## Friends Of Fulwell Annual return 20/21
We would like to say a massive thank you for the support you have shown. FOF aims to help the local residents of Fulwell come together by giving local people the support to address local priorities and issues. The project aims to:
- Increase the number of activities for young people
- Develop new volunteer groups to enable more volunteer opportunities and give better support to volunteers.
- Help support groups in funding bids and attracting funding.
- Improve peopleʼs health both physically and mentally
- Reach out to the most vulnerable in the Fulwell ward including the socially isolated.
- Improve the local environment including Cut Throat Dene, local beaches and green space in the Fulwell ward.
## **Report:**
March 13th 2020 our lives were changed forever when lockdown was introduced through the Covid-19 pandemic. 2 weeks later, councilor Margaret Beck had suddenly passed away due to Covid-19 and this really hit home, how tragic things were. Everything stopped, everything we were working towards stopped. We were unable to provide anything. Then as the Covid-19 pandemic continued, we were asked to become a community hub for the Fulwell ward.
We adapted at lightning pace and recruited 30 volunteers with the help of Sunderland City Council who really supported our community as we helped residents with food shopping, prescription pickups, dog walking and anything else that was needed. We were then suddenly a vital service to the community. Unfortunately, this went on for the remainder of the raising aspirations project and through that time we have lost at least six people to the Covid-19 pandemic which has been quite difficult to deal with, but nevertheless we continued our work.
We arranged a lot of activities online for young people and sign posted people to services in the area. We continued to receive referrals from Sunderland City Council and made sure we did our utmost to help people. By this time we had a strong cohort of volunteers and we could handle many referrals, making sure everybody was looked after to the best of our ability. This support went on right throughout until July 2020, when things were relaxed and we could re-engage with young people, who had missed so much school.
We now had a mix of responsibilities looking after residents whilst trying to re-engage with young people and provide a good service. This was difficult as we tried to balance everything.
So, for example at any one time we could receive a call asking for support while at the same time trying to deliver activities for young people, keeping everybody safe.
This support continued right the way through up until the winter of 2020 when unbelievably we were put in another lockdown. We then had to go back to doing what we were doing previously engaging volunteers to help the community. However, this proved much more difficult this time as people either returned to work or were scared of the virus because this time the virus seemed a lot more prevalent and dangerous to people's health. It was then up to ourselves to try to keep positive and keep doing the best we could for our community. Thankfully we managed to get through the winter.
Over the period of winter 2020, we delivered a huge amount of activity packs and hampers for people of all ages. This was supported also by large scale food banks that we arranged along with local traders, Sainsbury's and Morrisons who were very supportive. We arranged Christmas cards and carol singing for those who were socially isolated and worked with local schools to do Christmas card exchanges which proved very popular. We did anything we could to keep people's spirits up.
Lockdown continued into 2021 and we continued to support our community along with Fulwell library who were very supportive and we built great relationships with partners in the area and across the North of Sunderland.
We continued the youth club which was now online where we delivered online quizzes every week, something which I never won. The uncertainty of the future was so difficult for us to plan any events going forward things changed by the minute. We were forever having to be adaptive in everything we've done. It was the most challenging of times.Thankfully at this time the vaccine was now available to many and we made sure we signposted people to use it.
Our year ended on March 31st 2021 and we were still very much in the midst of this pandemic and being reactive and responding to help people in our community.
