This last year has been one of recovery and rediscovery for the world and for our church. Chris Lee has now been with the parish for seven years and continues to lead us well through these interesting times. With the pandemic slowly lifting, we went back into our church space following an extended period online. We learnt a lot in this time about our worship and our commitment to Christ and to St Saviour’s Church. We want to thank all our church members, as well as those who have given time and service, in supporting not only our church but our whole parish in these last 12 months. ## **1. VICAR’S REPORT** ## **The church** **1.1 Return to physical church** – We have successfully returned to our church building following the lifting of lockdown rules. Our return prioritised the safety of the congregation, at first having communion only once a month and in one kind, not sharing the peace and wearing masks in church. We have now returned to a completely normal service style while still respecting those who wish to wear masks or maintain a degree of distance while in church. We have communion every week now unless we have a baptism, and we receive in both kinds. We have only one service at 10am and integrate a liturgical style with a more open, charismatic style. We are still finding our identity as a church since returning, but we are holding both a sacramental and a charismatic attitude. Our return to the building has led to a lot of letting go and picking up of practices which can put an increased stress on our teams. Special thanks go to our Churchwarden Simon Jenkins and our Children and Families Worker Lauren Mckenna, who have risen to the challenge in a sterling way. **1.2 Worship team** – Led by Grace Park, our worship team has been amazing, moving out of the pandemic and Zoom into live, in-person worship in an exceptional way. We are so blessed to have such a great team, which is growing. We want to give a huge thank you to all members of the worship team in their commitment to meet and practise each week, and their continued efforts to lead our sung worship and bless our church community. **1.3 Zoom services** – During a good proportion of the year, we continued weekly worship via services conducted on the Zoom online video platform. We saw good numbers each week, including regular attendance by people outside our local community, in places as far afield as Germany, France, Lebanon and Brazil. After resuming physical worship in the church building, we attempted to run a hybrid service, which involved live streaming during worship. But sadly, technical issues, as well as lack of human resources, meant that we had to discontinue the live stream. We were 4 Registered Charity Number: 1177239 reluctant to do this, since it meant losing touch with our extended Zoom congregation, but we have committed ourselves to concentrating on in-person, local community. **1.4 Tuesday morning prayer** – has been replaced with Tuesday evening Compline. This is an opportunity to have some silence and stillness in a busy week and a loud city. The service, which has seen good numbers, runs from 7.45 to 8.15pm. **1.5 Young Franciscans** – The Young Franciscans group still meets on a Monday, but since returning from sabbatical, Chris felt that leading the group on top of his other ministries was too much. Paul Alexander, a friend of Chris and a founding member of the Young Franciscans, has agreed to host and lead going forward. **1.6. Home groups** – We started running home groups at the beginning of the year. The impetus for this was the desire to have more opportunities for personal growth, and to develop smaller, more intimate communities within the overall community of St Saviour’s. We currently have five home groups. The groups run independently of each other, and have developed their own ways of doing community and growing in faith. **1.7 Helping Hand Fund** – St Saviour’s is at the heart of Wendell Park, and looks to be a source of blessing to the wider community. Some 12,000 people live in the parish, and due to the pandemic and the cost of living crisis, many have found themselves out of jobs and entering into a greater level of poverty. The Helping Hand Fund has raised thousands of pounds, and we want to thank the many generous donors who have contributed. See our accounts for more information. The money has come in and gone out to various sources. ## **My other work** **1.8 Writing and social media** – I am currently working on two books with Jenny, which will be produced by Tyndale Publishing House, based in the US. I’m grateful to St Saviour’s for supporting my social media and writing projects, while appreciating my rootedness in our church. **1.9 Sabbatical** – I had a sabbatical this year (February to April) as I had been in ministry for 10 years. I was ordained deacon in 2007 and priest in 2011. During my time away, the church was led by Simon Jenkins, Churchwarden, and Cheryl Freeman, curate of St Stephen’s, Shepherd’s Bush. JUNIOR CHURCH REPORT** Since the last APCM in March 2021, there have been a few developments to the children’s ministry at St Saviours Church. We have officially changed the name of the children’s ministry to ‘kids church’ and have fully reverted to sessions back in church. 5 Registered Charity Number: 1177239 ## **2.1 Kids church Sunday services** Due to numbers of both children and volunteers for kids’ team we have been forming as one group, using the church hall as a base. Our team currently consists of 4 teachers and 5 volunteer helpers. We begin our service with children in the main church for the initial prayer and first worship song that is aimed towards children. After this we move through into the hall for our sessions. ## **2.2 Planning** 2021 2022 Since the last APCM we have learnt lots in kids’ church. Our planning structure is continually evolving as the children grow spiritually and in understanding. This new planning template gives structure to the session but allows the teacher to have some flexibility with the activity. There is more focus on scripture with each story having a key skill linked with the teaching question. ## **2.3 Special events** We have provided some special events for children since the last APCM. These included our annual light party, Christingle and Eastingle. A huge thanks to the