The trustees present their report and accounts for the year ended 30 June 2024. The charity is a Charitable Incorporated Organisation (CIO) which was registered on 13th March 2018.
## **Trustees of the charity**
The trustees who have served during the year and since the year end were as follows:

The board of trustees are responsible for the overall management and decision making of the charity, from events to raising money and awareness of the charity’s aims and vision, to the administration of grants and the deliverance of events for the people who benefit from our work, which are referred to as ‘dreams’. They are designed to combat the negative effects of cancer and fight impacts of further mental health conditions, including post diagnosis PTSD. The day-to-day running is overseen by the chairman, trustees and run by the working directors. The board meets quarterly through meetings but not confined to this structure and several – or all – of the board members meet as and when required, for example in the build up to a specific event.
The directors are also assisted by a team of Events Co-ordinators, Community Co-ordinators, Healthier Activities Co-ordinator and Youth Ambassador, whose valuable input plays an important role in our work.
Regarding the recruitment of trustees, anybody can become involved in the work that the charity does and if somebody would like to go a step further and become a trustee, this would be considered by the board and voted for either at the annual meeting or one of the other meetings we have throughout the year. Alternatively, should the charity recognise the potential in somebody to add value to the trust and help us to better achieve our stated aims and objectives, the board may ask somebody to become a trustee and again this will be voted upon.
All our trustees and volunteer team, give their time free of charge, and no remuneration or expenses were paid to the trustees or co-ordinators in the year.
## **Activities and objectives**
The main objective of the ttrust is to provide, or help to provide, local cancer sufferers with a ‘dream’ or ‘wish’, usually in the form of an event or service (for example a day out, holiday, wedding, garden renovation etc) to combat the negative effects of cancer and fight the onset of post diagnosis PTSD and other mental health conditions. Although this is the main aim, we also aim to help one person a year that isn’t related to cancer (Eve’s Grant) and promote healthy activities for local people, an ideal which is not only shared by the Board but was also very much in keeping with Eve Merton’s personal philosophy.
These aims are from using the experiences and grief of losing a mother, taking both the positives and negatives from those challenging months and using them to help other local families going through the same things.

## **Achievements and performance**
This financial year was most certainly a year of transition, and one of the most challenging the charity has experienced since its formation in 2011. COVID-19 saw us challenged of course, but the generous donation of £75,000 from a fantastic corporate partner meant a lot of the pressure had been lifted.
The 2023/24 financial year started on the back of another successful Legends football event had raised just over £90,000, which allowed the existing management the tools to attempt to grow the charity through additional marketing and financial expense. The overall aim being to raise the awareness levels of the charity and therefore open up fresh avenues of revenue and support, increasing income and profit to ensure future sustainability. Additional to this, the charity would seek National Lottery support to increase the paid staff, allowing the new staff to focus on expanding and growing our Dreams process, while existing management could focus on other areas of the charity, such as the financial growth and raising awareness of the work we do.
Sadly, by November of this financial year, one of the charities 2 co-Founders and current management team would make the decision to leave the charity to seek his professional growth elsewhere. This would be challenging for multiple reasons, the wrench of losing the key member of the original team, and in some aspects the heart of the charity, but that person was also the lead behind the growth campaign, which increased the charities outgoings in 2022/23 and the early months of 2023/24, AND the lead behind the National Lottery funding application, which was confirmed successful in October 2023 and set to start in early 2024.
The departure would lead to a full evaluation of the charities processes, aims, goals and scrutiny of the existing expenses. On the back of that evaluation, it was agreed the sharp increase to the charities expenses within the 2022/23 accounts, had not resulted in the desired increase to the charities awareness numbers, or for the most part, increased the income sufficiently to justify a continuation down the same path.
So, the 2023/24 accounts are very much a tale of two halves, with December 23 to June 24 very much about evaluation, restructuring, streamlining and focusing on proven areas of success, whilst at the same time pulling back from the increased marketing budget. The Trustees are in full agreement about the charities new focus and believe this has already seen much more balance to the charity’s accounts and its overall operations. We aim for the progress seen in 2024 to continue into the 2024/25 financial year.
New lottery funded employees would interview and start their roles as of 2[nd] April 2024.
## **THE DREAMS:**
## **Family Time**
Prior to July 2023 Karen was a hardworking healthcare assistant on a busy cardiac ward at Doncaster royal infirmary and an even busier nanny to her three boisterous grandsons who dote on her as much as she dotes on them. It’s safe to say nanny is one of the most frequent requests in our house! We went on a lovely holiday altogether to Ibiza in June 2023 which Karen had been planning and waiting for since her 60th birthday in 2020 (unfortunately COVID and the arrival of her third grandson had delayed it 3 years). We then had Rupert’s first birthday and christening party which was enjoyed by all and at this point Karen still felt well.
Unfortunately, a few weeks later in mid July 2023 Karen suddenly lost her appetite. She then became dizzy and within a few weeks, started vomiting regularly. Consequently, her weight started

