Good Health Africa contributes to the Agenda 2063 via its sustainable investment in key infrastructure, improved agriculture practices and better management of natural resources, providing access to quality education and health via the Donald Romeo Community School for which it has governance. The school is based in Museno, Khayega, of the Kakamega District (population: 69,502) in Western Kenya, East Africa assisting on average **330** students annually.

The testimony of a Kenyan who had gone to school naked due to abject poverty, haunted Elizabeth Romeo so much that she went to Kenya to see conditions for herself. What she saw moved her to start a small-scale, health ministry for children in 2004, operating as Donald Romeo Academy, a primary school, in one of the poorest parts of Western Kenya via Good Health for Africa company, which later changed to operate as a chartered incorporated institution (CIO) via the registered charity number **1177283** . It is a major undertaking and the Donald Romeo Community School under the governance of Good Health Africa aims to reduce poverty one area at a time.
With the assistance of individuals and partnering organisations, we aim to make a positive impact for generations to come, but to produce citizens capable of independent thought, who are committed to family and encouraged to contribute positively to their community. Participation in the school choir, clubs, after-school programs, enterprising activities, pathfinders, and various zoom events etc. allow students to develop vital skills to become successful in society. Vocational bible school summer camps also teach skills such as entrepreneurship, financial literacy and maths. Our supporters help us work with partner organisations to provide medical and mental health services to elementary and middle-school-aged children. Most of all the whole program aims to foster values such as integrity, mutual respect, solidarity and team work, courage, compassion and care for the environment.
Good Health Africa is also mindful that the General Assembly adopted the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, in September 2015, that includes **17** Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) which were built on the principle of “ _**leaving no one behind**_ ”, emphasising a holistic approach to achieving sustainable development for all. The Donald Romeo Community School provides support that looks at the whole person to promote their physical, emotional, social and spiritual well-being.

## **MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIR OF GoHA UK**
During 2021 the COVID crisis continued to impact all aspects” of GoHA’s activity. Fundraising was, predictably, one of the key elements directly affected by the pandemic. There was a fall in funds received from regular contributors, and a number of fundraising events had to be cancelled. But this was, for the most part, counterbalanced by a fourfold increase in the number of one-off donors, so that the overall reduction in monies received compared to 2020 was only £114.50 – a much smaller drop than had been feared.
The team overseeing the Donald Romeo Community School (DRCS) includes a very competent school head, the local school board, and GoHA trustees. With careful management of resources, the programme has expanded to include the construction of new boarding facilities – built from bricks made on site – which began in 2020. This building project is vital for the long-term viability of the school and progress continues, slowly but surely, as funds allow.
On the academic level, despite the loss of learning opportunities imposed by COVIDrelated closures, DRCS pupils did well in the national Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE) exams. Of the 30 pupils who sat the exams, the top four got between 393 and 404 points out of 500 (the top performer in the country had a score of 428 points), and 25 of the 30 scored above 300 which is well above the average pass mark.
However, academic performance is not the only form of excellence aimed at by DRCS. In 2021, teachers and pupils worked together on the school farm to attain food self-sufficiency – no mean achievement, given a school roll of 330, requiring two meals daily for day students and staff, plus extra meals for boarders. And although some activities, such as the prison ministry, had to be put on hold, where conditions permitted it, staff and students were also actively involved in different forms of community outreach (meals delivered to needy elderlies in the neighbourhood, visits to shut-ins, performances of the school choir in a variety of local events), as well as initiation into enterprise activities such as selling surplus vegetables and running a a simple school shop.
Efforts were made to maintain links with Hyland House Primary School (London), notably to pursue the Reading Room project, though this was hindered by technical difficulties on the DRCS side. Students, teachers and support also participated enthusiastically along with the Board of Trustees in Kenya and the GoHA UK Board in giving thanks to everyone who contributed to an on-line fundraising concert organised on their behalf. These initiatives were unquestionably, opportunities for DRCS pupils to have a taste of cultural exchange and cooperation on an international scale, expanding their view of the world. 2021 also saw the launching of the 1[st] Annual Black History month 5K Step Challenge Walk/Run to aid the delivery of its projects.
I am infinitely grateful to God as well as to supporters, sponsors, and actors within the project, hailing from Antigua, Kenya, Montserrat, the United Kingdom, the United States and elsewhere, whose generosity, integrity and creativity kept the Donald Romeo Community School going through a challenging but very rewarding year.