kids’ team, worship team and other members of the congregation that have been involved in these events. Our Eastingle service had low numbers of children but everyone in attendance enjoyed the service and feedback on the content was good. ## _Lauren McKenna_ _Children and Families Worker_ 6 Registered Charity Number: 1177239 ## **3. CHURCHWARDENS’ REPORT** ## **3.1 The church fabric** The Churchwardens, ably assisted by our Administrator, Yew Ming, have worked to ensure that the church property and our operating systems are in all good order, and that when repairs are needed (e.g. water leaks and breakages), they happen quickly and satisfactorily. We believe this has been achieved throughout the past 12 months. All our usual mandatory inspections and servicing, including gas boilers, fire extinguishers, the roof and gutters, and portable electrical appliances, have been completed. ## **3.2 Quinquennial Inspection** Early in the year (April 2021), our church building and grounds had their Quinquennial (‘five-yearly’) Inspection to check their condition and establish any repairs needed. We were very pleased when St Saviour’s passed the inspection without any issues of substance requiring follow up. ## **3.3 Parish Secretary and Church Administrator** Yew Ming, our new Parish Secretary and Church Administrator, started working for us in December when our previous administrator, Judaline Goon, retired. Ming was especially helpful during Chris’s sabbatical, which required a lot of teamwork, attention to detail, and coordination of church groups. We’d like to thank her for her patience, good sense, and hard work during this time. ## **3.4 The Upper Room lease** During the year, we agreed a renewed lease with The Upper Room, which will cover the next 12 years. We’re very grateful to Simon Tuke and the trustees for all the work they put into making this possible, and we’re very pleased to renew our commitment to and relationship with The Upper Room and the essential work they do. ## **3.5 Communications** During the year, we’ve continued to send out our weekly email newsletter via the Mailchimp platform. The emails include details of services and kids’ church, plus news and special events. New people joined the mailing list throughout the year, which currently numbers 238 subscribers. We have also maintained our WhatsApp group, SSWP Connect, for chat, news, prayer, and Zoom links. The group currently has 75 participants. ## **3.6 Donkey Sunday** With the relaxing of some Covid restrictions in May 2021, we were able to hold a Donkey Sunday in Wendell Park at half term, on 30 May. This was brilliantly organised, as with our previous community events, by Johnny Wright, and was very well attended by local families on a very sunny and hot day. 7 Registered Charity Number: 1177239 ## **3.7 GDPR issue** Early in May, we encountered a GDPR problem when our online email account sent a number of emails received by our Administrator to a limited number of church members and church contacts. With the help of our IT consultant, we were able to contain the problem, and contacted those whose data had been shared. We have since replaced the office computer with a newer laptop and upgraded our email and virus software. ## **3.8 Thank you** We would like to offer heartfelt thanks to the following, in no particular order: To Johnny Wright, who stepped down as Churchwarden in November. We are hugely grateful to Johnny for the big things he organised, including the community events in Wendell Park, the renewal of The Upper Room lease, and handling the Quinquennial Inspection, but also for the detailed, unglamorous work of looking after the nuts and bolts of the church for several years. To Jenny Lee, who expertly covered for our Administrator during the year when she was on leave, and also for the marvels she’s worked on the new church garden, which looks so brilliant at the moment. To everyone who helps make Sundays happen at St Saviour’s – our welcome team, those who do readings and prayers, everyone who helps provide coffee and tea, and our tech team, who look after sound and vision during services, and who also worked hard during the year to stream our services. Chris has already thanked our worship team, but a big thank you from us, too! To Lizzie Kendal and Eva Jeffrey for their critically important work in safeguarding, especially during the time when we were streaming services. And to Deborah Down for looking after the electoral roll. To Elea Huston, for being our quietly efficient treasurer during the year, for looking after our books and keeping the wheels turning. We’re so grateful to Elea for looking after this essential side of the life of St Saviour’s, and giving so much time and commitment to it. To Lauren McKenna, for all the creative work she’s put into kids’ church this year, and for everyone who has helped in the children’s team during the year. We are so grateful to have Lauren’s educational gifts at the service of the church, and for the way she has found great ways to integrate the children into our services. And finally, to Chris, our Vicar, for his positive, pastoral and inspiring leadership, and for leading us in such a flexible and innovative way through an often-challenging year. ELECTORAL ROLL REPORT** The electoral roll is like a membership list for St Saviour’s and carries with it the entitlement to vote at the APCM. After this annual meeting, we have to tell the Church of England the number on the roll. Although we do publicise about joining the roll in the lead-up to the annual meeting, members can join at any time. Anyone who lives in the parish, or who has been worshipping with St Saviour’s for six months, is welcome to contact me on Deborah.down@btinternet.com to be added to the roll. I can also advise people on whether or not they live in the parish – although it makes no difference to St Saviour’s whether you do or not, it is just something that we have to include in our return to the Church of England! Last year there were 76 members on the roll, and this year we have grown to 79. While this sounds modest, we do in fact have 11 new members, while eight people have moved away. Of the 79, 44 live in the parish and 35 outside the parish. We offer a big welcome to the new members. A lot of church members have moved house in the last year.
