Healing Paws Animal Rescue Trustees Report for The Period Ending 31 st March 2021

Charity Registration Number: 1177945 Address: 174 Leicester Road, Countesthorpe, Leicestershire LE8 5QW

Trustees Mrs Helen Glass Mrs Jackie Wills Mrs Tracey Turnbull Mrs Paula Willsmer

1. CONTEXT

Healing Paws Animal Rescue continues (as a relatively new Charity) to achieve a clear sense of purpose and direction for the future and the priorities of the Charity. As stated previously our Strategic Plan has a 10-year life span starting from August 2018 and remains subject to an annual review update. It should be noted that from March 2020 onwards two of the Trustees have been key workers (employed within Emergency Services and Frontline NHS) and as such our Charity work has had to be undertaken around this unprecedented additional workload.

Our Annual Report will therefore not be fully evaluated to the extent we would have hoped for and we have not been able to monitor our progress as rigorously as in the previous year but we continue to adapt and implement our Strategic Plan.

The Trustees recognise they need to continue to augment policies and procedures in the light of changes in animal welfare law both in Greece and the UK and changes due to Brexit. We continue to update and work on:

A Vision and Mission

The Strategic Plan is not static but is dynamic. Although the goals are unlikely to change, the action items may change on a regular basis. Action items may be revised or updated at quarterly Trustee meetings throughout the year as necessary. The Board of Trustees will undertake an Annual Strategic Plan review as part of their Annual Report. This is currently ongoing and we are evaluating our policy for supporting cats currently.

2.OUR VISION

“Our vision is a future where all animals are provided with a responsible and loving home for life and that Healing Paws Animal Rescue is recognised as a high-quality provider of animal welfare and community services on the Greek Island of Zakynthos”

Our LONG-TERM Vision is to build a Rescue and Rehabilitation Centre on the Island.

3.OUR MISSION

“Our mission is:

To promote humane behaviour towards animals, in particular on the Greek island of Zakynthos, by providing appropriate care, protection, treatment and security for animals which are in need of care and attention by reason of sickness, maltreatment, poor circumstances or ill usage. To educate the public in matters pertaining to animal welfare in general and the prevention of cruelty and suffering among animals. Our objectives are to rescue animals and rehome them and to do whatever we can to improve the living conditions of the strays and homed animals in Zakynthos.

4.OUR STRATEGIC FOCUS AREAS AND GOALS

To accomplish our vision and mission, Healing Paws Animal Rescue has identified six Key Focus Areas to concentrate on over the next three years. This is Year 3. Each Focus Area has specific strategic goals and objectives to be met. How we will meet our objectives, when by and what success will look like is detailed in the Operational Plan which will be reviewed and

updated each year. Focus Areas

5.ACHIEVEMENTS & CHALLENGES THIS YEAR

There is still no official animal rescue centre on the island of Zakynthos, indeed there are only a handful in the whole of Greece. We have continued our work and built on the foundations we had established last year engaging with the local Municipality. Their help is vital to work with us in assisting the raising of animal welfare standards on the island and to educate the population on neutering their animals, as well as implementing Greek law in relation to animal abuse and neglect. The Greek financial crisis coupled with the Covid Pandemic and National Lockdowns have meant that very limited financial help is available from the Municipality to address these problems.

We seek donations to support the work of the charity and its long-term objectives, our followers and adopters are incredible with their generosity; we have made huge efforts in the past year to fundraise with the aim of purchasing land for a shelter on the Island that would meet Greek Welfare Standards. Through regular donations and fundraising raffles and merchandise sales we have currently raised an amazing £40,000 to enable us to buy land. Currently some land has been identified and a huge amount of work is going on in Zante to seek approval for a rescue centre.

The trustees wish to thank each and every one of our fundraisers and donors who have achieved this incredible sum of money. To have our own rescue centre on the Island would provide a safe, infection controlled space to properly care for the animals prior to transport to their new adoptive homes. For some adult dogs, who are too scared to be homed, it would

provide a safe sanctuary for them to live out their life. Or for other adult dogs, particularly the males, we would be able to set up a programme of neuter and release, therefore help end the continuous cycle of unwanted puppies.

In this year we have homed around 170 dogs, mainly puppies. It was a very challenging year transporting the dogs to the UK due to Covid restrictions and Brexit, transport stopped after march 2020, resuming again briefly in July 20, bringing over 80 dogs in July, then another 90 to Nov 2020. Unfortunately transport stopped again for a further 5 months due to changes in Brexit import regulations and Greek laws, thankfully after considerable hard work from our transporter, we were able to satisfy all Brexit regulations and Greek laws and started transporting the dogs once again in May 2021.
