Billingham and Stockton Borough Foodbank Letter from Chair of Trustees
Billingham and Stockton Borough Foodbank as a charity in its own right was formed on 3[rd] April 2018, established from the existing Billingham foodbank linked to New Life Church, Teesside.
We consist of 3 foodbank centres – Billingham, Stockton and Norton together with a food warehouse, clothing bank and some household goods. Our foodbank at Stockton Hope closed in April to become a food pantry. My thanks to Glynnis and the team for their work over the last few years and wish them well with their future ventures.
Our Chair, Janine Browne, moved on to a new position this year, resigning as chair and trustee of the charity. Also, Luke Taylor, has stepped down as a trustee. My thanks to Janine and Luke for their work for the Charity over the last 5 years. We are looking to recruit 4 new trustees this coming year.
We have held three trustee meetings this year and undertaken a skills audit. Trussell Trust have caried out a review of our procedures and we have carried out an audit of health and safety.
This year has continued to be challenging for many with the ongoing cost- of- living crisis. Unfortunately, the need for foodbank support has never been greater and we are grateful to the Trussell Trust who have provided financial support to enable us to employ a full time Citizens Advice worker to maximise income for our clients, The project has helped 324 clients this year providing advice and over £675,000 of income maximisation. My thanks to Stockton Citizens Advice (SDAIS) for their expertise and support.
My thanks to Stockton Borough Council, The Teesside Charity, Newcastle Building Society and Co. Durham Community Fund for their funding support, together with the numerous local businesses who have continued to support their community. Also, the supermarkets who continue to support our work- Tesco, Asda, Sainsburys, Co-op, Aldi and Lidl.
Finally, I would like to acknowledge all of our supporters who either, give on a monthly basis through our bank account or our CAF donate account, or donate food and toiletries, your donations are much appreciated. We are all aware of the financial challenges that will continue to face many of those in our community this year and unfortunately there is likely to be a reliance on the foodbank service.

Project Manager's Report
Summary
This has been a year were so many in our community have been affected by the cost-of-living crisis. As always, we have tried to find a way to continue to support those in food crisis. At the yearend we had fed 8896 people, an increase of 20% on last year. We also provided food support to family hubs, schools, food pantries and several smaller charities.
Personnel
Our three foodbank centres are primarily run by volunteers and I am indebted to those who have given us their time and talent to support our charity through this last year.
Outcomes
In the last year we processed 3,979 vouchers, 68% of which were from those citing low income. We have seen many new clients visiting the foodbank due to the impact of the cost-of-living crisis. We have also provided short dated food to the many food pantries in the Stockton Borough.
Welfare advice
With the support of Trussell Trust we have been able to provide help and support to Foodbank clients from a welfare adviser from Stockton Citizens Advice (SDAIS). This has made such an impact on those receiving advice, ensuring that many have been able to rectify the underlying cause of their crisis. This year we have supported 324 clients generating £675,000 potential financial gains.
Donations
Donations from the public have been largely made through Tesco stores at Billingham and Stockton, and also Asda, Stockton. Donations made by shoppers in these stores are topped up with a monetary donation.
We also have collection bins in Spar, Billingham, Norton and Stockton; Sainsburys Billingham and Bishopton Rd West; Stockton Tesco By-Pass; Co-op Wynard; Aldi Billingham; Lidl Junction Road and Yarm Road. I am grateful for all donations made.
We receive end of day food from Tesco, Aldi and Lidl. This gives us fruit, vegetables and bread to give to clients in addition to their food parcels. We receive end of day sandwiches and cakes from Greggs and Co-op Wynyard.
This year we have been supported by Warburtons with the supply of fresh bread and bread products.
Christmas
Christmas was again a very busy time for us for both clients fed and donations received. We saw an increase of 48% foodbank usage in December in comparison to 2022. We continued our practice of making up food hampers for those in need and gave out hampers, together with some Christmas gifts donated by Tesco Billingham staff, and TSB Stockton staff and customers. My thanks to all those who donated.
Individual and regular donations
We have a generous community in the Stockton Borough and we appreciate all of the support we receive, whether it's a single food donation or local social event. Our local schools have been particularly supportive this year, we appreciate all you do. Special thanks to Steve and Rachel Wing who continue to undertake a weekly food collection from their neighbours. We receive a weekly food donation from Yarm Methodist Church and Yarm Lions, kindly delivered by Ian Fyfe, thank you Ian for all you do.
We also run 'Friends of Billingham and Stockton Borough Foodbank' enabling donors to give financially on a monthly basis to support our work. This has been built on throughout the year and makes a significant contribution to the running of the Foodbank. My thanks to all who donate in this way.
Local Company support
We have received many financial donations from local Companies who are looking to help those in need in their communities. They often attend the Foodbank for their volunteer day, learning about our work and undertaking warehouse duties. It is great to see local business stepping up in this way and I appreciate all you do.
Warehouse
Our warehouse is managed by Billy Lake, supporting all 3 foodbank centres with food supplies. In addition, we house our clothing bank which also makes a financial contribution due to donations but more importantly helps those in need.
Partner and Referral Agencies
We work with 235 referral agencies throughout the Borough, all of which have switched to E - vouchers which speeds up the process of issuing vouchers for all concerned.
The future
We hope to expand our work with SDAIS providing support and advice to our Foodbank clients. This will be key in the light of the rising cost- of- living crisis.
We will continue to support smaller charities and community projects where we can and challenge government decisions affecting those in food poverty, with the support o f Trussell Trust.
