Recruitment:

Through our annual General Meetings, all members are informed of requirements for positions or help needed to run the organisation. We ask anyone willing to volunteer in certain areas to come forward and help the committee. After this stage, the Trustees take responsibility for scrutinising anyone to serve and those who pass through this process start to assist. For long term positions, we process the DBS through a registered Umbrella body. However, we were told by the DBS office if someone has an Enhanced DBS in his or her current position it is okay to just have a look at that, because members are being charged by the Umbrella registered bodies for the service, yet they have paid the annual updated services with the DBS and yet we as an organisation do not qualify to process the DBS by ourselves. For our short-term volunteers we normally get references from our members and the general public by writing or sending out emails.

Achievements for the Organisation in our Fifth anniversary as a Charity:

Community relief grant:

Realising the impact, the Covid 19 pandemic had on our community UMCManchester Twale applied for another funding from Forever Manchester of (GBP 10,000) to help support our beneficiaries, many of whom were going through tough times. With this funding, we managed to secure food items and other groceries which were purchased and delivered to community members’ residential addresses in two different drops first one was on 23 May 2023 a week before Eid al Ftr and another on the 17[th] December 2022. Ramathan community weekly Darasa’s or meetings:

During this period, we increase our supplications and usually meet every week to learn more about our religion and also interact socially as a community every Saturday during the blessed month of Ramathan. The aim of these sessions is to encourage the Muslims members in our community to keep remembering their beliefs and learn more about the deen.

UMC UK sports day:

Held on 18/05/2022 at the Excel Leisure Centre in Coventry. The purpose was to encourage our members to stay fit, active and healthy through engaging in different sports activities among all Ugandan Muslims residing in the United Kingdom. It attracted over 1000 members engaging in different sports. Due to limitation in numbers the Manchester twale only managed to participate in football.

UMC UK elections:

These were conducted on 28[th] May 2022 at Longsight library. This UMC Manchester Twale has strong links and share the same heritage with the Uganda Muslim Community hence our members are always involved in the activities relating to this organisation. On this occasion members were encouraged to participate in this electro process to decide who runs and managers the affairs of their wider Muslim community across the United Kingdom.

Eid Adhuha Celebrations (Community get together party):

This was facilitated by the forever Manchester grant and was aimed at getting members together to celebrate as one community including members from Newcastle, Liverpool and greater Manchester, something which the pandemic had made difficult to achieve between 2020 and 2021. This was held on 9/06/2022 from 10.00am to 5pm at the Pakistan Community centre in long sight. Then members had outdoor activities in long sight park to enjoy the good weather playing different activities till late.

Quran Competition:

This was held on the 1/01/2023 for all Ugandan decent members based in UK. It was supposed to be help at the Uganda Mosque UK unfortunately it was decided on the last minute be held on zoom due to the viral infections surging in with the community members to prevent cross infections and protect community vulnerable members. From our Manchester Twale we only had one participant Aqeel and three other members who recited though not among the competition.

Health and Safety training:

The British Muslim Heritage together with the Uganda Muslim Community Manchester Twale organised this session to provide an introductory insight to Mental health. It provided key definitions in this subject area, how to identify people affected by mental health problems, how they can be helped to address these issues and how can we as a community address the key issues affecting those affected by mental health. At the end of the session all members who attended were awarded certificates of attendance and the charity received a 2000-pound donation for organising and coordinating the event.

Future Prospects:

Our ultimate aim is to continue keeping the community together and getting our normal activities running. We constantly update our members using the WhatsApp forums and through our website and below are some of the issues we intend to improve or carry forward.

Policies and Procedures:

As a charity we need to continue keeping policies in place in order to comply with standards and requirements as stipulated by the charity commission. Rising funds:

We urge all members to help their charity generously by setting up standing orders and donating to the organisation. Members and well-wishers do this willingly as we have no membership fee.

VENUE:

Getting our own physical address has always been our ultimate goal. Rather than using addresses of the trustees for correspondence purposes, we continue to ask all members to look out for suitable cheap premises which we can use for our community activities and events until a time when we can get our own.