## **STRATEGIC REPORT**
This section of the Trustees’ Annual Report provides the information required by the The Charity Commission For England and Wales.
## **APPROACH AND AIMS**
Good Health Africa UK is a registered charity that raises funds to meet its objectives regarding development work in Kenya and the United Kingdom. Good Health Africa aims to reduce poverty in Kenya, currently the central local government area of focus which may be expanded at a later date. People who can benefit are children ages 4 – 13 years, with preference given to AIDS orphans, who were born and reside in Africa. This work is done in partnership with twinning schools located in the United Kingdom, the Caribbean or the United States of America.
Good Health Africa works with families, Kakamega local communities, partners and the government in Kenya to help every DRCS pupil realize their full potential. Orphans with the greatest need have priority.
## **VISION**
Our vision is to prevent and relieve poverty in Africa with our current focus on Kenya.
## **MISSION**
The Board of Directors in the United Kingdom govern and raise finance to support the vision of Good Health Africa. We partner with organisations and individuals in Antigua and Barbuda, Montserrat, the United States and the United Kingdom to accomplish our main objectives/goals which are mainly to provide:
- Education via the Donald Romeo Community School
- Health facilities (via clinic, etc.)
- Clean water for drinking and household purposes, and
- Developing the community for sustainability via agriculture, prison ministry, etc.
People who can benefit are children ages 4 – 13 years, with preference given to AIDS orphans, who were born and reside in Africa.
Kenya is currently the central local government area of focus at this time.

**SUMMARY of OUTCOMES IN 2021**
## 1. **RESOURCES TO MEET THE MISSION** :
In 2021, Good Health Africa UK received a total of £15,009.35 (£114.50 less than in 2020) in donations to help meet its goals.
This total sum was achieved through the generous support of our many individual supporters and partners, particularly:
- Committed givers: 15 individuals and 3 businesses contributed £5,536.40 decreased from 2020 but very useful for planning.
- Single one-off electronic donations ranging from £10 - £1,000 were received from 28 individuals and 1 business totalling £8,036.26 which reflects a significant increase from donations in 2020.
- Students at the annual Good Health Africa Day of the Antigua Seventh Day Adventist Twinning School could not contribute this year due to the ongoing pandemic.
- Similarly, students of Montserrat & Hampstead SDA were unable to support the cause during the ongoing pandemic.

## **2. TWINNING SCHOOL**
In 2021, the Donald Romeo Community School managed to embark upon a READING ROOM project via zoom with their twinning school in the United Kingdom, namely Hyland House Primary School in Tottenham, London.
## **PROMOTING**
The pandemic restricted promotions but a virtual concert was undertaken that raised awareness about the project yielding a few hundred pounds. The 1[st] Annual GoHA Black History month 5K Step Challenge Run/Walk was launched in October. Similarly, the yield was low but sensitized more persons to become engaged with the project.
Currently there were no gifts left to Good Health Africa UK in wills. However, continued promotions may some day achieve that goal.
## **3. VOLUNTEERS | PARTNERSHIPS**
Good Health Africa has benefitted significantly from contributions of volunteers too numerous to mention and is grateful to all. The continued support of its bankers Barclays Bank PLC is significant. Also, the committed support of The New Life Assembly – Hackney branch under the leadership of Rev. Dr Ruthlyn Bradshaw as well as Praise and Fellowship Christian Centre under the leadership of Pastor Ambrose is deeply appreciated.
Pastor Vili Costescu continues to be a great support for the project. His support has been consistent throughout. Staff and students of the Antigua Seventh Day Adventist church that consistently desire to raise funds via its annual Good Health Africa Day are key to the sustainability of the project.