to drop. Karen visited her GP who arranged for blood tests, at that time her liver function was measuring abnormal so they planned to repeat this 6 weeks later. In the meantime, Karen was still struggling to eat and at times becoming faint and passing out, both at home and work. The GP ordered more extensive blood tests and this time her CA125 levels came back as abnormal. This normally indicates ovarian cancer however ultrasounds came back negative for this.
This then followed a difficult time waiting for tests and being passed between different departments trying to figure out what was causing these distressing symptoms. At the end of November following a CT scan came the news that none of us wanted to receive that they had found a large liver tumour which was inoperable and incurable. Cholangiocarcinoma was diagnosed.
To say we were devastated would be a gross understatement. Karen is central in not just ours and our boys lives but to so many around her….she has impacted so many people’s lives in such a positive way as is evident by the amount of visitors she continues to have week by week!
We don’t know exactly what the next few weeks/months will hold but we’re all keen to make the most of every moment that we can. Karen’s made a bucket list and one of those was to go to a woodland lodge with the boys. Eves Trust would help to make this a reality.
I’d first heard of Eve’s trust a few years ago after a friend and colleague received a dream from them while undergoing treatment for cancer. I looked at the website and it was really straight forward to complete an application highlighting what dream Karen would like.
I was surprised at how fast I was contacted and informed that Karen’s application was successful, and her dream would be granted. Bayleigh was in contact quickly to ask us what we’d like and any preferences. Within a week it was all booked! It was honestly the easiest process I’ve ever gone through, which is just what we needed right now!
A matter of weeks later we all went to Darwin Forest in Matlock. We stayed in a lodge with a hot tub, and it was just fantastic. What a wonderful place! The lodge provided the perfect base for us to be together as a family but also have enough space for the kids to run around and play. We were able to spend time walking and enjoying being outside but also take the kids swimming and on their bikes. We enjoyed family meals together at the lodge, including a takeaway away afternoon tea from the onsite restaurant and also had a gorgeous Sunday lunch. These were all simple things but meant the world to us to be able to be together and make memories with the children. It was relaxing, magical and absolutely perfect.
We are so incredibly grateful to Eve’s trust for providing us with this opportunity to spend this precious time together making memories. They gave us a little bit of relaxation and magic in an incredibly difficult time and gave Karen and all of us precious time to just be together. Thank you so much.
## **The Christmas Spirit Dream**
Jacqueline was looking after her husband, who has terminal asbestos mesothelioma, when she herself was diagnosed with breast cancer in July 2019. She underwent surgery and chemotherapy,

