# **Annual report and unaudited financial statements Financial Year 31[st] March 2020-30[st] March 2021** **Charity no.** 1177405 **Friends of Highgate Roman Kiln (FOHRK) Annual Report 2020-2021** ## **Annual Report The Friends of Highgate Roman Kiln** The Friends of Highgate Roman Kiln (FOHRK) was registered by the Charity Commission as a CIO (charity no. 1177405) on 25[th] February 2018. Its object: To advance the education of the public in all aspects of the second century AD Romano-British pottery kiln and factory excavated in Highgate Wood and in particular, by supporting the charitable work of Bruce Castle Museum, the owner of the Roman pottery kiln excavated in the Wood, and the City of London, owner of the Wood, in returning the kiln to the wood for its display, preservation, study and interpretation for the public benefit The Trustees Catherine West MP (chair) Charlie Andrew Michael Hammerson FSA Nick Peacey MBE (secretary) Harvey Sheldon Trustees are appointed for three years in the first instance. ## **Our partners** We have been grateful to partners for their assistance during this difficult year. Bob Warnock, Jonathan Meares and Rebecca Harrison of the Open Spaces Team of the City of London, and Deborah Hedgecock, Curator of the Bruce Castle Museum, London Borough of Haringey, helped with advice and practical and financial support. Partnership with Duncan Hooson and Claire West of Clayground Collective ensured that all our work with ceramics was high quality, engaging and innovative. 2 **Friends of Highgate Roman Kiln (FOHRK) Annual Report 2020-2021** ## **The year in focus** We started 2020 well with a positive response to an initial ‘Expression of Interest’ sent to the National Lottery Heritage Fund (NLHF) and some excellent consultations about what people might want to see and do as part of this project. Then Covid 19 hit everything and our priorities had to change. Our funding applications to the NLHF and other organisations had to be put on hold, not least because NLHF prioritised heritage organisations which needed financial support to survive. Trustees learned to continue their development work in online meetings, for instance in relation to reviewing the risk register in June 2020. During the year we were delighted to welcome Charlie Andrew from Classics for All as a trustee of FOHRK. Charlie had been involved with our project for some time, advising on learning opportunities for schools. She also led on the creation and implementation of a most successful pilot project ‘Clay Club’ run with Greig City Academy and the Clayground Collective. She has brought a wealth of experience and contacts with her, as well as her passion for all things classical and educational. (Classics for All supports state schools across the UK in introducing or developing the learning of classical subjects.) In response to the limitations of lockdown Charlie Andrew developed and trialled a small-scale online version of the Clay Club (Clay Club 2). Clay was delivered to the home of participating students. They then learned how to make pots as they followed an online course at home. The programme won high praise in evaluations. Home potting in Clay Club 2 Thanks largely to the liaison work of our trustee Michael Hammerson, the Haringey Design and Heritage consultation resulted in an expansion of the Highgate Archaeological Priority Area whereby the Haringey part of the old Bishop's Park now designates the Roman pottery manufacturing area as a Tier 1 priority, the rest of the wood and Queen's Wood in Tier 2, and the rest of the Park in Tier 3. This is a significant step forward for our programme: it positions our initiative to return the Highgate Kiln to the Wood as an enterprise justifiably promoting an archaeological site with the highest national priority as a heritage showpiece and source of community engagement and learning. Since the charity’s formation, trustees had agreed the need for a website to tell FOHRK’s story and explain its ambitions. The site was commissioned from Steve Beeston of Brass Tacks Web Design and was complete by the end 3 **Friends of Highgate Roman Kiln (FOHRK) Annual Report 2020-2021** of March 2021. Trustees and visitors are delighted with the result and grateful to Steve and our consultant, Helen, for the huge amount of detailed work involved and their care in building trustees’ aspirations into the site design. We are also grateful to local photographer, Jeff Overs, for generously allowing us use without charge of his beautiful photographs of the Wood. One of them appears on the site’s homepage. By the end of the financial year, trustees and partners felt confident enough to plan for the launch of a major crowdfunding appeal, together with the launch of an online pottery learning programme for July 2021. A year which had begun so bleakly ended with encouraging shoots of growth for the Friends of Highgate Roman Kiln. Accounting Policies** ## **a) Basis of preparation** The financial statements have been prepared under the historical cost convention and in accordance with applicable accounting standards. They follow the recommendations in the statement of recommended practice Accounting and Reporting by Charities (issued in March 2005). ## **b) Income** Grants are credited to income when receivable. ## **c) Expenses** Expenses are recognised in the period when they are incurred. ## **d) Restricted funds** These are grants received for specific purposes. Expenses incurred for these purposes are charged to the restricted fund. ## **2. Staff costs** The charity has no employees. ## **3.