## **ACTIVITIES & ACHIEVEMENTS IN 2021**
## **1. EDUCATION**
The students of DRCS supports are, **for the vast majority, below the poverty line,** which is a constant challenge. In addition to emergencies such as bereavement, domestic issues, tropical diseases such as malaria and jiggers as well as hunger and under nutrition at times threaten their coping skills and development potential.
Good Health Africa UK committed **80%** of its donated resources to help 276 of its children caught in emergencies in 2021. As a result, orphans in Kakamega who depend on handouts for food, uniform & school fees requested admission to the Donald Romeo Community School for the upcoming academic school year.

Even our lowest scoring candidate ALLAN CHUMBA scored **261** marks which is above the 250 pass mark.
Mean score of Donald Romeo Community School students in 2019 was **333.00** and the top performer got 404 points as compared to the national top performing score of 428.
Performance levels in 2021 had a positive deviation of 11. The number of those who scored above 300 marks out of the obvious 500 were 25 out of 30 candidates. The improvement was realized as a result of good cooperation and team work among teachers.

## **SAFEGUARDING CHILDREN & STAFF**
## **CHAPLAINCY, GUIDANCE AND COUNSELLING**
The Chaplain is a member in the guidance and counselling committee which is chaired by the Deputy Headteacher. The chaplain always took time with cases forwarded to her by teachers. Chronic cases were always handled by the disciplinary committee. Learners with personal problems approached her in person for counselling and those in fear of facing her could write notes and place them in the suggestion box. This in turn resulted in general counselling sessions held once per week. Staff with personal problems or problems with administrators also sought her for guidance.
For this year there has been a general guiding and counselling session in a fortnight on general issues affecting the school as a family.

## **NEW GATE HOUSE** for enhanced security.
## **BOOK DAY**
The COVID 19 pandemic, coupled with the new curriculum whereby books are provided by the government to all public schools, meant that it was difficult for the school to carry out the book harvesting session. We have hence been compelled to purchase the basic course books as we also advise parents to support where possible.
## **DEBATING**
The DEBATING club was organized basically for classes four up to class eight. The afterschool activity was held after evening classes every Thursday. We used to interchange the

competition alternating among classes, boys versus girls and a general one where all learners can choose to be opposers or proposers. We used to alternate between English debates and Kiswahili ones (Mjadala). It was mandatory for Language and Social Studies teachers to attend to give directions to learners. We wished to have inter-school competitions but were unable to do so due to short terms as a result of the COVID 19 pandemic. The debates are a great boost to expression, confidence, language use, talent discovery, information update, etc.
## **ENTERPRISE ACTIVITIES**
The enterprise activities for the year involved the following:

4. School “pop-shop” managed by the Pathfinders

## **PATHFINDERS**
Pathfinders is a club that involves all pupils split into various levels as follows:
1. Eager beavers 1-3 years

3. Pathfinders 8-13 years
4. Ambassadors 14-17 years
The club was unable to send any representatives to the camporee held in 2021. This was due to financial constraints. The Pathfinder choir meets every Friday for practices, drills and marching.
Also, the choir was used as a tool of spreading the Good News within the community especially at funerals whenever a neighbor of the school passed on. Its activities especially the marching and singing has attracted many local children. The club was and still is led by teacher Joseph Andaye.