then continued with targeted therapy with its many side effects, but she was just so thankful to have been given the all clear.
In January 2023 she was sent for an X-ray as was having hip pain, but this just showed wear and tear due to arthritis. By May 2023 she became extremely poorly and was taken into A&E. A CT scan showed that the cancer had returned and spread to her liver and multiple bones, and it was now terminal. Jacqueline was passed to the palliative care team and started on low dose chemotherapy and targeted treatments to help alleviate symptoms. Despite the poor prognosis, Jacqueline always remained positive and upbeat, and a nurse at Chatsfield put her forward for a dream with The Eve Merton Dreams Trust.
Jacqueline had always wanted to stay in a Christmassy Hotel and the charity organised a trip to The Grand hotel in York. It was absolutely fantastic and just the escape they needed. Baileigh, our Dreams Coordinator, contacted the hotel to make sure they had plenty of decorations up and the Christmas market made it so magical. All the hotel staff were amazing and helped to make their stay just perfect!
Thank you to all at Eves Trust, and The Grand Hotel, for making her dream a reality. It made a real difference for Jacqueline.
## **A Dream Not to Never Forget**
On receiving a Dream request from Darren’s family, and after a difficult year, the family were keen for him to experience something that would leave a lasting memory. Darren is a Leeds Utd fan, and with the support from a friend of the charity, Rob Peters, we went about giving a dream day for Darren, at the club that he loves.
Darren and his family arrived at a hotel near to the ground on the Friday evening before the match and spent time as a family enjoying a meal.
Saturday morning, they were picked up and taken to the ground, Darren was taken into the legends area and met some former Leeds United players and legends.
On arrival, Darren and his family were taken on a surprise tour via the player’s tunnel onto the pitch where they met all the Leeds Utd team. Luckily there was also a club photographer, ready to capture this surprise for all the family! Naturally the excitement continued as the family were treated as honoured guests of the club and settled down to enjoy the full matchday experience.
Darrens daughter shared, “I Just want to say there would not be enough thanks for everything that Eves trust have done for my dad with a surprise visit to Leeds United!”
They made a magical dream come true for my dad and his family and it’s something we will all never forget, we’ve cherished every single moment, and we will never forget this weekend! The volunteers went above and beyond to make sure everything was perfect, all the volunteers at Eve’s trust deserve a medal for all their time and efforts they give to make family’s special memories. ## **A Family Fights, a Loving Wife, Mother & Grandmother**
When helping so many families who are impacted by cancer, it’s inevitable we come across a request close to home. Yvonne is the mother of one of our lovely volunteers and she is currently fighting her 2[nd] diagnosis of Cancer, the following is a write up from both Yvonne’s husband and daughter. We were honoured to help Yvonne smile, enjoying special trips with her family.
Yvonne’s daughter Claire shared her story with Eve’s Trust and her mum’s dream, “I started working as a dream’s coordinator for Eve’s Trust in 2013 shortly after the first time my mum was diagnosed with breast cancer. We were very thankful at this time that it had been caught early and my mum was treated and cured. However, seeing what my mum went through, drove my passion to want to help others.
I never ever imagined that one day my family would be on the receiving end of the amazing work that Eve’s Trust does. But, sadly in June last year, my lovely mum was given the devastating news that she again, has breast cancer. This time at a more advanced stage where it can’t be cured.
After hearing of my mum’s heartbreaking news and the life long battle she faces, my friends at Eve’s Trust were so lovely and encouraged us to apply for a dream for her. They instantly wanted to help her and my family to smile.
The charity organised for my mum and dad to have a break away together to London and to watch a show. Something my mum and dad have always loved. I know from doing dreams for other people that having something to look forward to, during such a difficult time, was so important and I saw it with my mum .
To begin with she kept saying she was worried as she didn’t want to cost the charity any money, and she didn’t want to put anyone out. This is something I’ve heard many times when sat with people who have been forwarded for dreams. However, that’s the reason the charity exists and why all the volunteers do all the hard work they do. Once my mum was reassured over her worries, she was so excited and she smiled again. She had something to look forward to and something good to focus on. She was so grateful to Eve’s Trust.
Yvonne’s husband Keith shared, “Supporting my wife, who has been diagnosed with cancer on two separate occasions and has now been advised her secondary cancer cannot be cured; has been, by far, the most painful and challenging part of my life.
Nothing can prepare you for watching the person you love most in the world suffer from repeated pain and suffering. Knowing there is absolutely nothing you can do to take away their pain.
The Eve’s Trust Charity was set up by two amazing people who themselves felt the pain caused by losing a family member to cancer after a long battle.

