Structure, Governance and Management
Manchester Tamil Association is a non-political, non-profit cultural organisation serving Tamils living in and around the Greater Manchester area. The charity is directed by a board of 11 trustees, who are responsible for the charity’s governance, strategic direction and compliance with applicable legal and regulatory requirements. The trustees meet regularly to oversee the charity’s activities, review priorities and ensure that the charity’s resources are applied solely in furtherance of its charitable purposes.
The trustees are supported by 15 volunteers who contribute their time and skills to the delivery of the charity’s programmes and events. The contribution of volunteers remains important to the effective operation of the charity and to the continued delivery of services for beneficiaries and the wider community.
Objectives and Activities
The charity’s objects are to advance cultural, social and educational support for Tamils in Greater Manchester and the surrounding area. In pursuing these aims, the charity promotes cultural and social integration while encouraging children and young people to understand, learn and preserve the Tamil language and the rich heritage of Tamil culture. In setting the charity’s objectives and planning its activities, the trustees have had due regard to the Charity Commission’s guidance on public benefit. The trustees consider that the activities undertaken during the year furthered the charity’s purposes for the public benefit by supporting beneficiaries through cultural education, community participation and wider social inclusion.
During the year, the charity continued to deliver cultural and social activities for Tamil families and the wider local community. A principal area of activity was the support of

approximately 60 children and young people aged between 5 and 18 through programmes designed to develop their engagement with Tamil language, heritage and cultural values. Through these activities, the charity seeks to strengthen community identity, encourage intergenerational learning and promote active participation in community life.
Achievements and Performance
During the reporting period, the charity sustained its programme of cultural and social activities and continued to provide a welcoming and supportive environment for Tamil families in the Greater Manchester area. The continued enrolment of approximately 60 children indicates sustained engagement from beneficiaries and ongoing demand for the charity’s services. The trustees consider that the charity’s work has made a positive contribution to the preservation of Tamil language and culture among children and young people, while also promoting inclusion, cohesion and participation within the wider community.
Financial Review
The trustees report that the charity’s financial position remained stable during the year and that available resources were managed prudently to support the charity’s ongoing activities. The trustees monitor income and expenditure on a regular basis in order to maintain financial stability and ensure the continued delivery of services. The annual accounts provide further detail on the charity’s income, expenditure, assets and liabilities.
The trustees recognise the importance of maintaining an appropriate level of reserves to meet foreseeable commitments and to protect the continuity of the charity’s activities. At the date of this report, the trustees consider the charity’s reserves position to be adequate for its current level of operation, and this position will continue to be kept under review in line with the charity’s needs and planned development.
Plans for the Future
The trustees intend to build on the charity’s current stable position by expanding its reach to serve a broader section of the community and by diversifying the services offered in future years. This will include exploring opportunities to widen participation, strengthen community engagement and develop additional cultural, educational and social initiatives in line with the charity’s objectives.