The Pathfinders learnt to be enterprising because the club ran small businesses in school selling stationery, bread and tea meals to pupils. By end of the year the club raised 27,000 Kenya shillings which was less than previous years as a result of having short terms following the pandemic.
They were also involved in growing vegetables sold to members of staff.
## **PARENT TEACHER ASSOCIATION**
Though initially inactive, the PTA was revived in 2021 with Mr. Caloleshas Shisama as its chair person. It has a membership of 14 persons comprised of three teachers and eleven parents (each class is represented by a parent) inclusive of four members of the Board of Management: chaplain, headteacher, deputy head teacher and senior teacher.
We had one meeting in term three with the main agendum of knowing one another and setting dates for the succeeding meetings.
## **SCHOOL CHOIR**
The school Choir is comprised of all willing members of staff and some of our church members. The choir performed for parents whenever an occasion presented itself in the school. The choir also sang in funerals whenever a member of the school community and or the general community was bereaved. The school choir was among participants in a music extravaganza organized by the union in Homabay one of the counties in Kenya.
We dream of audio recording at the right time when funds become available.
## **SEWING**
This was initiated by the Pathfinders club. It has long been a school policy that every pupil should learn basic sewing skills, and be able to carry out minor repairs, which interestingly the new government curriculum includes Home science as a compulsory subject and tailoring is now one of the key topics offered in schools. In this area, the Donald Romeo Community School has been forward thinking.
## **SPORTS DAY**
This is a programme carried out every Wednesday after classes. There have been a variety of interclass competitions in sports like soccer, athletics and other ball games.
The school is unable to engage in inter-school competitions as these events often take place during weekends which is inconvenient for the school.

## **VACATIONAL BIBLE SCHOOL**
In 2021 this activity was substituted with camp-out. It was attended by 30 boarders and 70 children from the community, all of whom were awarded certificates at the end.
## **2. HEALTH FACILITIES (CLINIC, ETC.)**
It is the aspiration of Good Health Africa to acquire and operate a fully functional clinic in the future. Currently the government of Kenya sends nurses to the Donald Romeo Community School to give lectures on health and inoculate students. Independent of the government the Donald Romeo Community School provided mosquito nets and malaria tablets to its students free of charge. Staff ensured that students had two meals per day and maintained personal hygiene (bathed, cleaned their teeth, cleaned their uniforms, and combed their hair, etc.)
Good Health Africa supplied an t i- malaria tablets for students protecting them and their families.
During school time great care is taken with sanitation in order to prevent the transmission of contagious diseases. In 2021, Good Health Africa supported training delivered be the government officials on health-related matters.
For 2021, we received clinical officers sent by the government who vaccinated the whole staff and pupils above fifteen years for COVID 19.
They also carried out a deworming exercise for all.
Future plans to have a clinic that can serve the children and surrounding community will be outlined in the upcoming preparation of the Five-Year Development Plan (strategic report).
## **UK, USA & CARIBBEAN SUPPORT FOR THE CHILDREN OF DRCS**
In 2019 generous donations from supporters enabled Good Health Africa UK to raise £17,2823 for the children of DRCS.
## **3. CLEAN WATER FOR DRINKING & HOUSEHOLD PURPOSES**

Members of the community continue to have free 24-hour access to water from a spring on Donald Romeo Community School (DRCS) property.
The water is collected and used for drinking, bathing and laundry. It is our wish to drill a borehole that can serve the school and community. Meanwhile, the school has installed a 3,000 litre tank, which is currently in use, though insufficient.
## **4. DEVELOPING THE COMMUNITY FOR SUSTAINABILITY**
## **AGRICULTURE:**
The agricultural farming project produced enough food to feed the students for the entire school year. Vegetables such as maize (staple food), beans, cabbage (including long foot cabbage), spinach, peas etc. were grown by the teachers and students under the supervision of the school gardener, Mr. Francis. A banana orchard also yielded fruit for consumption. The maize was taken to the mill to be ground into cornmeal (maize meal) to make delicious meals such as corn-meal porridge for breakfast, fungi referred to as ugali (a kind of polenta/fungi) for lunch & dinner combined with other vegetables grown on the school farm. Student participants gained skills in farming as they engaged in planting and weeding activities. Napier grass was also planted to feed the cows versus rather than buying it at the market.

Milk gained from milking the cows (donated by Mr. & Mrs. David Lea of Montserrat) was used in preparation of porridge and the balance was sold. Fish was also farmed and harvested for sale. Madame Miriam conducted a rearing chicken classroom activity.
## **PRISON SERVICES**
For years the school has been a key supporter of prison ministry. For 2021 however, because of the COVID pandemic this ministry, which is very close to the heart of the school, was temporarily suspended.