By providing the opportunities the Eve’s Trust Charity do, for families suffering from cancer; to forget their troubles for a short time… I am simply lost for words as to the positive impact their work is having.
My personal gratitude will never end for the help Eve’s Trust have provided my wife and I. Whilst cancer remains incurable, the support Eve’s Trust Charity provides is simply invaluable. Many, many thanks for all your hard work you are diamonds among us…”
Claire continued, “My parents and they had the best time in London, they made some memories that neither of them will ever forget. On top of doing this fantastic break for my parents, Eve’s Trust also organised for our whole family to have a day out at Yorkshire Wildlife Park. We have always been an incredibly close family and my mum adores each one of her grandchildren. To have that one day out with our family meant the world to my mum. To all of us.
Medicine is of course so important when battling with cancer, but I strongly think that happiness and joy is equally important. Eve’s Trust provides not only happiness and joy to people who deserve it the most but also everlasting memories for cancer patients and their whole families.

## **Financial review**
The Statement of Financial Activities shows a total surplus for the year of £49,850. The charity has unrestricted funds of £81,565 and restricted funds of £17,742 at the year end.
The trustees consider that reserves will hold steady to ensure that, in the event of a significant drop in funding, they will be able to continue the charity’s current activities so that dreams can be met and funded properly.

I report to the charity Trustees on my examination of the accounts of the company for the year ended 30 June 2024 which are set out on pages 9 to 18.
## **Respective responsibilities of trustees and examiner**
As the charity’s Trustees you are responsible for the preparation of the accounts in accordance with the requirements of the Charities Act 2011 (‘the Act’).
I report in respect of my examination of the charity’s accounts carried out under section 145 of the Act and in carrying out my examination I have followed all the applicable Directions given by the Charity Commission under section 145(5)(b) of the Act.
## **Basis of independent examiner's report**
I have completed my examination. I confirm that no material matters have come to my attention in connection with the examination giving me cause to believe that in any material respect:
1. accounting records were not kept in respect of the charity as required by section 130 of the Act; or
2. the accounts do not accord with those records; or
3. the accounts do not comply with the applicable requirements concerning the form and content of accounts set out in the Charities (Accounts and Reports) Regulations 2008 other than any requirement that the accounts give a ‘true and fair view’ which is not a matter considered as part of an independent examination.

## **1. ACOUNTING POLICIES**
## **Accounting convention**
The financial statements have been prepared under the historical cost convention and in accordance with Accounting and Reporting by Charities: Statement of Recommended Practice applicable to charities preparing their accounts in accordance with the Financial Reporting Standard applicable in the UK and Republic of Ireland (FRS 102) – second edition published in October 2019 , the Financial Reporting Standard applicable in the United Kingdom and Republic of Ireland (FRS 102), the Charities Act 2011 and UK Generally Accepted Practice as it applies from 1 January 2019.
The Eve Merton Dreams Trust is a charity formed in England within the United Kingdom. The principal address is given in the charity information on page 1 of these financial statements.
These financial statements are presented in sterling which is the functional currency of the company and rounded to the nearest £.
## **Incoming resources**
All incoming resources are included on the Statement of Financial Activities when the charity is legally entitled to the income and the amount can be quantified with reasonable accuracy.
Donations are recognised where there is entitlement, certainty of receipt and the amounts can be measured with sufficient reliability.
## **Resources expended**
Liabilities are recognised as soon as there is a legal or constructive obligation committing the charity to the expenditure. All expenditures is accounted for on an accruals basis and has been classified under headings that aggregate all cost related to the category.
Charitable expenditure comprises those costs incurred by the charity in the delivery of its activities and services for its beneficiaries. It includes both costs that can be allocated directly to such activities and those costs of an indirect nature necessary to support them.
## **Governance costs**
Governance costs include costs of the preparation and examination of the statutory accounts, the costs of trustee meetings and the cost of any legal advice to trustees on governance or constitutional matters.
## **Support costs**
Support costs include central functions and have been allocated to activity cost categories on a basis consistent the use of resources, for example, allocating property costs by floor area, or per capita, staff costs by the time spent and other costs by their usage.

## **6** . **PRIOR YEAR ADJUSTMENT**
In the year ended 30 June 2022, income and cash at bank was overstated by £34,589 due to duplication of donations collected via a third party organisation.
