## **Objectives** 

Saddleworth RDA is a Riding for the Disabled charitable group based at Saddleworth Stables, Diggle near Oldham.  We offer equestrian opportunities for local children and adults with physical disabilities, mental health or learning difficulties to develop knowledge of horse care and experience fun, therapeutic horse riding sessions.  Our aim is to provide inclusive access to the benefits of horse riding and contact with horses to people with additional needs from all social and ethnic backgrounds in the Saddleworth, Oldham and surrounding areas with high quality sessions which have a far reaching and measurable impact on their lives.  Importantly, the group provides meaningful volunteering opportunities to local people. 

## **Summary of the Year** 

On 21 March 2020 the charity suspended all activities due to the Coronavirus pandemic, which significantly impacted the running of our charity and of those all across the country.  We are immensely proud of all our efforts to keep the charity running throughout the pandemic, despite enforced isolation, re-starts, strict covid measures, social distancing and difficulties associated with fundraising. 

We went through the RDA Re-start program and welcomed 23 participants back to the group for non-ridden, sensory sessions from 11 July 2020 but unfortunately by the end of July, Trustees made the decision to suspend sessions again, due to the high number of covid infections in the local area and the desire to keep everyone safe. 

We continued to maintain a visible presence on social media and kept strong connections with the volunteer team and participants/families through watsapp and zoom. 



In September 2020 new equine Twinkle was assessed virtually by the county coach, Sheila Saner and passed as suitable to join the pony team. 

Fundraising activities were heavily restricted, however, in October Trustees Derek and Sally took part in a fancy dress Halloween spooky trail around Diggle village leading their ponies and shared photographs with riders throughout the morning, which was very entertaining. 

We were able to join the ladies of the Inner Wheel, Oldham in February 2021 to give a presentation over Zoom which was well received and they will come in the summer to present a cheque. 

On 7 March 2021 we agreed a second Re-start plan with county chair Sheila Saner and volunteers attended 2 training days on 10 and 17 April to re-familiarise the equines with groups of people and to refresh our training, health & safety and safeguarding responsibilities. 

On 24 April, 12 participants attended non ridden, sensory meet and greet the ponies sessions which were free of charge.  The children were very excited about seeing their ponies again after such a long time away.  They were able to stroke and groom the ponies and lead them in the arena. 

The Trustees have held meetings more regularly than in a typical year to monitor government and RDA guidance on covid safety measures, with the majority of meetings taking place remotely via zoom. 

## **Financial Review** 

Income from riding lessons was significantly reduced due to the impact of the covid pandemic, lockdowns and social distancing measures.  There were only two lesson payments received on 27 July 2020, otherwise our only income was a regular weekly donation made by a participant’s parent, Just Giving donations, Smile Amazon, Gun Club and the Halloween fundraiser. We did receive the final £1,000 payment from Groundworks after work had been completed on the hub.  Expenses were carefully controlled and managed and Trustees were congratulated by the Regional and County RDA Chairs for successfully managing the group’s finances during the pandemic as other small groups had been forced to close due to lack of resources.

- 20 of the participants were aged under 25 

- 32 new enquiries were received and application forms sent out 

- We delivered 25 sensory/quiet time sessions

- Dylan – full loan agreement, reduced to one day per week in August 2020 

- Ludo – one day per week loan agreement 

- Tank – as required, loan agreement 

- Twinkle – assessed virtually September 2020

## Volunteer progression

- Volunteers are regularly encouraged to take on new opportunities, suggest lesson plans, fundraising ideas etc 

- 2 Volunteers are on the Coaching Pathway 

_We would like to thank the volunteer team who work so tirelessly to make our group the successful and vibrant group that it is. Without their commitment it would not be possible to run the group and they have sustained us throughout a very difficult year._ 

## Grants/Funding 

- There are currently no grant applications pending 

- Grants were received this year Co-op Community Fund

- Invite Greater Manchester Mounted Police section to the Countryside Challenge 

- Make enquiries to BETA to see if a Horse Simulator could be hired for the Countryside Challenge 

- Engage with local press to highlight the event, recruit volunteers and promote the locally to increase fundraising opportunities
