Section D Achievements and performance

Summary of the main achievements of the charity during the year

Covid-19 meant that the Bowls Club had to close for long spells during three separate lockdowns in this financial year which ended on 29 March 2021. During the periods when we did reopen for the playing of bowls, we adhered closely to the government advice on the need to maintain a Covid-secure environment. We were able to do this only with the help of government Covid grants in our sector, supplemented by some smaller grants from Sports England. Our grant income totalled some £28,000 and enabled us to carry forward an excess of income over expenditure into the next financial year as we came out of lockdown in March 2021.

We closed our bar and catering facilities during this financial year which resulted in a 96% fall in income from those sales, from ££9200 in the previous year to just £450 in this financial year. As with all other bowls clubs across the country, our membership numbers were also badly hit, falling by around 50% from 250 to 111. Overall excluding the grant income, the turnover was down 70% on the previous year whereas our costs only fell by around 30%.

With the Pavilion closed, grant money secured from local councillors enabled us to purchase some outdoor furniture to help facilitate some limited outdoor catering. Our aim was to encourage our existing Members to return to play (and to the consequential benefits, such as getting exercise and combating social isolation that belonging to a Bowls Club offers) as well as to tempt back those Members who had lost some of their confidence in going out.
