The Friends of Rotherham Music

Report of the trustees for the year ending 31st May 2023

Our Aims

We aim to support musical learning in Rotherham by supporting the work of Rotherham Music Hub by financial contributions when requested. This support can be for a group or an individual and is decided on by the trustees and voting members of the CIO when appropriate.

Our Objectives

To help young people, but not exclusively, pupils of Rotherham Music through education and leisure activities and to engage with the wider arts to develop their capabilities and grow to full maturity as positive individuals and members of society.

Our key objectives for the year were the same as the previous one:

Review of activities and achievements

The Friends of Rotherham Music has continued to function as a group. The current balance of the Friends charity account is £10,679.93. We have raised £535.08 the bulk of which was raised at the Christmas concert and through a recent donation following the death of a supporter of Rotherham Music. At the last AGM the current body of Friends and trustees jointly decided to step down after many years of service.

Community Service

By continuing to support musical learning and activities in Rotherham we are benefitting the wider community. Our support continues to enable musical learning in the Town. Young people who have been learning an instrument gain patience and perseverance, responsibility, self-esteem, better reading skills, exposure to other cultures, coordination, maths skills, self-expression, increases memory abilities and aids social skills.

Aims and objectives for next year

The main objectives for next year are to forge closer links to the music service as one of the aims is to enable Rotherham Music to be able to access funding via bidding through the charity. The chair of The Friends of Rotherham Music had a meeting with the head of Rotherham Music last year to discuss this and the future of the charity.

The other objectives will also apply i.e.:

The Friends numbers have been dwindling over the past couple of years and we haven’t had any new members. We have some amazing supporters who always help to raise money at music events, and it is much appreciated. I indicated at the last meeting that I wished to step down as chair. As a charity we need a minimum of three trustees and there are now three people willing to join. The bank account will need to be transferred to the new members.
