## Knaresborough Lions Club Report 2019/20

As Lion Jon Smithells took over the chain in July 2019, who could have foreseen what a Lionsitic year of two halves 2019/20 would be?

The club’s first big event of the new year was the annual beer festival as part of FEVA. Once again, the event was held at the end of the festival to coincide with Party in the Park. Sales were strong again, with income just under £8,000. While this was slightly down on the previous year, lower costs due to high levels of sponsorship of barrels due to sterling work in particular from Lion Tony Pedel meant that profit was up by almost £1,000.

Autumn can be a quieter period traditionally for the club but is used to start planning for the following year’s bed race, as well as Christmas activities. And in 2019, the club was given a big opportunity to host a mulled wine stall at Harrogate Christmas market. The event draws crowds in their tens of thousands with coaches arriving from across the country, so with planning led by Lion Richard Hall, teams to cover every shift were assembled including help from other local organisations such as the WI. The event proved to be a real money-spinner and profits were shared pro rata between the club and those organisations who helped.

In Knaresborough, the club was represented at Bright Friday and the Christmas market, with an appearance from Santa’s sleigh and mulled wine sold. The sleigh also toured the streets of the town most evenings in December. Across all Christmas events, over £25,000 was raised with almost £13,000 boosting the club’s bank account following deductions.

The New Year saw the opening of bed race entries with January also hosting Lion Jon’s charter dinner at the Dower House. A good turnout of Lions and local dignitaries had a very enjoyable Sunday evening of good food and good conversation. However, as bed race entries closed at the end of February, the impact of coronavirus was starting to show well beyond China from where it had originated. While the draw for bed race was made, the country entered lockdown in March and it was clear that it would be unfeasible to host the event, given the impact of the virus across the UK. Club meetings moved online and members became adept at logging onto Zoom every fortnight, to take a peek at everyone’s living room and discuss club business. It was a quiet period though, for with the country effectively shut down, not a single donation was made between March and May.

In order to keep the spirit of bed race alive, a virtual event was hosted online. Digital is not everyone’s cup of tea, but a smaller number of club members including Lions Kevin Lloyd, Martin Brock, Amanda George and Tony Pedel were able to put on an event on the day, with several hours of music, a scavenger hunt, a club-music fitness event and a video of the route onto which videos submitted by teams and individuals were super-imposed by SIRA Studios to simulate the race online, culminating in a dramatic crossing of a goldfish pond by a toy bed. A virtual balloon race was held, and t-shirts were sold to raise money and commemorate the lockdown event. The physical bed race was sorely missed but positive feedback came from many quarters from those who viewed videos and took part.

Overall income for the club was understandably down across the year due to the cancellation of bed race. Full accounts and a record of donations are provided separately to this report. It is important to note that figures include over £18,000 of ring-fenced bed race money to cover sponsorship and a few team entries which were unable to be refunded.
