several projects, including:
Subsidies for IVDD screening – 50 dogs
were screened in 2021, helping to reduce
the risk of breeding dogs with back
disease. This screening programme was
adopted formally by the Kennel Club in
2021 and they are also offering subsidies.
These subsidies reduce the net cost to an
owner to £110.
Our health website
(www.dachshundhealth.org.uk) had
196,000 visitors in 2021, up from 85,500 in
2020 (29,000 in 2019 and 11,000 in 2018).
191,000 people visited our IVDD website
and we had 9945 members in our IVDD
Facebook Support Group. Our Instagram
account increased its followers to over
1500 and is managed by Christine Bessio,
a volunteer in the USA.
During 2021, we also published new
infographics including advice on illegal
imports, bitches in season and the results
of the 2021 DachsLife survey.
We continued our support of a project with
Cambridge University Vet School to
investigate the diagnosis and recovery of
Dachshunds suffering from IVDD. We ran
an online webinar with them in April 2021
and shared the educational resources
online.
The main opportunities to engage with
Dachshund buyers and owners were via
our social media channels and at Discover
Dogs which was held in London in
November. This event was organised by
the Southern Dachshund Association, and
we are grateful to all the volunteers who
took their dogs over the 2 days. The breed
booths were decorated with new posters
and banners (designed by our Trustee Gill
Key) and we were delighted to hear they
were awarded 2nd prize in the breed booth
competition.

Financial Review
Review of the charity’s
financial position at the end
of the period		 Para 1.21 Following registration as a charity in 2018,
the organisation inherited a total of £28,762
comprising both Restricted and Unrestricted
funds from the existing Breed Council Health
Fund. Upon incorporation a new bank
account was set up.
During 2021, a number of grants were made
to individuals whilst total funds at the 31st
December 2021 were £26,248 of which
£3,709 are restricted.
Our major grants made during 2021 were
£10,000 to the Cambridge IVDD research
project. The final grant of £5,000 for this
project will be made in 2022.
We continue to have a range of dachshund
owners who raise funds for us on a regular
basis, particularly around the Christmas
holidays.
Dachshund Breed Clubs are also donors
and we gratefully acknowledge their support
and that of their members.

ANNUAL REPORT OF THE TRUSTEES

FOR THE PERIOD ENDED 31[ST] DECMEBER 2021

History & Objectives

Charitable status was obtained on 2[nd] March 2020 for an organisation that had previously existed as a specific subcommittee of the Dachshund Breed Council for the promotion and research of health matters.

The public benefit of the charity is to prevent cruelty and suffering of the Dachshund Breed through advancing education of the public at large in the care and treatment of Dachshunds, thereby promoting humane behaviour towards Dachshunds. The charity will seek funding to support education and research into diseases and heredity disorders and provide a means of disseminating the useful results of such research amongst the public generally.

These objectives will be met from fundraising activities to support grants to appropriate individuals and organisations and by providing advice and advocacy in respect of the Dachshund breed.

A committee of Trustees volunteer their time and during the period comprised:-

Financial Review

Activities during the year saw an increase in total funds to £26,248, of which £3,709 are restricted, notwithstanding the national Covid-19 restrictions. The balance of funds from the Genome Project was transfer to General Fund during the year.

The charity’s trustees consider that an audit is not required for this year under section 144 of the Charities Act 2011 (the Charities Act) and an independent examination is needed.

My examination was carried out in accordance with the General Directions given by the Charity Commissioners. An examination includes a review of the accounting records kept by the charity and a comparison of the accounts presented with those records. It also includes consideration of any unusual items or disclosures in the accounts, and seeking explanations from you as trustees concerning any such matters. The procedures undertaken do not provide all the evidence that would be required in an audit, and consequently the report is limited to those matters set out in the statement below.

1. Accounting Policies

Basis of Preparation of Accounts

The financial statements are prepared under the historical cost convention with items recognised at cost or transaction value unless otherwise stated. The accounts have been prepared in accordance with the Statement of Recommended Practice:

Accounting and Reporting Charities in accordance with the Financial Reporting Standard applicable in the UK FRS 102 and with the Charities Act 2011.

Income

Voluntary income and donations are accounted for as received by the charity. The income from fundraising ventures is shown gross, with the associated cost included in fundraising costs.

Liabilities

Liabilities are recognised where it is more likely than not that there is a legal or constructive obligation committing the charity to make a payment and that such obligation can be measured with reasonable certainty.

Value Added Tax

Value added tax is not recoverable by the charity, and as such is included in the relevant costs in the Statement of Financial Activities.
