Tonbridge Athletic Club- Trustees Report 2023

Over the course of the past year the Trustees have been very conscious that following lockdown and pandemic club should continue a firm and secure footing both financially and as a growing and developing athletics club.

We were conscious that many facilities needed to be improved and that we should continue as a club to offer good value to our members. We replenished the pole vault poles and also we arranged for repairs on the practice throws cage to be carried out this summer. Tonbridge School agreed to assist with the cost of this work once it was completed.

The Trustees approved the excellent practice of the Club paying from income for all entry fees to competitions whether national, regional or county for our athletes and to ensure that all athletes who wish to attend the National cross-country Championships should be able to do so. The income from our open meetings which are held every month during the summer is a major contribution to these expenses.

A few years ago there was a need to ensure that we had reserves should the relationship with Tonbridge School over the use of the athletics track and their grounds for training come to an end, but that relationship is now on a firm footing and that problem should not arise at least in the medium term.

The Trustees continue to have an excellent working relationship with the management committee with two of the Trustees being on that committee. We meet regularly either in person or remotely to discuss points which arise that need approval or clarification by us.

Any petty disciplinary matters arising within the club have been dealt with by the management committee although the Trustees have become involved in one case where a member of many years long-standing suddenly decided that he did not approve of the format of the constitution of the club even though it was voted on unanimously some years ago.

In the late summer of 2022, the club was able to hold its special Open meeting where we encourage rising stars from the world of athletics to come to Kent to compete. This year we said goodbye to Tom Bosworth who as yet is our only Olympian. Tom has retired and a suitable presentation was made.

The club rationalised its entries to the many differing leagues and this resulted in great success. The club still has a waiting list and this is something that the Trustees are discussing with the management committee; the eagerness of the youngsters in the area is such that we do not wish to lose their enthusiasm. Training and competition is a wonderful contribution by the club to the young persons of our community. Even though athletics is often a sport just for individuals, the league matches and especially the Kent veterans league have shown the value to the club of a team ethos.

At the annual general meeting the club voted to increase subscriptions by 1 pound as this was an increase from England athletics. The Trustees anticipate over the next few years approaches from our coaches for payment for their services. When

this does arise, the Trustees will be guided by the wishes of the members and the aims and objects of our constitution.
