Cross Green-Growing Together

Trustees' report (continued) for the year ended 31 March 2021

Objectives and activities

The charity's objects and activities

To further or benefit the residents of Cross Green and neighbouring wards in the metropolitan district of Leeds, without distinction of sex, sexual orientation, race or of political, religious or other opinions by associating together the said residents and the local authorities, voluntary and other organisations in a common effort to advance education and to provide facilities in the interests of social welfare for recreation and leisure time occupation with the objective of improving the conditions of life for the residents.

In furtherance of these objects but not otherwise, the trustees shall have power:

To establish or secure the establishment of a community centre and to maintain or manage or co-operate with any statutory authority in the maintenance and management of such a centre for activities promoted by the charity in furtherance of the above objects.

Public benefit statement

In setting our objectives and planning our activities our Trustees have given serious consideration to the Charity Commission’s general guidance on public benefit and in particular both ‘Advancement of Education’ and ‘Other Purposes Beneficial To Society’, specifically improvement and engagement with the local environment.

Achievements and performance

The Covid pandemic had a major impact on the third year of operation of Cross Green Growing Together, with the garden and hub unable to open to visitors for most of the year. As a result, ongoing garden-based activities were largely on hold.

Community support has been provided though, led by Mary Brennan, in the form of a weekly food hub which provided fresh fruit vegetables bread and milk to the community meals funded by Leeds Community Foundation to a total of £9,500. The support of the Foundation is greatly acknowledged at a time of community need. During the period of closure, the garden and facilities were maintained on a voluntary basis by Ian Lowther. His efforts are very gratefully acknowledged. The care and attention enabled the successful bid for Lottery Funds of £10,000 for a major upgrade of the garden to be implemented in 2021/22 in conjunction with Hyde Park Source. The year closed on a further high with further funds from Leeds Community Foundation arriving just in time for a Healthy Holidays programme to be delivered in the gardens to local school children across the Easter holidays of 2021.

Financial review

The net receipts for the year were £12,437, including net payments of £1,855 on unrestricted funds and net receipts of £14,292 on restricted funds.

Reserves policy

The charity's free reserves, excluding fixed assets, at the year end were £8,949.

The trustees have agreed that financial reserves will be reviewed annually at the AGM during the formative years of the charity.

Signed on behalf of the board of trustees on 09/12/2021
