The Mary Sunley Canal Boat Trust

Report of the Trustees for the year 2023

Once again it is my pleasure to present the Trustees report for the year to 31st December 2023.

After the disruption over the last number of years caused by the Covid pandemic, 2023 saw us finally get back to normality, not requiring any special measures.

During the year we did a total of 154 paid trips, taking a total of 1752 guests, with the

numbers finally getting back to pre covid levels, and we are still encouraged to see how most of our long standing customers have come back to enjoy their days on the water, even though the weather left a lot to be desired over the season.

We were very sad to hear of the death of John Wallace. He was a long standing member of the Trust, and it was his skills that kept the Mary Sunley 1 going for so many years. He was also instrumental in the design and build of the Mary Sunley 2, and headed up the training for a number of years. He will be sadly missed

We have welcomed a number of new volunteers, and will be trying to find more in the coming months, so anyone with friends or relatives who you think may like to join the crew, please contact our Secretary.

We have already opened the bookings for the 2024 season, and we are encouraged by the number of bookings already received. We are in a fortunate financial position to be able to keep the prices the same for another year, as we do not want to disadvantage certain groups who may find the cost to be prohibitive

Although we have had small technical issues with the boat, these are to be expected due to its age, and we are realising how important it is to carry out regular preventative maintenance to ensure the reliability of the Mary Sunley, and our thanks to everyone who has helped in keeping the boat ship shape

We were also pleased to be able to get back to our customary social events, and our thanks go to Sue and Trevor for once again organising such a splendid evening with their barbecue, and the Chinese at the Beijing. We are in the throws of organising a start of season bash at NCCC, and remind you to keep the evening of 25th April free.

I extend sincere thanks to my fellow Trustees and committee members for their commitment and enthusiastic support. All make a real contribution to the success of the trust. A number of us have been trustees for many years, and we are mindful of requiring new blood and ideas, so if anyone is interested in becoming a trustee, please get in touch. And finally, a big thank you to all our splendid volunteers for your commitment, enthusiasm, and humour. Thank you.

Andy Altree - Chairman March 2024
