1. Aims and objectives

Charitable purposes:

The advancement of educational and vocational services for young people in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and in the United Kingdom between the ages of 8-21.
To promote culture and heritage of the Democratic Republic of Congo in the United Kingdom via advocacy.
The advancement of citizenship or community development.

1. Governance and structure

Revive Congo is a UK registered charity in England and Wales, and was registered as a CIO foundation in 2018 (charity no.1178341). The organisation is governed by its constitution.

Revive Congo is currently volunteer-led, with thirteen volunteers and a board of four trustees. The Board of Trustees is responsible for the strategic direction and governance of the charity. Trustees report on the progress, risks & mitigations monthly, and maintain regular communications via email and WhatsApp with two annual executive board meetings to review the strategic direction of Revive Congo (now held virtually due to COVID-19 restrictions). Revive Congo also shares quarterly updates with the general public through e- newsletters, as well as ad-hoc updates through the charity's website.

The board has actively reviewed governance policies, to ensure volunteers display good conduct. The board will continue to assess policies and financial management.

1. Summary of main activities

Revive Congo ensures the advancement of education for young people in the UK through delivering an annual summer programme to provide informal education on the history of the Democratic Republic of Congo. In addition to this, our summer youth programme provides an opportunity for young people to develop their project management skills, communication skills and financial management, as well as receive advice on careers, volunteering, academic opportunities and mental health. This programme has contributed to developing the skills and capabilities of young people to independently participate in society in the longer term.

Revive Congo ensures the advancement of citizenship or community development through supporting and encouraging young people in the UK to engage in social action within their community, by organising and delivering community projects, through delivering our summer programme.

2. Achievements and Performance

In this financial year Revive Congo has continued to carry out charitable objectives through the following activities:

We have continued partnership with an orphanage, Mission Marie Jane, to deliver the below:

Primary education : Supporting young pupils in Congo with primary education within Kinshasa through providing annual scholarships. We currently cover school fees, and indirect costs including exam fees, school uniform, stationery and books.

Educational learning: We believe that learning continues beyond the four walls of a classroom and through working with our partner, we intend to create an educational environment within the orphanage. Despite low levels of education within the country, we are keen to cultivate an educational environment for young people to improve learning capabilities in addition to formal education. We continue to promote international campaigns including World book day and Children mental health week. During the reporting year we facilitated interactive learning sessions within the orphanage for over 50 orphans.

Our beneficiaries range from the age of 3 - 18, with a focus on both male and female. We place an emphasis on promoting education for females, contrary to cultural practices through promoting the importance of educating girls, ensuring this is reflected through the selection of pupils which is managed by the orphanage.

We are currently supporting the schooling of four children from Mission Marie Mere Jane, between the ages of 6-9. All pupils attend Marie Jane Wilson Primary School, local to the orphanage. We have covered the annual cost of their school fees, exam fees, uniform, stationery and books.

Revive Congo Summer Youth Programme

In August 2020, we delivered our annual summer youth programme virtually which is to raise the aspirations of young people from disadvantaged backgrounds in the UK. This programme consisted of various workshops and professional speakers with a focus on capacity building, work experience, entrepreneurship and volunteering opportunities in their local communities. In addition to this, we covered mental health in order to raise awareness and provide our attendees with the necessary tools and resources should they need to access it. We found that introducing our mental health workshop allowed us to unpack and discuss the stigmas attached to those who suffer with this issue in the Congolese community.

The programme was delivered to approximately 10 young people from disadvantaged backgrounds and supported young people to develop their skills and capability, including skills such as presentation skills, project management, public speaking and financial management, as well as their employability prospects.

Supporting Mission Marie Jane Orphanage

Since the Coronavirus breakout, we have been in very close communication with the orphanage in order to find out how the pandemic has impacted them. Due to lockdown measures that were placed in Congo throughout 2020, the owner of the orphanage has struggled financially due to travel restrictions limiting her ability to generate income from farming, which supports the welfare of the orphans. Therefore, we have supported the orphanage that has over 50 children by covering the cost of food, water, charcoal to cook and medicine.

Online Campaigns

Over the past year we have used social media and our website, which was refreshed in March 2021, to promote Congolese culture and heritage through sharing facts and information about the DRC, also focusing on providing key figures about the situation children face in the DRC and statistics showing the number of children who are not in education. During this period, we have reached over 40,000 members of the public. More recently we have used our platform to raise awareness on mental health, given the indirect impact of the global pandemic.

3. Financial position

The charity’s gross income on general funds for the year was £3,665 The main source of income were from donations (monthly, and one-off) Expenses totalled £3,854

There was a write-off of 1,409 from Trade Debtors on the Balance Sheet

Reserves brought forward at the start of the year were £4,284, leaving a balance carried forward at 31 March 2021 of £2,686

4. Future plans

Following activities delivered in the financial year of 20/21, the key objectives in 21/22 are:

To run this year’s summer youth programme for 15 young people from disadvantaged backgrounds digitally (or possibly hybrid) in order to prioritise the health and safety of attendees, volunteers and speakers.
To be a part of responding to the impact of Covid-19 by focusing on mental health and targeting vulnerable groups, particularly those from the BAME community
Depending on whether Covid-19 restrictions are loosened, we plan to host two football tournaments engaging over 100 players from different backgrounds, including ethnic minorities in order to engage in sport and also integrate together thus promoting social inclusion.
To work with our partner Mission Marie Jane orphanage in order to enrol the children we are supporting into the next academic year.
To create an educational environment at Mission Marie Jane orphanage as detailed in our achievements and performance section.
To reach over 60,000 members of the public via our social media handles, website and online campaigns in order to raise awareness and promote the culture and heritage of the DRC
To visit Kinshasa, Congo in order to monitor and evaluate the progress of our work at our partnership Mission Marie Orphanage and also evaluate the school performance of the children we are sponsoring; Continue to implement stakeholder engagement, and scoping of local areas for child/educational facilities; we also wish to research whether we can use the orphanage as a location to host extracurricular activities for children who reside in close proximity to the orphanage

Covid 19

The impact of Covid 19 all around the world has meant that the charity has had to make changes to this year’s strategy and goals in order to manage risk. In particular:

There has been a temporary pause on all face-to-face meetings including board meetings. All meetings have been taking place via Zoom and we have managed to also keep in touch with our volunteers through phone calls and emails
Our scheduled trip to the Kinshasa in 2020 to visit our beneficiaries, monitor & evaluate our project has been postponed until 2022
Fundraising events which is one of the charity’s biggest source of incomes were cancelled this year and have been postponed until Summer 2021
Our annual Revive Congo summer youth programme was online this reporting year. Although we anticipate to implementing a hybrid model for our next Summer Programme scheduled for August 2021, (dependent on the Covid 19 restrictions and rules)
As we have not been able to have our monthly meetings, board meetings and oneto-one meetings physically, we were aware that this sort of drastic change could have an impact on our trustees and volunteers. Therefore, as a charity we made it our mission to ensure that we were able to support our trustees and volunteers by email, whatsapp and zoom. We also have implemented fortnightly check ins to check on the wellbeing of our team.
