## **HOUGHTON BOXING CLUB**

**ANNUAL REPORT 2021-22**

## **Houghton Boxing Squad**

## INTRODUCTION

Houghton le Spring is a town based to the Southwest of the City of Sunderland and has little in the way of activity for young people. As a result of there being little provision the town has not attracted the much-needed financial support for the children and young people who live here. The Houghton and District Fitness and Youth Boxing club aim to turn this around.

The area was a thriving mining town until the 1980’s and employment has declined since the pit closed. Since that period the town has also suffered from areas of deprivation, unemployment, lack of opportunity, youth disorder and ill health. Local people identified the need for Places to Go and Things to Do in the area as anti-social behaviour and crime began to increase. As a result a number of volunteers took action to develop much needed provision to divert young people and adults away from anti-

social behaviour and into positive activities. Young people who attend the club are being encouraged to believe in themselves, create friendships, eat healthily, feel good about themselves and the volunteer coaches motivate them to make positive lifestyle choices as well as optimistic attitudes.

Houghton District Fitness and Youth Boxing founded in 2009 have had a dream to one day have our own premises where we can offer a safe, friendly and welcoming environment to the community of Houghton Le Spring and the surrounding area. After renting numerous locations and constantly trying to raise funds we have secured, bought and moved into our new home, situated in the heart of the Town Centre in a building that was formally an old cinema and more recently a snooker Club. The hard work starts now to develop the facilities and make it one of the best facilities in the area, we are excited and determined. We would like to thank everyone who has contributed since our inception to helping us find our home.

On the boxing side we once again held our annual show at the Ramside Hall. Where our boxers were able to showcase their skills to their friends and family. 2021-2022 season produced another bumper year in regards to results as our boxers and coaches travelled the lenghth and breadth of the country and once again rewarded with National Champions . Well done everyone!

## Fund raising

Fund raising continues to be at the forefront of our thoughts and efforts in order to renovate and upgrade our facilities for the ever-increasing costs associated with running the club such as energy prices and fuel.

## THE COACHES

The 5 coaches are all volunteers and have enhanced DBS clearance as well as being qualified coaches in boxing or fitness. These coaches give up much of their time to teach the children and adults of Houghton discipline and new skills that will develop their confidence and self-esteem thus diverting them away from anti-social behaviour and the like. The dedicated coaches have given up their own time to travel across England to give the young people of Houghton the opportunity to meet new people, gain independent skills (taking responsibility for their own kit, etc), engage in teamwork and take part in boxing competitions in other areas. While the club provides fitness and boxing sessions it seeks to develop individuals into active members of their community through increasing their confidence and widening their experiences.

## THE CLUB MEMBERS

The club has 50+ junior and 30+ senior members. The ages of the members are from 7 to 40 years of age.

All members look up to and continue to follow the fortunes of one of the region’s most successful boxers, Josh Kelly, who continues to star on the big stage. All the members, coaching staff and the committee wish him every success.

Josh Kelly wins by a unanimous decision against Chris Mbwakongo

## **HOUGHTON BOXING SHOW**

Houghton once again organised a successful open show at The Ramside Hall The money raised at the event will go into the Club’s re development fund. All of our boxers performed extremely well and made all of the club committee, members and supporters very proud.
