THE Aiyfs SOClEfY SlDMoufH ao aHrlty Number 1178103 THE ARTS SOCIETY SIDM.OUTH TRusfEES' REPORT AND FINANaAL STATEMENTS FOR THE YEAR ENDED 31 MARCH 2021

The Arts Society Sidmouth CIO Charity Number 1178103 Trustees. Report for the period 1st April 2020 to 31° March 2021 References and Administratlve Information The CIO'S Trustees during the year were Stuart Hockey Chairman Philip Hughes Finance Officer Barbara Murphy Shirley Purves Edward Neather from I" May 2020 Graham Gill from 27th October 2020 Gill Gill from 21st November 2020 Sheila Hughes from 1st March 2021 The Trustees held 7 virtual (Zoom) meetings during the year. The day to day management of the Charity is undertaken by a delegated Committee: Jane Urquhart was the Acting Committee Chair from 26 March 2020 and was duly elected as Chair at the AGM on 7th October 2020. The Committee held 9 virtual (Zoom) meetings during the year. The independent examiners of the financial statements are Easterbrook Eaton Ltd.. Fore Street, Sidmouth EXIO 8LS. The Charivs contact address is Mrs B G Murphy, 76 Sidford Road, Sidmouth EXIO 9NJ; email address is sidmouth theartssocie .or . the website address is wvrn.sidarts.org.uk. The Charitys bankers are CAF Bank. Objects and Activities The Charivs aims are to support and promote for public benefit {a} advancement of aestheticeducation, Ib) cultivation, appreciation & study of decorative and fsne arts, {c) preservation of our national artistic heritage and Id) Arts education for school pupils and unlversity students.

Under normal non-covid distorted circumstances, in pursuit of these Objects, the Society arranges l} lectures, 2) study groups. 3) work undertaken by volunteers from the Society in preservation and recording in relation to the decorative and fine arts and 41 related educational activities for children and other members of the public. The Society also makes grants in support of Heritage Preservation, for art education in schools and for promising art and decorative & fine arts university students. When the Covid travel and social gathering restrictions are lifted, and the Committee Visits Coordinator post is filled, it is hoped that tours and visits to private houses, museums, exhibitions and other places of interest will be arranged three or four times each year. Achlevements and Performance The Societls normal activities were unavoidably disrupted by the Coronavirus pandemic. The intermittent lockdowns, restrictions on Members meeting for co-operative Heritage Preservation Activities, restrirtions on travel and closure of schools, make the suspension of all of our customarycharitable activities inevitable. The newly co-opted acting Committee Chair quickly restored Committee cohesion and the monthly lecture programme resumed in October with monthly webinar (Zoom} lertures. Those lecturers who had already been booked honoured their engagements: a majority of the Societvs Members were able to respond encouragingly to the electronic alternatives and as the season unfolded, on-line attendance centred round 175 connections, indicative of 50rne 230-240"attendee5". The Sidmouth-commissioned lectures were made available through a Zoom link to another local Arts Society. In turn, The national Arts Society and other Arts Societies offered us a variety of lectures, study days and virtual walking tours (e.g. Bath. Shakespeare's London. Venice and it5 Art Galleries, Siena, Athens, Cordoba, Ginza Tokyo): preparations had been in hand for supporting a Sidrnouth Science Festival talk (David Buckland "Cape Farewell" linking artistic creative insight and vision to environmental climate change), when the Festival had to be cancelled for a Covid lockdown. Electronic communication opens up a huge range of virtual opportunities for our Members and the wider public to pursue a deeper understanding and appreciation of the Arts and our National Heritsge: website expenditure and Arts Society Affiliation return excellent value for money in pursuing our Objectives. Grant5 totalling £1313 were paid out during the year {£2816 in 2019-20). An £800 grant was given to Sidmouth College to provide screen printing facilities and to support their in- house mental health and well-being Art workshops, just over £400 was given to a local Primary School to purchase two portable printing presses and just under £100 paid for transporting a local pupil's painting selected for exhibition in the National RBA Rising Stars Exhibition in London. Discovery Trail leaflets for two local villages (Salcombe Regis and Otterton) were made available to download from the Societrfs website as well as being

printed and made available in the local Tourist Information Centre and the local Library. The RBA exhibitor designed a Sidmouth Society Christmas Card which was printed, signed bv the Committee Chair and sent to all Members. The national Arts Societ￿$ "Printable Lectures" scheme, for local Societies to print and distribute a series of monthly lectures to those Members who do not have access to the internet, seemed beyond our resources and probably too costly through an external agency. It was impratticable to produce a Membership Programme Card this year but Newsletters were produced and distributed in each of December and March and Members continued to receive their quarterly Arts Society Magazines. Financlal Revtew In view of the pandernic-related disruptions, Members were offered a delayed date for subscription, along with an option to defer subscription until a clearer picture of the programme emerged. In the event, a very supportive 238 renewed their subscription for the year and 63 deferred until 2021122. With quite a few members having only inconvenient or no access to the internet, that only 47 left wa5 encouragingly modest". as Covid infection is brought under control, greater freedom of personal movement and opportunities for in-person and social activities will free the Committee to restore and embellish Membership Services for an increased Membership. Subscription income (£10,898) fell by 33% while charitable activity expenditure {£8,370) fell by 42%. That the level of Reserves rose to just under 9 months of "normal" annual expenditure testifies to skilful management of financial resources and indicates that there is comfortable headroom for rebuilding and strengthening Membership Services and Charitable Activities. Outlook With one major charitable activity being the series of monthly lectures in the local theatre, the Committee are maintaining close contact with the theatre management. We fervently hope that the vaccination programme and the high level of public adherence to the Covid safety instructions will enable an early relaxation of the nationwide and local safety restrictions and thence to the local theatre reopening at or near the beginning of the October 2021 annual cycle. The lecture programme has been booked and lecturers have agreed to come in person rf the theatre is open. or to deliver their lectures on webinar if it is not. A Study Days programme awaits permission to ensure it can go ahead with participants: it Is hoped to assess demand for resuming Visits and Tours when travel restrictions and group size limits are lifted.

Consideration is bein8 given to supporting an Art in the Community programme targeting advancement of aesthetic education arbd cultivation, appreciation and study of decorative and fine arts with particular focus on the vulnerable who have been adversely affected by . the Covid epidemic. So that the 2021 (Zoom) AGM can follow the June 2021 lecture, the time and date was moved to 3.15 p.m. on 16th June 2021. Funds There are no funds held as custodian trustees on behalf of others. Public benefft The Trustees have paid due regard to the relevant Charlty Commission guidance. and consider that the activities outlined in this report meet the public benefit requirement for charities.
