Billingham and Stockton Borough Foodbank

Letter from Chair of Trustees

Billingham and Stockton Borough Foodbank as a charity in its own right was formed on 3[rd] April 2018, established from the existing Billingham Foodbank linked to New Life Church, Teesside.

We consist of 3 foodbank centres – Billingham, Stockton and Norton together with a food warehouse, clothing bank and some household goods.

Our board of trustees has changed significantly in the last year. Andrea Jackson, our chair, has retired from the board after a period of ill health. She served as a trustee for three years and also led our Norton foodbank centre. Cliff Henderson has also stepped down this year after almost 5 years as a trustee. Finally, Alan Coyle has retired after 6 years’ service as a trustee, following six years’ service as a volunteer supporting his wife Jill, our previous project manager. My sincere thanks to Andrea, Cliff and Alan for their commitment to the work of the foodbank.

I am pleased to join the board of trustees and become the new chair. I am joined by Emma Radcliffe and Bill Pearce as new trustees and look forward to us working together, with Bev Burton and Jill Coyle, to take the foodbank forward.

This year has continued to be challenging for many with the ongoing effects of the cost- ofliving crisis. We are grateful to the Trussell Trust who have provided financial support to enable us to employ a full time Citizens Advice worker to maximise income for our clients, The project has helped 625 clients in the last two years providing advice and almost £1m in financial benefit. The project is in its final year but we will seek further funding to continue this valuable work. My thanks to Diane (SDAIS) for her expertise and support.

My thanks to The Big Lottery fund, CF Fertilisers, Co. Durham Community Fund for their funding support, and Billingham Golf Club Captain James Collin, who nominated us as his charity of the year. My thanks go to the numerous local businesses who have continued to support their community together with the supermarkets- Tesco, Asda, Sainsburys, Co-op, Aldi, Lidl, and Warburtons and Greggs.

A huge thank you to Bev Burton, our finance trustee, who works tirelessly to keep everything running smoothly and to our project manager, Helen Winspear and warehouse manager, Billy Lake, I thank you for your hard work and dedication to provide the service and look forward to working with you to develop the strategy for the future.

Finally, I would like to acknowledge all of our supporters who either, give on a monthly basis through our bank account or our CAF donate account, or donate food and toiletries, your donations are much appreciated and support those in crisis in our community.

Steph Mason (Chair of Trustees)

Project Manager's Report

Summary

This has been a year were many in our community have continued to be affected by the cost of essentials. As always, we have tried to find a way to continue to support those in food crisis. At the year-end we had fed 7,506 people, a 15% reduction on last year. This is partly due to the success of our financial inclusion project and also the extra government hardship payments.

Personnel

Our three foodbank centres are primarily run by volunteers and I am indebted to those who have given us their time and talent to support our charity throughout this last year.

Outcomes

In the last year we processed 3,576 vouchers, 60% of which cited rising cost of essential as the reason for the crisis. Many of our clients visit just once or twice and we have seen many new people need our service this year. We have continued to supply clothing, school unforms and small household items.

Welfare advice

With a grant from Trussell Trust we have been able to employ a welfare adviser from Stockton Citizens Advice (SDAIS), who has provided advice and support to our foodbank clients. This project has been so successful over the last two years with 625 people being supported generating almost £1m in financial benefit. We are now commencing our final year of this grant funded project but it has been so beneficial we intend to ensure we can continue. We will look to grant funders and/or local Companies to support this important work.

Donations

Donations from the public have been largely made through Tesco stores at Billingham and Stockton, and also Asda, Stockton. Donations made by shoppers in these stores are topped up with a monetary donation.

We also have collection bins in Spar, Billingham, Norton and Stockton; Sainsburys Billingham and Bishopton Rd West; Stockton, Tesco By-Pass; Co-op Wynard; Aldi Billingham; Lidl Junction Road and Yarm Road. We are also working with the new Amazon centre at Wynyard. I am grateful for all donations made.

We receive end of day food from Tesco, M&S,Aldi and Lidl. This gives us fruit, vegetables and bread to give to clients in addition to their food parcels. We receive end of day sandwiches and cakes from Greggs.

We are grateful to Warburtons for the supply of fresh bread and bread products.

Christmas

Christmas was again a very busy time for us for both clients fed and donations received. We saw an increase of 48% foodbank usage in December in comparison to 2022. We continued our practice of making up food hampers for those in need and gave out hampers, together with some Christmas gifts donated by Tesco Billingham staff. My thanks to all those who donated.

Individual and regular donations

We have a generous community in the Stockton Borough and we appreciate all of the support we receive, whether it's a single food donation or local social event. Our local schools have been particularly supportive this year, we appreciate all you do. Special thanks to Steve and Rachel Wing who continue to undertake a weekly food collection from their neighbours. We receive a weekly food donation from Yarm Methodist Church and Yarm Lions, kindly delivered by Ian Fyfe, thank you Ian for all you do. We also run 'Friends of Billingham and Stockton Borough Foodbank' enabling donors to give financially on a monthly basis to support our work. This has been built on throughout the year and makes a significant contribution to the running of the Foodbank. My thanks to all who donate in this way.

Local Company support

We have received many financial donations from local Companies who are looking to help those in need in their communities. They often attend the Foodbank for their volunteer day, learning about our work and undertaking warehouse duties. It is great to see local business stepping up in this way and I appreciate all you do.

Warehouse

Our warehouse is managed by Billy Lake, supporting all 3 foodbank centres with food supplies. In addition, we house our clothing bank which also makes a financial contribution due to donations but more importantly helps those in need.

Partner and Referral Agencies

We work with around 30 active referral agencies throughout the Borough, all of which have switched to E-vouchers which speeds up the process of issuing vouchers for all concerned.

The future

We hope to expand our work with SDAIS providing support and advice to our Foodbank clients, and foster closer working relationships with our other referral agencies. This will ensure all those in need in the Stockton Borough get the best support available.
