go to school. We were warmly introduced to a dedicated teacher, and observed encouraging progress. A highlight was our visit to Mission Marie Mère orphanage, our trusted partner, where we evaluated our school project supporting primary education for the children residing there. The trip reaffirmed our commitment to creating meaningful impact and ensuring a brighter future for Congolese youth. 

## **Hygiene and Sanitation** 

During our recent visit to the orphanage, we focused on improving hygiene and sanitation to enhance the children’s well-being. The initiative included a comprehensive clean-up of the premises and hands-on lessons to teach the children proper tooth-brushing techniques, promoting lifelong healthy habits. We also addressed critical needs by clearing and upgrading the toilet facilities, ensuring a safer and cleaner environment. Additionally, we provided the children with new beds, creating a more comfortable and hygienic living space. This project underscores our commitment to fostering a healthier, supportive environment for the children, enabling them to thrive and focus on their education. 

## **Online Campaigns** 

Over the past year we have used social media and our website to promote Congolese culture and heritage through sharing facts and information about the DRC, also focusing on providing key figures about the situation children face in the DRC and statistics showing the number of children who are not in education. We have also ensured that we have shared our fundraising activities, volunteer opportunities, profiles of our beneficiaries including the children we sponsor at Mission Marie Mere orphanage and former attendees of our youth programme.  During this period, we have reached over 44,000 members of the public. 



## **5. Financial position** 

The charity’s gross income on general funds for the year was £16,135 

The main source of income were from donations (monthly, and one-off) Expenses totaled £15,277 

There was no write-off of  from Trade Debtors on the Balance Sheet 

Reserves brought forward at the start of the year were £2,785, leaving a balance carried forward at 31 May 2024 of £3,643 

## **6. Future plans** 

Following activities delivered in the financial year of 23/24, the key objectives in 24/25 are: 

- To work with our partner Mission Marie Jane orphanage in order to enroll the children we are supporting into the next academic year. We also intend to send two more children to school in the next academic year. 

- To continue to improve water, sanitation and hygiene at  Mission Marie Jane orphanage through helping them improve their toilet and bathroom facilities. 

- To reach over 60,000 members of the public via our social media handles, website and online campaigns in order to raise awareness and promote the culture and heritage of the DRC 

● To visit Kinshasa, Congo in order to monitor and evaluate the progress of our work at our partnership Mission Marie Orphanage and also evaluate the school performance of the children we are sponsoring. We also wish to research whether we can use the orphanage as a location to host extracurricular activities for children who reside in close proximity to the orphanage 

● To run a IT skills 4 day workshop in the DRC for 20 young adults between the ages of 18-21 to teach them basic IT such as how to use a laptop, word and excel in order to provide them with the necessary skills they will need to advance in their education and career 

- To increase total supporter donations by 40%
