Treasurer’s report for BSSH AGM August 2025

This report presents a Financial Statement for the 12 months period ended on 30 June 2025 , including a balance sheet showing the Society’s net assets and reserves at that date.

## Balance sheet at 30 June 2025

Our financial position remains strong with net assets of £94,040, which includes the Birley bequest and operational reserves of £76,443. This takes into account the small deficit of £2,403 for the year. The trustee’s aim remains to increase disbursements, by way of awards, grants and support for events that meet the society’s objectives. The trustees will welcome suitable applications: information is available on the Society’s website and from any trustee.

## Income and expenditure account

Our two main income streams have remained healthy and we continue to earn additional income through the high interest rates on the medium term bank deposits. Note, the £0 for journal distribution accounts for a significant part of this year’s creditor figure. It did happen, but the bill was not paid in July.

## Publishing income

This remains strong and stable with the continued success of the society’s journal Sport in History, and the sponsorship provided under the publishing contract signed in 2018 with Taylor and Francis. This is due for renewal in the next 12 months.

## Subscripton income

This has also remained steady, although a few occurrences have occurred to deflate the income figures being reported. A change in policy resulted in a noteworthy refund being made and several incidents of members paying twice have been identified. Steps have been taken to refund the members concerned and corrective measures are being put in place to prevent this from happening in the future. However, the trustees are holding membership fees at the same level that has been required for over a decade and which represents exceptional value for money. Lifetime memberships are also available.

## Distributons (grants, awards, bursaries)

These have individually shown some variance from previous years with a greater level of award money given but lower amounts of research grants distributed. On balance the amount of money distributed is in excess of last year. There are a number of awards in the pipeline that will require payment once the projects are completed. It is hoped that increased promotion of the society’s grants and awards schemes will continue to draw on the reserves to continue supporting new and exciting projects and causes. There was an increased cost associated with the 2024 conference, but it was a great success and so should be considered value for money.
