The Friends of Rotherham Music

Report of the trustees for the year ending 31st July 2021

Our Aims

We aim to support musical learning in Rotherham by supporting the work of Rotherham Music Hub by financial contributions when requested. This support can be for a group or an individual and is decided on by the trustees and voting members of the CIO when appropriate.

Our Objectives

To help young people in particular, but not exclusively, pupils of Rotherham Music through education and leisure activities and to engage with the wider arts to develop their capabilities and grow to full maturity as positive individuals and members of society.

Our key objectives for the year were the same as the previous one:

Review of activities and achievements

The Friends of Rotherham Music has continued to function as a group. The Friends supported music in Rotherham following funding requests totalling £496.40 during this period. One request was to support a student in difficult circumstances to be able to join Orchestras for All by covering the subscription cost. Another request the Friends responded to was to support the cost of flights to Germany as a talented young musician was asked to represent Rotherham at a celebratory concert. The Friends spent £1341.70 and raised £1612.76 throughout this period. Like everyone else in 2020 we have been unable to meet and function as usual with music lessons, music centre and concerts going online following the national lockdown.

Community Service

By continuing to support musical learning and activities in Rotherham we are benefitting the wider community. Our support continues to enable musical learning in the Town. The young people who have been learning an instrument gain patience and perseverance, responsibility, self esteem, better reading skills, exposure to other cultures, coordination, maths skills, self expression, increases memory abilities and aids social skills.

Aims and objectives for next year

The main objectives for next year are to re launch the Friends of Rotherham Music and forge closer links to the music service as one of the aims is to enable Rotherham Music to be able to access funding via bidding through the charity. The chair of The Friends of Rotherham Music had an online meeting with the head of Rotherham Music last year to discuss this. The other objectives will also apply i.e:

Providing that current restrictions due to corona virus will have been fully lifted before the Autumn term begins, the aim will be to have a renewing of the Friends by contacting parents/carers and holding a meeting for the Friends, the trustees, Rotherham Music and the wider music community in Rotherham.
