## **Charitable Status**
The Association is affiliated to The British Beekeepers Association. It is implicit that the rules of the BBKA form part of the governing rules of the Association. Formed over 50 years ago it became a Charitable Incorporated Organisation (CIO) in 2018.
The Association is also known as Burton BKA.
## **Trustees and Committee**
The Trustees and Committee members who served during the year are shown on page 1.
There is no formal policy for recruitment and training of Committee members or Trustees. Appointments are made in accordance with the governing document and are approved at the AGM each year.
## **Association Objects**
The objects of the association are:
1. To preserve the Honeybee by promoting and furthering the craft of Beekeeping.
2. To educate the Association's members and the Public in all aspects of Beekeeping, including the benefits of bees in the Environment, in particular but not limited to the counties of Staffordshire, Leicestershire, Warwickshire and Derbyshire, in affiliation with the British Beekeeping Association.
## **Review of Achievements and Performance for the Year**
In membership terms 2021 was another very successful year for the Association, total membership reached 144 (2020 134).
## **COVID - 19**
2021 has again been a rather difficult year due to COVID. Monthly meetings were not possible until July, but we did manage to hold 4 meetings via Zoom, one of which was attended by more than 70 people. After a couple of false starts, we finally held a “face to face” AGM on 26[th] July, and thereafter the meeting programme returned to something approaching normal.
We would normally expect to attend at least half a dozen shows each year, but this year only one (Ashbourne) was possible in August.
## **Honey Show**
The Honey Show at Coopers’ Square was particularly well supported this year, the number of entries being sufficiently large to earn the association a Blue Ribbon from the honey show judge. Blue Ribbon status entitles class winners to enter the National Honey Show with their exhibits.

## **Education**
On the education front, we were able to train a record number (29 in total) of new beekeepers, by holding 3 beginner courses during the year.
4 Members took and passed BBKA module examinations, and 3 took and passed practical assessments (2 General Husbandry and 1 Basic Assessment).
Next year we plan to hold a further 2 beginner courses and will be encouraging more members to study the modules and/or prepare to take the Basic Assessment.
## **Training Apiary**
During the Spring, much work was done on the garden, and amongst the bees, which have grown in number and strength such that we were able to end 2021 with 7 colonies on site.
We had sufficient bees during the Summer to give thorough practical introductions to all the new beekeepers on beginner courses.
With the significant help of a £7k grant from the J & O Lloyd Fund, the Association was finally able to acquire the main club building, which was erected at the end of September. The construction of the composting toilet is well under way, and we fully expect all the structures to be complete in time for the beginning of the teaching season in March.
## **Financial Resources**
Association funds have continued to improve over the year. Income exceeded expenses overall by £8.5k (2020 £18.0k), largely due to the J & O Lloyd grant referred to above. During the year there were further significant investments in the training apiary amounting to £21.2k. After depreciation the net book value recognised in the balance sheet is shown as £35.7k (2020 £17.5k). Overall Association funds have risen to £53.0k (2020 £44.9k).
## **Asian Hornet**
Although in the last 2 years there have been no incursions of this invasive species, Asian Hornet remains a very real threat to beekeeping in the UK. This Association continues to keep an Asian Hornet Action team in readiness to work with the relevant agencies, by doing this we hope to ensure that everything which can be done to prevent this pest establishing itself is done.

I have completed my examination.
In connection with my examination, no matter has come to my attention:
1. Which gives me reasonable cause to believe that, in any material respect,
- a. The requirements to keep accounting records in accordance with section 130 of the Charities Act 2011; and
- b. The requirement to prepare accounts which accord with the accounting records compliant with the accounting requirements of the Charites Act 2011
have not been observed.
2. to which, in my opinion, attention should be drawn in order to enable a proper understanding of the accounts to be reached

## **Notes to the Accounts**
**Note 1.** Restricted funds are funds for which the use is restricted by the donor. Grants from bodies wishing to support a specific activity, for example the development of a training apiary, would be treated as restricted funds.
**Note 2.** The accounts have been prepared on an accruals basis. 2022 subscriptions received in 2021 have been treated as paid in advance and are not therefore included in Charity funds at the end of the year.
**Note 3** Association assets are stated at cost (or valuation at December 2021) less depreciation. Depreciation has been provided in 2021 at 15% (Library and Association equipment) or 10% (Cups and Awards) and 7.5% for Training Apiary Assets.
**Note 4.** The Association has a small shop, run for the benefit of members, enabling beekeeping materials to be purchased at competitive prices.
Shop stock was valued at cost at the close of business on 31 December and the figure for shop income has therefore been calculated using standard accounting practice.
**Note 5.** Cash in hand comprises cash floats confirmed as held by members at the year end.
**Note 6.** Creditors comprise expenses incurred by committee members prior to the year end, which have since been paid.
